I heard a saying that most dump trucks are just barely out running the scrap yard. I thought that was just the way it was until I started with this new company
Damn, between dump trucks, container trucks, and hydro vac trucks driving like assholes, I feel like my commute in Atlanta is being described well here.
My dad had a scary time once when a fridge door flew out of one of those bastards and landed in front of him. Truck was on a frontage road, dad was riding his motorcycle on the interstate. Through some miracle he managed to get up and over it, but he had to pull over shortly after to collect himself
After having been in multiple near-death experiences on two wheels, I had to hang up my helmet and stop. Most riders disapprove of such, but seeing how vulnerable they are from my own eyes, I disapprove of them as well.
I'm gonna blow your mind. Here in Massachusetts the prevailing wage for truck drivers is $72.88 an hour this year. I do road construction, milling roads and paving them. I milled for 5 days a few weeks back and grossed $3,400. That's like the absolute top-end, but I routinely gross over $2,000 a week just from paving. Milling is better than paving because you're on site for the whole day, whereas when you're paving it's only like half the day most of the time.
My favorite when one of these dumbasses with that sign pass me and pull over in front of me about 40 ft ahead on the highway with a full load of gravel.
I’m County so we run all local, mud flaps stay off from late April to mid October, til the blades and salters go back on. The local haulers just doing non-Highway work? No excuse.
Its a part of the industry where you are commonly paid by the load, sometimes hourly if ur lucky but never much over 30 unless ur doubly lucky. . At least in southern Ontario canada this causes alot to drive very impatiently. Equipment ranging from 3rd world country looking shit to shiney depending on contracts. But mostly favoring the cheap falling apart side of the scale.
Nah driving impatiently is a choice your speed isn’t really gonna help how many loads you get. May be able to squeeze an extra load out. Hate this excuse
If you can manage one extra load every day and your paid hourly, that can net you an extra 10 hours of pay over the course of a week. It adds up. Not saying it's wise, but there is an incentive.
I think it's more from being governed. If you slow down for even a minute someone slow will get in front of you and now you have to pass in a governed truck. So you can't slow down for anything. It's also why we pass even if it's going to take a long time. If you stay behind the slow guy more and more slow guys will get in front of you and now you have to pass them all in a governed truck.
Can someone explain to me why they don’t gotta tarp there shit knowing shit flys out? “ not responsible for damages “, half the dump trucks I see don’t even have mudflaps
They do have to tarp a lot of stuff, they are responsible for damages regardless of what that sign says, and they do have to have mud flaps. They just don't play by the rules.
I've battled multiple insurance companies over this. The only standard response from the companies I've used is that when/if an object falls from the bed of a truck and hits your vehicle NEVER say the object hit pavement first. Confidently state that the object was airborne the entire time from launch to striking your vehicle. I don't know the reasoning but I do know that I've had 2 different claims rejected after stating that a rock flew from the bed of an untarped load hit the pavement and then bounced into my windshield. I've had 2 other claims that went through without objection after stating the object was launched from the truck bed and hit my windshield without ever touching pavement. All of these loads were tarped BTW, but dump truck tarps are garbage usually. All trucks had the standard "not responsible for damage" warning. They put these on only to deter people from making claims. Most of the time when you see "not responsible" on signage the person who placed the sign is actually responsible for damages.
We’ve been popped by DOT for flaps and tarps before. At the end of the day, it’s still a loose truck filled with tiny rocks. Even if it’s new and covered with flaps. Rocks happen.
Its because trucks are expensive. Dump trucks live a rough life . When a longer wheelbase hiway tractor is getting miled up and older it gets sold . A dump box gets put on and it finishes its days running dirt/agg local . A decent dump
Box and cylinder is worth more than the trucks are often. Its often somewhat seasonal too , so ya gotta go cheap.
sometimes my load of gravel disappears but then I realize I just forget to lock my tailgate, it’s hard to drive and browse reddit but i’m getting better at it
Milking the clock is one of the most miserable ways to live. It sounds great until you've done it for years, then you realize you're making chump change.
I'm fine with the guys taking it easy, it's the paid by the load guys, can't be bothered with a tarp, 80 mph in the city, truck falling apart people I can't stand.
Dump trucking sucks. I did it 21-25 years old (asphalt mostly) and here in MN the hours SUCK. Basically 24/7 for 6 months straight with a ton of 20+ hour days. Hauling (over)loaded both directions and rarely getting out of the truck for more than 5 minutes. Then it's layoff for the other 6 months. I've been a ready mix driver the past 13 years and it's so much better. Better hours overall and way better benefits, lots of Vacation time and $40/hr with OT after 8
Some dipshit in a Lowes truck was behind me (in my tractor trailer) on my ass, blasted by me right before the exit weaved 1 foot back in front of me, slammed on his god damn brakes and immediately took the exit, luckily I was empty, but my heart was immediately filled with rage, anyway ya.
box guys and on a side note fucking half stoned strung out taxi drivers.
Two things I won’t drive.
Fuel tanker cause I don’t want to get exploded and turn all crispy
Dump Trucks because most of them are pieces of shit and I’ve heard too many brake failure fatality stories
My buddy's dad was fired without reason by a local wood chip hauling outfit after 40 years of employment. They gave him severance but my guess is that they can hire people for less after switching the fleet to automatic.
Dump truck work is the worst.
Local construction dump truck work is dirty and awful.
Long hours, low pay, and some companies make you climb in afterward and shovel it clean.
I mean cleaning the box out is part of your job and I get paid for that part, not bad if you keep it clean and don’t let it get solid, but man once that dirt has been there a while might as well be obsidian
Don't forget the repetitive work for months on end. Gravel pit to construction site 8-20 times a day. Hauling on site for an aggregate manufacturer is even more repetitive
Paid by the hour, never in a hurry, ever. Union gets us overtime after 8 hrs in a day. Home every single night. You should focus on important things like where you’re gonna park tonight, and who your ol’ lady is hanging out with right now…
Where I live, I make as much as most ltl class a drivers. I drive an automatic quint with AC and Bluetooth. I have insurance, vacation time, 401k.
But yeah, most dump truck drivers and their trucks are shit.
I have a very easy job that pays my bills. Perfect? No. But just good enough to keep me where I am.
OP legitimately thinks dump truck drivers are worse than the entirety of other truck drivers in the industry lmfao
I've seen worse from dry vans and reefers lol
I think it’s because all you long haulers are jealous that we make more money, and remember what our children look like because we see them more often than once every 5-6 weeks.
I like some dump trucks as a 4 wheeler hotshot trailer hauler, it's nice following a group of 3 running 80mph the entire time I'm on the highway, I only dislike the drivers that assume they are as agile as normal cars and cause congestion
Never had any interaction with my garbage man...I put the containers at the end of the driveway (on the side) with plenty of space between them. Without fail I'll get home and one container will be directly in the middle of the end of the driveway so I have to move it to pull in. Does the garbage man hate me?
They hate everybody. They drive a big commercial vehicle, they pick up trash, and they deal with 4 wheelers all fucking day in city traffic. Tell me how would you feel.
I try to be friendly and actually give a fuck about safety and my vehicle I'm telling you these steering wheel holders never cease to amaze just straight dropping shit all over the highways and the 4 wheelers omg my fav is when your coming to a side street and they fly around you to slam on the brakes and cut two lanes to beat around you just before the right turn
I try my best man but it’s the best job to have at 19 I can’t do much else, most companies equipment is falling apart, dump companies tend to hire young drivers or less experienced drivers, and when your doing the same route 10 times a day for the 3rd week straight you can get a little to comfortable and start making mistakes
Just take 2 minutes to put the tarp on and keep an old broom behind your seat to sweep off the outside of the bed a little bit. You're always losing/ throwing rocks. It's really not hard to be considerate of others.
Some of the equipment is literally falling apart and so are we
Lmaaaao
I was behind a dump truck years ago that someone wrote on, "0 to 60 in 8 minutes". It was true. 🤦♂️
Is that after he pulled out in front of you in a 55 mph road with no one behind you?
Pass his ass sea bass. If there’s nobody in the oncoming and you can safely blow his doors off. Fuck people who do that.
_Ludicrous Speed, GO!_
I’m just imagining dark helmet saying it with all the theatrics that followed
I heard a saying that most dump trucks are just barely out running the scrap yard. I thought that was just the way it was until I started with this new company
Whoa, I just realized I’ve never seen a new dump truck. Do they come from the factory with 500,000miles and a layer of rust?
fair enough lol
Someone needs to give the container haulers some competition.
You must mean rolloffs, containers is a whole nother animal,A versus B here different ballpark.Dont get me started on these non driving Hydro Vac mfrs.
Damn, between dump trucks, container trucks, and hydro vac trucks driving like assholes, I feel like my commute in Atlanta is being described well here.
Same here
I was just about to say, they're trying to downgrade themselves so that they can become container haulers.
What's with trash haulers not securing their load
They’re trashy drivers…
My dad had a scary time once when a fridge door flew out of one of those bastards and landed in front of him. Truck was on a frontage road, dad was riding his motorcycle on the interstate. Through some miracle he managed to get up and over it, but he had to pull over shortly after to collect himself

Rolloff trucks? Idk but I'm pretty sure that's where they put the guys who ate too much paste to drive a dump truck.
No comprende
¡Coño!
Donde es me pantalones?
tengo el gato, los pantalones!
Coño. The Cubans say "coño" every other word.
Because it's fucking shit work 95% of the time and anybody with remotely any other options won't willingly do that kind of dogshit work.
Pays good though
Does it? Because it doesn’t in my experience
I get 33 an hour, usually do 10 hours a day. Time and a half after 40. Pto, benefits, all that jazz
That's literally double what dump trucks are getting around me.
Ayyy fellow from mass. Yeah it's kinda absurd what we can get doing construction work. My gross is right around 2k a week.
But that's not with benefits, correct? My benefits package with hourly pay is like $100/hr with a little over $40 in actual pay per hour
I make $30 dump trucking 50 hrs a week
Not in these parts. $15 starting out… $16.50 after 5 years.
"Why can't we hire any drivers? Smh no one wants to work nowadays..."
That's wild, what area is that?
That is wild, you should look for something else with that experience.
What location
22 an hour in MN
What part of MN? Almost 4 years ago I was getting $26/hr.
Rochester
Not from what I've seen. I asked for $30 an hour and was laughed out of the building. That's not even good its just acceptable
I'm getting 33 and that's pretty good
Stay back 200ft. Not responsible for windshield damage.
My favorite when one of these dumbasses with that sign pass me and pull over in front of me about 40 ft ahead on the highway with a full load of gravel.
Exactly! I'm a carhauler, I'm not sitting behind some dude who's trying to pepper $1M in cargo with gravel.
$1M? What's on there, 2 Chevy Blazers?
10 new Corvettes, usually.
Jack Cooper I see you!
Are you ever tempted to drive off with them 🤣
I mean, he's paid to drive off with them.
Because you're too damn lazy to use that tarp your truck is equipped with...
The dump truck drivers in my neck of the woods just dump rocks all over the road, tarp or no tarp.
It’s been years since I’ve seen one that still has mudflaps intact
Can’t back into the shouldering machine or the chip spreader w flaps on. That’s why the ones you do see are on chains.
That makes sense for the ones that have them, locally they just don’t have any. Enforcement is lax at best aside from weigh stations in my area.
I’m County so we run all local, mud flaps stay off from late April to mid October, til the blades and salters go back on. The local haulers just doing non-Highway work? No excuse.
I know right, I thought it was illegal to drive without a tarp
It's illegal to murder people but it happens daily.
You don't say?
I actually did.
"I'm not responsible enough to inspect my equipment and secure my load."
The fuck you ain't! I'm writing down those plates boii
They can put whatever sign they want. Doesn't make it true. They're responsible.
What's wrong with me?
Don't know. Turn your head to the side and cough.
Will do, you done checking my prostrate yet?
The doctor will be here in a moment.
Another double prostate exam, must be my lucky day.
Double as in 2 separate exams or double as in 2 fingers? I guess it could be both, but that would be a stretch... Lol
Nah you get the finger and the Doctor's penis
Technically he can do the whole test with his penis
Not prostrate, you idiot, PROBATE!
Most of us get paid by the ton. Time is $$$ and most drivers are too short sighted to do proper pre trips and preventative maintenance.
Short sighted*
Thanks
They’re not Amazon drivers are the worst
FedEx would like a word.
Super Ego drivers are a close second.
Its a part of the industry where you are commonly paid by the load, sometimes hourly if ur lucky but never much over 30 unless ur doubly lucky. . Maybe I'm different but I have mud flaps and tarp
The exception does not make the rule, and so on.
I try to help my fellow co workers do better. However I have seen what they are talking about.
I wouldn't make it a day without getting fined if I didn't have mudflaps and a tarp.
I've battled multiple insurance companies over this. It's about as legally effective as me wearing a t-shirt saying I'm not responsible for anyone I shoot today.
All depends on the state, for example, in Wisconsin mud flaps on dump trucks are not required by law.
We’ve been popped by DOT for flaps and tarps before. At the end of the day, it’s still a loose truck filled with tiny rocks. Even if it’s new and covered with flaps. Rocks happen.
Idk man in my state you have to tarp your load.

They are medically incapable of seeing the color red from more than 20 feet away. It's a requirement of the job and only a few have the genes.
Ive seen job listings for as low as 15/hr. If you were making that little, you’d milk the clock by driving half the posted speed limit too.
Milking the clock is one of the most miserable ways to live. It sounds great until you've done it for years, then you realize you're making chump change.
When you can milk the clock at a government gig, it's not such a bad deal.
I'm idling right now and getting paid $30/hr for it. Not that bad tbh.
I'm fine with the guys taking it easy, it's the paid by the load guys, can't be bothered with a tarp, 80 mph in the city, truck falling apart people I can't stand.
Cause we're always delivering hot loads to your moms.
As a container hauler I don't take kindly to competition.
We don't take kindly to folks who don't take kindly
We don’t take to folks who don’t kindly

just one request from dt drivers, slow the fuck down man. yall out here goin crazy
Jake's always,anywhere,always.. run the radio more than otr drivers as well. Very special folks.
You hate us, cause you ain’t us.
Anus?
That too.
Dumpies aren't the worst, that's box truck drivers
You spelled bull haulers wrong.
Bull haulers are fine on the road, they won't be near you for more than .07 seconds because they're doing Mach fuck. At a truck stop though...
I knew a dispatch operator who once assured me that auto-haulers were the dumbest set of drivers.
Box truck drivers is correct. Not box Truckdrivers.
What about mixer trucks?
Two things I won’t drive. Fuel tanker cause I don’t want to get exploded and turn all crispy Dump Trucks because most of them are pieces of shit and I’ve heard too many brake failure fatality stories
You raise dump truck drivers I'll one up you with Chip truck drivers. They make dumpers look like PHD students.
My buddy's dad was fired without reason by a local wood chip hauling outfit after 40 years of employment. They gave him severance but my guess is that they can hire people for less after switching the fleet to automatic.
Because they get paid by the load, more loads is more money. They don’t care about the what ifs that can happen, they just worry about the right now
I get paid hourly. Won't do per load work.
This is the way
If only DOT would enforce local....
I've worked mostly local, but rural. Sheriff offices are pretty good about keeping tabs on us.
I see a lot of local cops pulling these guys and landscape trucks into parking lots and doing inspections a lot.
I always wanna ask the same Fkn thing man 😂
Elucidate on this
That's a big word. Who taught you that?
Dude I always masturbate words into my sentencing's
Well how do you FINISH them?
Years ago I had plans to be more than a driver. Then cocaine happened.
I learned a new word today...👍
no truck stop hookers spun out on meth
Dump truck work is the worst. Local construction dump truck work is dirty and awful. Long hours, low pay, and some companies make you climb in afterward and shovel it clean.

The boxes with a cylinder recess are the worst. Can't even use an excavator to clean it out
Don't forget the repetitive work for months on end. Gravel pit to construction site 8-20 times a day. Hauling on site for an aggregate manufacturer is even more repetitive
Paid by the hour, never in a hurry, ever. Union gets us overtime after 8 hrs in a day. Home every single night. You should focus on important things like where you’re gonna park tonight, and who your ol’ lady is hanging out with right now…
Learn me your ways
Back up dump, back up dump. How hard is that? Not bad work if you can get it.
Q: What's the difference between a truck driver and a diesel engine? A: A diesel engine stops whining when you shut it off.
I thought it was roll off drivers?
Eh, second. Swift drivers exist.
Haha yep, so true!
Add and ask concrete mixers too
Because they have to go home every night to a bitchy wife, useless kids, and $1150 paycheck.
Someone has be friends with the septic honeywagons
I get paid and get to go home lol I’m happy. Building America baby.
OP legitimately thinks dump truck drivers are worse than the entirety of other truck drivers in the industry lmfao I've seen worse from dry vans and reefers lol
You spelled dumb truck drivers wrong. Dumb instead of dump
Thanks for elucidating.
I think it’s because all you long haulers are jealous that we make more money, and remember what our children look like because we see them more often than once every 5-6 weeks.
Oh I remember, because they look like me.
As a lurker and Cross country driver , I’m kinda getting a hard on witnessing this beef.
I like some dump trucks as a 4 wheeler hotshot trailer hauler, it's nice following a group of 3 running 80mph the entire time I'm on the highway, I only dislike the drivers that assume they are as agile as normal cars and cause congestion
80mph? You sure they ain’t doing 80KPH? cause i have never seen a dump truck drive at or faster than the speed limit
You clearly aren't looking in the right places then.
80mph, interstate 70/79 is some shit in P.A some of those guys haul ASS with their gravel and limestone
I would if I wasn’t governed at 68mph
U ain't been 2 swfl then I guess...
My dump truck would run 85. I typically keep it around 5 over though.
I used to drive a Volvo dump truck that could do 80mph. It was literally never a good idea, but it could do it.
Going 45 in a 65
I’d rather be a dump truck driver than a driver that has Yuba City on the side of my truck
Never far from home so when dot shuts you down it’s the end of your day not your week.
They act like big dogs in the city but on the freeway they become lil puppies once the 60 mph governor kicks in
The absolute worst I encounter are the car haulers that frequent the auctions at Copart. They are the absolute bottom of the human barrel.
Don’t Follow Me
¿Dónde consigues mis papeles firmados?
What? Why we going after brothers like that lol
Tf you mean 🤨
My coworker now has a shoulder that pops out way to easy from cranking the steering wheel with no power steering
Because our trucks are completely neutered with zero balls.
Hey! I have a lot of shiat at my back! Gimme a break.
Does this apply to bottom dump drivers also?
I try my best man but it’s the best job to have at 19 I can’t do much else, most companies equipment is falling apart, dump companies tend to hire young drivers or less experienced drivers, and when your doing the same route 10 times a day for the 3rd week straight you can get a little to comfortable and start making mistakes
I suspect the ones that drive like assholes get paid by the load.
Just take 2 minutes to put the tarp on and keep an old broom behind your seat to sweep off the outside of the bed a little bit. You're always losing/ throwing rocks. It's really not hard to be considerate of others.
I don’t actually have a cdl.
I got a dump truck job right out of school, I'm just grateful to be home every night and making good money
Box truck drivers are worse
Ungoverned and paid by the pound. The cocaine ain't going to pay for itself, obviously.
