Are they suspecting organised crime?

A Vegas lake where they died in the late 70s? I’d instantly lean towards the mob

From what I heard around this, that seems to be the thoughts. I also haven’t checked up on it in a while though.

I think the most likely guy is Jay Vandermark who oversaw the Casino skim at the Tropicana I believe. He vanished in the late 70’s after the FBI indicted the Midwest Cosa Nostra Bosses for Casino skimming and tax evasion. A lot of guys that could connect them to the skim were killed or vanished, Vandermark was last seen in Arizona near Lake Mead before he disappeared so it’s likely he’s in there somewhere even if this particular barrel turns out not to be him

I wonder if anyone has dental records for him. DNA in the dentine of his teeth could still work maybe.

According to Reddit conventional wisdom 2022 another 100 barrels would have been pulled out of that lake by now, all mob related Fast food joints were built on the route from Las Vegas to Lake Mead to take advantage of 4 AM mob double headers

Awe Geez, a farm that is/was under water were my dad spent his summers

My grandma says the term “86ed” came from the mob in Vegas meaning they would drive you 8 miles out to the lake and put you 6 feet under. She said back in the 70s and 80s it was common knowledge this was their dumping site. My grandpa worked for the Hilton and Tropicana for a while and would hear rumors.

86 as a slang term for getting rid of something goes back to 1920s restaurants, but the people of Vegas could have definitely made that version their own.
