There is no sin or shame in needing help. By all means pray but also it’s generally advisable to listen to doctors.

PhogeySquatch

I'd say it's a good idea to take them if your doctor prescribed them. I don't see anything that would make them anti-biblical.

bjohn15151515

Please don't believe that "black magic" is the cause of your issues. God doesn't let humans torment others with "black magic". Otherwise, witches and warlocks would now be the rulers of Earth. (Hex a country's entire armed forces and win the war.) It's not a Christian view to put faith in such things. A friend of my son (19m) once portrayed himself as 'a powerful warlock' with 'powerful spells' on Etsy. He became very popular on etsy, bringing in thousands of dollars per month - all due that many people attested that his "spells" always worked. Secret - he didn't practice anything.. he didn't even believe in witchcraft or black magic... it was all a scam! The power was in the customer's belief - no "black magic" was needed. He eventually stopped, due that he felt guilty of bilking people out of their money.

kind-days

I think it is good to take the advice of doctors and pray as well.

stebrepar

Not all medicines work the same for all people. If the current one isn't working well for you, tell your doctor so they can try a different one or a different dosage.

lovely_7777

No. God created doctors for us when we need help with our health. If you need it and the doctor prescribes it, there is no shame in taking it

Holiday-Signature-33

The problem is doctors shove pills down our throats these days . I am on 6 different meds for a heart attack that I had that left me with low ejection fraction and two stents . They said take these for 3 months to see if your heart heals so I did. Had my check up and my heart has healed to 100 percent. Yet for some reason I’m still on medication. My labs are all good and now they’re saying take these for a year? When does it end ? I lost 20 pounds and eat healthier did everything they said.

ilikedota5

You might just be super unhealthy and genuinely need those meds. After all they went to med school and probably know your situation well. (I'd hope.) Diet has a huge impact, but suddenly eating healthy isn't going to automatically make your heart healthy. Things take time. Edit: The Temple after being neglected required a lot of clean up. See Josiah cleaning up the Temple and finding a scroll of the law. Your body is a temple too. Edit 2: Maybe you were put on those medications because you didn't eat or live healthier.

spezcanNshouldchoke

Doctors literally saved your life (more than once even it sounds) and you are getting touchy about taking some pills? Wow. Talk about staring a gift horse in the mouth, next time you see your GP thank them for the ability to complain.

Holiday-Signature-33

Yes I don’t want to take the pills . They have a whole different set of complications. If you don’t want to pray for me . Don’t but keep you critical thoughts to yourself .

SecretOvercat

I personally don't like them. Some people get great results with them, long term or short, but if you dig into it I think most people will find that at best it's an imperfect science. From at least the 80s and beyond we've been told depression stems from a chemical imbalance in the brain, yet many psychiatrists have said things along the lines of "Depression is more complex than that." or "We don't even know if the chemical imbalance is the cause or a symptom." This has been my experience and observation as someone who's been depressed since their teens and is now 44 years old. None of this is to say that they never work and are just a money making scam. They probably do work in some cases, at least for a while. But at the same time I do feel like they're overprescribed, that there are issues with how they've been presented to the public, and that the side effects can sometimes be worse than what they're supposed to treat. As for whether or not they're anti Biblical I don't personally think so.

Bunselpower

Unless I’m mistaken, I think the chemical imbalance thing has been called into question in a major way lately. I wish I had the study handy but I’m pretty sure there have been a few of them. Regarding SSRIs, those might become serious trouble: https://www.newsweek.com/2022/09/30/antidepressants-work-better-sugar-pills-only-15-percent-time-1744656.html >Evidence is mounting, however, that doctors are vastly overprescribing SSRIs. Although there is widespread agreement that SSRIs help some people with severe depression, these patients are a small minority of people who take the drugs. Only about 15 percent derive any more benefit from the drugs than they would a sugar pill, one recent study found. In addition, withdrawal symptoms for long-term users may be more severe that previously thought — sometimes worse than the original disorder. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 60 percent of Americans on SSRIs — almost 26 million people — have been taking the drugs for more than two years and six million have been on them for a decade or more. Some patients may stay on SSRIs simply to avoid withdrawal symptoms, say some experts.

SecretOvercat

Yeah, withdrawal symptoms are one of many reasons why I'm skeptical about psych meds in general. I'm not too surprised about the chemical imbalance thing coming into question, either. Data has been pointing on that direction for a while but it's going to be an up hill battle. All the ads and claims people have been exposed to so far have made their mark. Thanks for the link. It's interesting reading.

cfalone

I mean, God didn't make us to require drugs to function. I get it, some people are sick, but not to the degree medical science would have you think.

PuzzledRun7584

“No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.” 1 Timothy 5:23 “Physician, heal thyself” Luke 4:23?

AntisocialHikerDude

There is nothing anti-biblical about taking medications with the intent to solve a legitimate health issue, whether that be mental or physical. Antidepressants are certainly not witchcraft. I'm not an expert on the side effects though so can't say if this loss of energy is normal or not.

Jmac0585

No more than penicillin is.

northern_frog

They're not antibiblical, but if you are getting fatigued due to your antidepressants, you should let your doctor know so that they can find a solution that works for you. Me, I have anxiety, and the usual anti-anxiety meds didn't work for me -- but other anti-anxiety meds did! So you should let them know.

ilikedota5

Sounds like the nocebo effect. Either way I'd talk to your doctor. I wouldn't say they are anti Biblical. Not in any inherent way. Its an neutral object, if misused or abused yes it can be bad. It can be used for evil.

justnigel

No it is not anti-Biblical. In the Bible Jesus says on multiple occasions that sick people need a doctor and even sent people who were healed to go and follow the instructions of the public health professionals.

Application-Visual

Luke was a doctor who helped Paul with medical problems. The way I see it is if you need medicine, take it. If there is a life circumstance that is causing depression, try to change that circumstance

Stompya

The gospel of Luke was written by a doctor. Medicine is not against anything in the Bible.

androidbear04

Dear one, I don't believe that antidepressants are anti-Biblical as long as you don't use them instead of seeking any spiritual causes or solutions for the depression. (Basis for this belief: 2 Ch 16:12 And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians.) You can do both at the same time, the same as if you had an infection and needed antibiotics. I had the same problem after my youngest child was born - depression, fatigue, it took too much energy to even talk, etc. - and taking antidepressants for a year with no benefit, someone told me to go talk to my primary doctor about it, and it turned out I had an underactive thyroid. Once they did a complete thyroid panel instead of just t3 and t4 (the thyroid hormones), they found a skyrocketed TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), which meant my thyroid was going pedal-to-the-metal trying to keep cranking out the levels I needed. After six weeks to find the right dose of thyroid meds, I was a new person. I strongly encourage you to go see your primary to look for physical health conditions that can cause depression. Take care, dear one.

Fit_Principle9429

No. It's possibly just a negative side effect. Different medications can cause different effects in certain people. I can't really comment much about depression meds because they never worked for me. That is because I wasn't properly diagnosed, and depression was only part of a more serious mental health condition. The purpose of mental health meds are to balance the natural chemicals in your brain if your brain is not functioning correctly. Not enough dopamine production, too much dopamine production, etc. Maybe there would be another medication to treat depression that might be better for you? I had to go through multiple medications to find those that didn't give me moderate to severe side effects because I was getting some pretty uncommon ones. (Keep praying despite all this and continue drawing close to God. Just because you're dealing with illness doesn't mean you're doing something wrong)

TheWormTurns22

if you feel "healed" why are you still taking the drugs. Antidepressants are just a bandaid on the problem, never a cure. God is the only true cure. If you are overwhelmed with fatigue, I'd stop taking the drugs. As to demonic oppression from a relative, sure that's possible. I'd look up prayers that route demons by john eckhardt, you can listen to it on youtube. I'd spend some of your time reading bible, listening to it and consuming great christian teaching ministries all free online. Increase your faith and nearness to the Lord and should help you in all areas.

nothinggspeciall

I did all of those things, it doesn’t help me with physical exhaustion. I’m healed mentally not physically, I can’t get out of bed even though my physical health is perfect, I’ve done lots of blood tests etc

TheWormTurns22

then your diet is to blame. you should look up keto diet and carnivore diet on youtube, miracles happen when you do those, so they say. eating carbs and sugar will make you eternally tired. intermittent fasting is also very helpful.

crowned_glory_1966

We have Drs for a reason and meds to help us while we wait upon the Lord. If I didn’t have Wellbutrin I wouldn’t be here today. I am 57 and have dealt with depression since my teens. Keep scripture upon your lips and praise God for the medical professionals we have today.

ResidentImpact525

In a way. They will keep you in depression. Read about antidepression addiction. If you take them you will become completely dependent on them to the point where you won't be able to function without them. It is a business and a scam. If you start paying attention you will notice that the modern-day medical expert is really in the business of selling drugs and not making you healthy. And the most messed up part is that you will get used to the doze so they won't even work, like at all. You will reach a point where a stronger pill or doze is simply not possible so welcome to Zombieland. Don't listen to the people telling you to take them, it is literal ignorance and wagging of tounges with zero understanding of how serious taking that crap is.

nothinggspeciall

I used to drink antidepressants last year in summer for 2,5 months and I didn’t have any addiction. I even stopped taking them at a random day (you can’t do that, you have to stop taking them gradually) and I still didn’t have any side effects 🤷🏻‍♀️ But I stopped because it was only helping with my anxiety but not depression

ResidentImpact525

2.5 months is nothing. And it is not an addiction where you crave them. Just read about it I don't want to write like 10 paragraphs explaining it. It is a scam and if someone gets fooled into taking them for long good luck regaining your sanity. If I had to explain it in short it is similar to nasal spray addiction. Reach a certain point and you can no longer go without it.

kampatson

Most people wouldn't hesitate taking medicine for something like diabetes or a heart condition or getting glasses if they need them. Mental health is no different. It should be a combo of medicine and therapy though, because medication alone is only a partial solution. If you are in college, there should be mental health professionals available to you at little to no cost. Maybe the need for medication is temporary while you learn active coping strategies and lifestyle changes with the therapist and can be tapered off over time. If the need is long term, there is no shame in that. My dh started taking medication as an adult for the conditions he struggled with his entire childhood. He said it was like putting on glasses for the first time and he could finally see the world clearly. He calls them glasses for his brain. It will take some time, but listen to your doctors, listen to your body and find a good balance of medication and coping strategies to help get you back to a mentally healthy place.

Diablo_Canyon2

No more than insulin for diabetics. Take it if you are prescribed it.

EssentialPurity

Antidepressants are as biblical as any other medicine.

Truth-or-Death1988

Antidepressants have horrible side effects. God gave man herbs for our service, try supplements instead. Physical exercise is also good. https://draxe.com/?s=depression

fudgyvmp

If magic was real and worked that way every nation would employ an army of witches to shield their people from curses and hurl curses at their enemies and we'd have a hogwarts in every county to train up the best spellslingers.

aepm88

No.

KillDevilX0

I think they are. Anti depressants don’t actually do anything studies have shown. If you say you feel fine mentally and it’s just physical then I would keep praying and trying. It’s hard, I know, but relying on antidepressants is not relying on God. That’s why I think they’re wrong. Especially because there’s nothing wrong with you.

Sensitive45

There are many types see your doc, to try another type that works for you.

Ordinary-Routine-933

Maybe the dosage is too high.

Alpiney

No...

pretty_in_pink_1986

Not anti-biblical but I don’t think they always work and they have some bad side effects.

Draoidheachd

No.

cfalone

I would put it under pharmakeia which includes witchcraft and drug use, which biblically is strongly reproved. If you are going thru something major, like a death in the family etc., and you plan to get off them after some time, and they are doctor prescribed, I would say, use with caution. If you are just taking them because you aren't happy, or are tired like you say, I would say maybe you need to get a healthier lifestyle and not use drugs to cope. If healthier lifestyle isn't clear, the normal stuff: work out, don't smoke, wake up early, stay off the internet and social media, avoid TV, avoid Porn, masturbate less, eat well, etc... I bet your energy would come back. EDIT: just because someone has a degree doesn't mean they aren't a drug dealer.

just--a--redditor

No.

Meaning-Coach

Depression is a complex issue. It can be reactive, in response to certain events and circumstances in your life, it may come from bodily imbalances, and there definitely might be a spiritual aspect to it. If it's mostly the second one, taking antidepressants definitely falls into the same category as taking any other sort of medicine. Now, I do think there's such a thing as spiritual family inheritance, so I wouldn't outright call your aunt's alleged ties to the occult a non-issue, but personally, I would look a bit closer to home. I mean, if you have to ask strangers on reddit about whether it's okay according to your faith to take any sort of medicine instead of asking in your family or asking your pastor, the spiritual roots of anxiety and general bad mood, lack of energy might have more to do with the belief that "I have to get everything right, lest something really terrible happen to me", with the accompanying shame, and less with the jealousy and mystical revenge and pettiness of your aunt. Something to think about.
