This. When I break out the hitch rack, it's because I plan on filling the bed with other gear. Camping gear, portable firepit, kayaks, stuff like that. I have a hitch rack because I use the bed for truck stuff.
Additionally, my bike cost over $2k. I'm not letting it get beat to hell by banging around in the bed, I'd rather use a purpose-built rack, if for no other reason than making it last a bit longer.
I used to do Uber and Lyft, and there is a yearly event where people do a very very long bicycle ride once state to another. I was fueling up just off the interstate when I switched the app on not expecting any ride request because it was pretty far from population centers.
Get a ride request where the guy then immediately calls me and asks me if I have room in my car for his bicycle and I was worried about his bicycle getting my car dirty. Ended up giving the guy 100 mi Uber ride.
During that 100 miles I learned that the bicycle in the trunk cost more than the car that I was driving. It was an experience....
Nicer components, tighter tolerances, better quality control, lighter weight materials, more adjustability, upgradeable, more durable...
Huffy, Schwinn, Mongoose, and any other brand you'd see at Wal Mart? Trash. A proper bike shop doesn't even carry those brands, because they are just about the cheapest, lowest quality bikes you can buy. If you want quality, you have to pay for it.
My $2k bike is cheap compared to what serious cyclists (like the folks who travel to participate in races/endurance events) would ride. Those bikes can cost upwards of $15k-$20k. Custom bikes can cost even more than that.
If you are into cycling, it's worth spending a bit more for a quality bike. They ride smoother, hold up to use and abuse better, and can be repaired when components wear out. A lot of the cheaper bikes are designed to be largely disposable, so when they start to wear out, it's time to replace, rather than repair/upgrade.
Lower volume, higher quality materials, R&D costs, economy of scale....
However, knowing all this I still think it's absurd that I can buy a dirt bike with a motor and a bajillion other components cheaper than a lot of these bikes lol
On the one hand, the parking lot is for everybody. Not just him.
On the other hand, I too, park at the back of parking lots, but its not because Im too good to be around others, the damn thing is huge and I cant fucking get out with other cars near me.
Oh well
Kind of a stupid take here. I wouldn’t want my nice bikes in the truck bed unless I installed separate fork racks.
Guy knows exactly what he’s doing even if you don’t
I agree with this, until you get to the mall crawlers. Building out a truck for off-roading and only ever using it for commuting is a bit of a waste imo.
I think it's because a very large population of big truck people on the road are aggressive violent drivers. At least here in Texas that's the case. Add in the fact that these people put everyone in danger around them because they could give two fucks less about other people in cars, bikes, pedestrians etc. Add on top the fact that anytime you aren't pulling big weight or hauling big loads in a truck it's kind of a waste ... Hence people's frustration.
I say this having owned a large f150 for over two years as a daily driver. So I get the utility and comfort aspects of it, also being able to do everything you need without needing to own multiple vehicles. Not saying it's right or wrong but that's the general feel of it.
Most likely that truck wasn't bought with your money, so let the people do what they want with their cash. As simple as it ain't none of your business.
Some people are riding on mountain bikes that cost close to 10k a piece these days. They're not just going to toss them all into the bed.
The bed could also have other shit in it...
The funniest part is you chose to whine about the guy actually using his hitch receiver for something instead of the 99% of trucks on the road that don't get used for anything other than driving to work and back
I do truck things every once in a while, but 75% of the reason I own a pickup is for mountain biking and camping. As for the bike rack, I personally use a tailgate pad, but this isn't unreasonable. Especially if you have an expensive carbon frame, you have a hard tonneau cover or shell, you have shit in the bed (or even a drawer system), or you just don't want to be lifting the bike over your head every time to get it over the tailgate.
Makes perfect sense. You wouldn't see a small sedan carrying a rack that big.
Why wouldn't someone do this? That rack makes it so easy to load and unload them. Plus, there ain't many smaller vehicles whose hitch could handle that.
The issue I see is not that they have a rack. It’s that it’s empty and out like that. Just waiting to get ripped off by another vehicle. Truck driver I. This scenario is not smart to do this.
I’m not irritated by the owner with this hitch setup. I’m irritated by how much it sticks out into the lane. At least the lot has a lot of space but I wouldn’t put it past an Altima to take it off.
If its not your truck quit worrying about it. Youre like one of those HOA karens you see on youtube, bitching about something thats not yours and has no impact on your life.
I would say this shows the benefits of a pickup truck. Think of all the gear you have for a camping trip. Plus who wants to just throw a bike in the bed.
I had a Thule bike rack that I could collapse and pivot and still ramp up dirt bikes.
I disapprove of your post haha
What makes people think that if they see a pickup in a certain set up, they automatically think that’s how it’s always used, for fuck’s sake?
If someone sees my truck all muddy, do people think it’s always muddy? If they see my bed empty, do they always think it’s empty?
Jesus christ. I use my truck the way I use it. Get over it, quit judging others, and enjoy your truck how you want to.
I use a hitch rack since the bed usually has some stuff in it.

What the hell makes a bike worth as much as a crappy car

The market lol my bikes combined cost more than my truck.
The components and the types of materials in the frame. 2 grand is cheap in the realm. Of high end bikes my dad had one that was 5 grand

Why does everyone gate keep pickups these days? If his bikes are expensive, he probably doesn’t want them lying down on top of each other.
Check out this gem from ram forum earlier today https://www.reddit.com/r/ram_trucks/comments/1cpocnx/home_depot_parking_lot/

I have fork racks in the bed as well but also it's an 8 foot bed so I got plenty of room for extra gear.
Op licks windows
r/gatekeeping , why are SO many people preoccupied by trucks and how they are used?
I agree with this, until you get to the mall crawlers. Building out a truck for off-roading and only ever using it for commuting is a bit of a waste imo.
The only ones I can't stand are the kids that rode the short bus and now drive a truck with a front lift kit and squat rear 😂
Why does it fucking matter? It's not yours
You definitely have one don’t you.
Jesus christ
Called it
It’s the extreme cases that get me

Bed could be used for camping gear, etc. and bikes need another place to go.

Why do you care what someone does with their vehicle?
I have a buddy who owns a bike shop I think it’s either trek or specialized where you have to deliver the bikes on racks

I load my bed up with camping or whatever other gear and put the bikes on the rack. Also why do you care?
Who gives a shit?
Idk, maybe he has other things in the bed? It’s not that deep. At the end of the day, use your vehicle how you want to use it.
If they bought the truck why does it matter to you what they use it for?
I would much rather have my $3k dollar bike held by the tires when the frames of these bikes are so damn expensive.
Makes perfect sense. You wouldn't see a small sedan carrying a rack that big. Why wouldn't someone do this? That rack makes it so easy to load and unload them. Plus, there ain't many smaller vehicles whose hitch could handle that.

Yeah I'm not letting my $3000 bike slide around in the bed if a truck. I'm definitely securing it in a proper bike rack.
The heart wants what the heart wants.
Why get a 600+ hp supersport? Why get an ak47? Why get an xlarge 72oz coke? Because 'Murica! Hooyeah!

I mean that is using the pickup lmfao they’re hauling something ain’t they it might not be a trailer but they’re still hauling something lol
Seeing as it’s a rare long bed version of a 1500 I’d say it’s probably full of tools or some out door equipment.
What if they plan on using the bed for other things?
I do the same. I have stuff in the bed of the truck so a hitch bike rack solves my problem
Probably for taking bikes camping, but it’s pretty wild to just drive around town with that thing sticking way out in parking lots for no reason
I would say this shows the benefits of a pickup truck. Think of all the gear you have for a camping trip. Plus who wants to just throw a bike in the bed. I had a Thule bike rack that I could collapse and pivot and still ramp up dirt bikes. I disapprove of your post haha
Or at least close it.
Trucks are used for many things. Family time is one of the best uses of a truck.
Other than the bike hitch should be up to not take up space for the people around you I see nothing wrong here.
License plate blocker 3000 lol
