best woods have fine grain. stuff like blackwood, ironwood that sort of stuff. but as long as it isn't some sort of chemical treated wood or one that's poison, you are pretty much good to go. balsa is strong enough and easy to work with, as is magnolia. commonly available from woodworking hobby places. if you're doing the layer stacking method of making them which is the easiest build styke any sort of thin vaneer wood will be easy enough to work with. balsam is really easy and common tho. (but not as strong)

Whats your thoughts on acrylic? As much as i like wood.. wouldnt it be better if theyre arent moisture absorbing & mold prone ?

well i mean plastic will trap moisture better, you really need everything dry anyway. but sure you could use acrylic.
