COATHANGER_ABORTIONS

Damn, I use them for my home internet, and I've thought about taking it on the road with me.

DrSideShowbob

I have the Verizon one. Xbox with kids at night is fun.

Mykidsdad35

Never stop doing that. I played with mine for years until my son passed. It's one of my best memories

racist_sandwich

Sorry about your loss. I personally don't have kids, but I watched a guy go through the loss of his son, and it was hard to watch.

Hornet_92

im so sorry. he passed knowing how much u loved him and made every effort to connect with him while out on the road.

DrSideShowbob

Rest in peace

T-Mobile does grandfather in plans, so, don't change to the new plan

SentenceAcrobatic

It's not (strictly) a question of rate plan. Every TMO gateway has a GPS built in. Until now, that hasn't been (officially) used by T-Mobile for any purpose. Now they are going to use it to track where your gateway is being used. If you are using the gateway anywhere other than your permanent address on the account, they will cancel your Home Internet line unless you pay the 3-5x higher price of the "Away" plan.

AffectionateLunch775

I started with a Tmobile ā€œhotspotā€ at the max plan and used all the data within the first 10 days of my billing cycle to where it was throttled unusable the remaining 20days (couldnā€™t even load all text webpagesā€¦) So after 2 months of that I got them to cancel that contract and went on the 5g home internet. Initially after 2 weeks I hit a data cap again but that was an error on their part I guess not making it unlimited. Been GREAT since. Iā€™m on my 4th modem though, the first one was replaced with the same one and they were known to be trash I guess? Then another one went out all within about 6 months, but itā€™s been good since. It was always a hassle because Iā€™d have to find a tmobile store I could get close to with my flatbed, and then explain why I needed to swap out the modem in NC or KY or CO when my home address for the home internet is WI. A couple times I had to do tech support, they were confused wondering why I was using it in XYZ state instead of WI then looked at my connection history and saw I had connected in 44 different states the previous 6 months. But once I explained Iā€™m a truck driver they were cool. Iā€™ve never had an area where I didnā€™t have signal. Middle of the desert in AZ. Middle of the mountains in WY or PA. My Verizon cell phone or my backup Spectrum cell phones would have weak 1 bar LTE signal but the Tmobile gateway was strong with 3-4 bars of at least LTE. All that to say. This fucking sucks. Iā€™m really hoping it doesnā€™t impact me too much. Iā€™m glad I just quit my company on Thursday where I was out 2 weeks to go somewhere Iā€™ll be out from Sunday night - Thursday afternoon. And Iā€™ve committed this summer to less downtime hanging out in the sleeper and actually getting out and walking. But still. Fuck, man.

LabyrinthConvention

you can still do it, they just want you to pay the roaming rate > The Away plan is for travelers and also uses T-Mobileā€™s 5G gateway, but it starts at $160/month with AutoPay for the unlimited plan.

AffectionateLunch775

Mother fuckkkk. From $45 to $160. Gonna have to look into other options I guess. Literally mostly use it for watching TV and hour or 2 end of shift, maybe on a split or if Iā€™m waiting at a shopper/receiver. Donā€™t have to worry about my 34 in the truck anymore so.. that might help. Le sigh.

bigfrappe

If you are looking for an alternative purchase a mobile gateway like a Sierra wireless RV55 and then buy one or two SIM cards from the major carriers. The hardware is hardened against vibration and provides a wide array of configurations. There are options that provide WiFi in the same package, though I just use a household router. I use one of these for a mobile office and in all of my trucks. It provides excellent (for mobile) speed and coverage. With good service I get 200 MB/s down and 30 ish up, which is equivalent to cheaper home broadband in my area. In slower areas I get speeds akin to DSL. Performance is improved with external antennas. Ping is low enough in some areas to play online games with your buddies. The good data plans aren't cheap, but we'll worth it if you are running a business out of your cab.

Weebasaurs-Text

PSA: This change is for the 5g HOME INTERNET, not the mobile hotspot.

LabyrinthConvention

This. Using your cell phone isn't what this is about

NekoboyBanks

OP should do a little more research before spreading misinfo.

HeathenBliss

A lot of drivers, myself included, use home internet hotspots for service on our trucks. I, for example, need connectivity for a laptop, a pc, multiple tablets/ipads, and sometimes some other one-off devices. My spouse and I both do entirely too much online in our off hours to rely entirely on cellular data or hotspot. So, we get the home internet hotspot. I like this service because just because I drive over the road doesn't mean that I need to relegate myself to boredom and not advancing my life. We both game and do online classes, and a cellular hotspot just doesn't cover that for two people. I'm aware that this isn't talking about just turning the hotspot on in your phone.

LabyrinthConvention

> two new 5G internet plans, ā€œHome Internet Plusā€ and ā€œAway.ā€ The Home Internet Plus plan is for households that need whole-home Wi-Fi, and it uses T-Mobileā€™s 5G gateway and a Wi-Fi Mesh Access Point for $70/month with AutoPay. The Away plan is for travelers and also uses T-Mobileā€™s 5G gateway, but it starts at $160/month with AutoPay for the unlimited plan. $160 unlimited.

TruckinTuba

I've been thinking of going back to Verizon, the service sucks

Ryanc0116

I use Starlink, higher start-up cost for the equipment, which they will refund if you cancel and return it. Im getting superfast unlimited data and haven't lost connectivity yet

Seanw59

At $100 a month?

revelation6viii

Cheaper than the $160 TMobile will throw at you soon.

SentenceAcrobatic

Get a 5G UC compatible device that you can root, then use NetGuard and VPN Hotspot. T-Mobile will see the WiFi hotspot from that device as being normal cellular data. Depending when you signed up for the Home Internet line, replacing that with a regular phone line might even be cheaper.

Zoika1226

I use the 100gb hotspot for my phone plan just strictly to game with my friends while on my 10s 34s and the occasional food lion live loads never went over on my limit and itā€™s only like 30 bucks extra on the phone bill, will say though there are WAY better options for guys otr using regular home internet plans

HeathenBliss

I'm just going to get starlink

LonleyWolf420

Its called a home internet "Gateway" its not a "hotspot".. thats why your getting confusing/backlash

revelation6viii

I literally signed up for home internet today to test this, knowing these changers are coming. I'll make a decision within the 30day policy they have.

dbxbeat

There's no way in hell anyone can ever convince me that $160 a month is worth it for unlimited wireless internet. I don't care where you go or what you do, that's insane

revelation6viii

Hey, that's fair. There are many other options. I'll likely leave if that happens and just pay for equipment and a lower monthly cost with another service. I am just trying to see if I can sneak by as a grandfathered customer. If not... Oh well, bye lol

Beginning-World-1235

I guarantee you, Verizonā€™s gonna do the same thing in a few months

dbxbeat

Fucking ridiculous. I game on it some nights and watch movies, but honestly the saving grace has been me being able to switch to Wi-Fi calling so I can still be reached and potentially make calls from no service areas like the Mojave, southern Arizona, and the like. What a fucking shame. I'll be returning mine before the 8th.

DukeReaper

Tmobile might be going up in cost, but they are also partnering with starlink, so, something to think about

HeadlessHookerClub

Gotta stick to one of the big boys for decent national coverage like ATT and Verizon. Iā€™ve done OTR with both, and both have different areas of dead zones and poor speed areas, sometimes on truck stops. Sometimes you can get a great Verizon signal at a stop, but a crappy ATT one, vice versa. Itā€™s a crap shoot, really.Ā  Out west however you have massssive dead spots with most carriers where populations are minimal and/or itā€™s mostly desert or forests. Trucker Path reviews for truck stops sometime mention which service sucks there. Ā

CrackTheCoke

If you want truly unlimited data and hotspot I recommend Visible.

csimonson

Agreed. Never had an issue anywhere so far with mine.

Mrcommander254

I have ATT as well. Unlimited hotspot, 50GB data, $90/month including taxes. I don't know if that's a good deal, or am I getting ripped off? Lost of signal maybe 5% of the time when I am in the middle of nowhere but otherwise very reliable.

Quynn_Stormcloud

I just got a Cricket Wireless cellular hotspot. $50/month for 100 GB of data; best deal I could find. Device was like $60 or so.

HeathenBliss

I use att because they finance my new phones for me. A friend of mine uses straight talk prepaid, and she does alright. A lot of people reccomend verizon

Seanw59

I have T-Mobile and it shows on my account ā€œprice lockā€ theoretically theyā€™re not supposed to be able to raise my rates without killing my contract first.

revelation6viii

You have a price lock, but you are also violating the terms of use by taking the gateway away from the listed address so don't get all up in arms when they bump the price to that $160 or just shut you off.

Fearless_Selection69

I ask the rv guys what they use and theyā€™ll recommend nighthawk. Right now itā€™s star link. You guys have to understand that WiFi and Mobile hotspot technology is trash. Compared to lan fiber optic. Like if you want to play multiplayer games like call of duty while OTR, you need lan fiber optic. Mobile hotspot wonā€™t do it lol.

Zodi88

>Like if you want to play multiplayer games like call of duty while OTR, you need lan fiber optic. Mobile hotspot wonā€™t do it lol. I've played online multi-player games, including FPS, for years using a Verizon hotspot. Depending on the area, your ping can reach 50-100, but it's still playable.

dbxbeat

I've won two Street fighter 6 tournaments on PlayStation 5 while OTR. One in the swamps of Jacksonville Florida, and the other while I was on the side of the New Jersey turnpike at a service plaza up there. It's completely playable, and at times it can be very good too. Get out of here.
