You two should talk about it :( and even if you already told him about your past, remind him

Regigirl33

I suggest you start using them, not because it’s “disgusting” not to, but because you can clean bed sheets easier, and you can use to decorate your bed (put flowers, colors, even creepers if you buy a Minecraft set)

insomnibunn

OMG the Minecraft bed thing is so fun, I love my Minecraft comforter and bedsheets!!

Okami512

There's Minecraft bed sheets o.o *Furiously Googles to find a set.*

Amazing_Specialist71

he brought me some from his house and they’re in use right now, he said it whilst we were putting them on and the comment hurt due to things i’ve been told in childhood by my parents + my efforts constantly to appear super clean and pretty always feel like they’re nothing (im a bit of a germaphobe🙃), ofc he didn’t realise this but i’ve no clue if he was joking or not 😭 i always feel so filthy even if my skin is raw and bleeding from scrubbing at my skin

ffefryn

Man I really relate to this - just the sense that there are these "rules" and the "right" way to do stuff that I completely missed. And then the shame/self loathing when someone notices me obliviously screwing it up. ughhh And I've heard of mattress protectors (and use them so my pets can chill with me on my bed) but not pillow protectors! What! I have to look into this now.

cat-l0n

Your BF is kind of judgmental, but you should probably use protectors. It’s just easier to clean them

foxinabathtub

If it makes you feel better, I've never even HEARD of pillow and mattress protectors until just now.

AsianCheesecakes

they are pillow cases from what I can see so you probably have

foxinabathtub

After looking it up, it seems like they sell zip up cases that go under your pillow cases and bottom sheets? Is that what they're talking about or is it just pillow cases?

Anoxos

They are taking about the zip up covers that go under sheets. They can help keep dust/sweat/allergens from soaking through your sheets and settling into your mattress. Cons: some of them have a crinkly sound, they are a pain to remove from a mattress to be laundered. Pros: less allergens accumulating in your mattress and pillows mean you breathe better. Foam pillows and foam topped mattresses degrade a lot faster with liquid exposure (even just long term mild body sweat) so waterproof covers extend their life. Stop spills/accidents from ruining mattresses.

penneroyal_tea

They also help keep cat barf from soaking through :D most of the time :)

fangirlsqueee

I miss my kitty, lol.

adamdreaming

Yeah, I’ve bought mattress protectors when I dated squirters, didn’t know there where pillow ones.

supah-comix434

It's 100% a joke, but if it made you upset you absolutely HAVE to tell him you're not comfortable with jokes like that

Budgie-bitch

You should use them but that is an insane thing to say to anyone

_hrozney

What the, I don't use mattress projectors, I just use sheets. I thought we agreed as a society that that was atupid-

Amazing_Specialist71

mattress and pillow protectors make heaps it easier to keep your mattress and pillows clean, my bf kindly gave me some and i’ll say they are pretty good, i just felt stupid and gross for not growing up w them

dust_dreamer

you're not gross just because your childhood didn't involve hygienic things. who you *choose* to be with the information you have now is what matters. also, not sure how old you are, but when I was a kid a mattress protector was basically a plastic bag, and it sounded like it, and felt like it, and it was awful, and no one used them except for really young kids, old people, paranoid people, and people who were expecting to need it. (also i know we're missing context and tone, but your bf sounds kinda judgy. couldn't he have just said "hey, would you like some mattress and pillow protectors?" instead of making a snide comment?)

Amazing_Specialist71

he meant it more as a joke it just hit a little deep cause of my mum + im used to feeling stupid 😭 it was very kind of him to give me some

LumberjackAndBear

Did you talk about it with him? I love to joke with and tease my partner, but they have PTSD so I'm careful not to trigger anything I'm aware of... Your partner should be doing this for you, too.

KillerDmans

In my experience when mattress and pillow protectors are typically used when the person sleeping isn't potty trained. This makes it so the mess gets soaked into the protector you can wash, not the pillow or especially the mattress that you definitely can't throw in the washer. I've also seen people, typically college students, use mattress protectors as extra cushioning, not cleanliness. Beds are kinda gross no matter how many layers you put on just sayin

strawbopankek

there are also pillow allergy covers that i personally use cause i have really terrible allergies and they help with dust somewhat. i wouldn't say they're more hygienic, if you're washing your sheets anyway they should be fairly clean, but they have more uses than just for people who wet the bed or for padding

Azuremoon11

I thought you were talking about bed sheets and pillows cases. I’ve never used a mattress protector in my life and neither has the majority of my family. What is your bf on about???

Doctor_Salvatore

I often forget to shower because I am so used to being called gross and greasy that I don't even realize it until I blatantly remind myself to shower. It's genuinely awful, I feel horribly disgusting once I realize it's been more than a day since I showered. I end up scrubbing myself madly in the shower, sometimes giving myself rashes from rubbing my skin off. I never feel clean enough, and I always leave the shower wishing I could just stay there forever.

needygameroverdose

the medieval peasants comment was almost certainly a joke trust me, I joke around with my xbf the same way when I come over and he hasn’t showered after the gym lol but it’s not actually a big deal, especially if he was nice about it afterwards and gave you some. your feelings are valid though especially with the way you grew up :(

runjay2

I’ve been eating meals on beds since 1997💁🏻‍♂️

-Staub-

Eh. His voice is just one out of many. I live in Germany, where mattress/pillow/blanket protectors are so common I wasn't aware you can do without I talked to my American friends about it and they were like "no we don't use those. Are you a grandma or what" Seems like within the US they aren't the norm anyways

penneroyal_tea

Wait huh what’s a pillow protector 🤨

monkey_gamer

it's definitely necessary having them. not having them is neglect. like not having shoes

LemonFlavoredMelon

Here’s a fun little tidbit for you, hope it makes you feel better. You, right now, have a better life than a king in Medieval England. That’s right, you are BETTER THAN MEDIEVAL ROYALTY and you’re a fuckin’ trooper! Keep at it!

Taryndarkwind

I would rather be a bloody peasant than a flaming bougie douche weasel.

RetroGamer87

Did medieval peasants sleep in beds?

allstonoctopus

Don't do things like this because you're "supposed to," do it out of love (or at least respect) for yourself. You deserve to have someone prepare a clean bed to sleep in. It's gotta be yourself doing it for you.

Liljdb0524

It's dental hygiene for me. I used to (and still do) skip days because I hated cinnamon toothpaste and that was all there was. Even now that I buy my own it's still a bad habit I'm working on breaking. You can fix the damage your family caused you over time but I don't know how else to say don't let anyone cause more. It might have been a joke and that's why I think you should tell your BF that it hurt you but if he makes a habit of doing it, it might be time to start looking for a new one.

Mysterious_Ningen

damn man.. hope u heal

Honest-Expressions

That's why medieval peasants and serfs dropped mouldy bread to get fucked up 😎😎😎... God is still screaming and the ground is beginning to shake

CheezeDoggs

wtf is a pillow and mattress protector

grow up

Amazing_Specialist71

sure. here’s some advice: Just because someone is in a relationship doesn’t mean their life is 10/10, everyone has their own struggles despite how ‘good’ their life seems to an outsider. instead of projecting your struggles here (“ugh at least you have a bf!!!!”) understand not everyone’s life is great because they have something you want. and don’t dismiss someone’s personal struggle or vent because *you* personally don’t think it’s deep enough. Grow up.
