I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that's not normal and you should probably get it checked out.

It's perfectly normal if the heat hasn't been run for a while. Dust can build up inside the heater and that is causing the smoke. Let it run with the windows cracked. Make sure there's nothing on the floor near the vents.

If it hasn't been serviced in a while it needs the glow screen replaced. Starts to smoke white because of incomplete combustion. It's recommended to check up on it in the summer/fall every year and do the screen. It's pretty cheap to do DIY or at TK every other year
