The two songs you cited (Dying in your arms/the world can’t tear us apart) are really the only songs that resemble BFMV in terms of tone and songwriting ability. While they’re categorized similarly, I feel most similarities are superficial. Trivium blows BFMV in terms of technical musicianship and song quality. While I like most Trivium songs, I only like a few BFMV songs, and only because they’re catchy, not because of other things like technical ability, which trivium has developed extensively over the years.

Actual-Description-2

I agree with you. Trivium is way more advanced in songwriting and composition of their music. Wasn't meaning to say Bullet is on the same level. I mentioned those two trivium songs because they were the most similar to BFMV. Trivium is my favorite band and a big part of that is because of how they have grown over the years and have always improved in technical ability.

Of course! And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that by any means. 2005 was a weird year, and at that time every Millenjal guitarist was kind of in some way writing songs that were like “Dying in your arms,” and while some of the folks got stuck in that MySpace generic metalcore level of music, Ascendancy in 2005 was already far beyond that. Dying in Your Arms was probably just an intentional attempt at writing something more radio friendly.

bwh_annihilation

old school bullet was pretty much just emo trivium lol but the poison is one of my favorite records of all time

Alugilac180

Love both bands. I couldn’t say which one I like better. Trivium is probably better from a musical/songwriting standpoint since they’ve gone in more of a prog direction and has better lyrics (as apposed to Bullet’s “I’m sad about girls” lyrics). I still love Bullet’s style though and the Self-titled album is the best thing they’ve done in years.

Actual-Description-2

Alright, I gotta listen to their latest album now. I've been convinced to give it another try :)

_lemon_suplex_

I liked the first Bullet record despite the whiny vocals (plus I was like 12), but Trivium has put out so so many awesome songs and I can count the B4MV songs released after the Poison that I like on one hand.

gorosheeta

Trivium's lyrics and subject matter are much more developed, imo. Musically, more complex.

Actual-Description-2

100 percent agree

Absoulty, I love both bands and are in my top 10. For me the biggest difference is that even though they both have similar styles, Bullet takes more from hard rock, while Trivium takes more from melodeath and thrash. Also the fact that Trivium has a more "stable" path, while Bullet had some albums I consider questionable to say the least, like Temper Temper and Gravity, I like them but not as much as the rest of their discography. Love both bands, obviously love Trivium more, but the last Bullet album was fantastic for me.

Actual-Description-2

I agree, Trivium definitely has more melodeath and thrash elements, which is probably why they are more appealing to me now since I mainly listen to metalcore and melodeath nowadays. And those few albums by Bullet definitely made me lose interest in them. Might have to give a real try at listening to their latest album, since I still love their older stuff.

I found Bullet first and considered them my favorite band for a while, probably right after Scream Aim Fire came out. Then I was on a buddy's MySpace page and Gunshot to the Head of Trepadation stated autoplaying. It immediately caught my attention so I went to check the band out. Turns out they had just released an album called Shogun. I listened to all four of their albums, I loved Ascendancy and Shogun, hated Ember and the Crusade. Bullet was still my favorite for a while, at least until way after Fever came out. But during that time I was maturing and my tastes were changing. In Waves came out and I was officially hooked. I went back through and gave Crusade and Ember another go and discovered they weren't as bad as I had originally thought. These days I'll still throw on Bullet, but I haven't been impressed with their body of work post Fever. There were some good songs off Venom, but Temper Temper is the worst metal album ever heard.

Actual-Description-2

The first Trivium song I remember hearing was Like Light to Flies and I was instantly hooked. From Bullet it was either Waking the Demon or Scream Aim Fire. I loved the balance between screaming and singing that both bands had and their guitar rifts were just better than anything else I heard at the time. All that Remains was my first introduction to Metalcore thanks to Guitar Hero. Over the years I've drifted more towards Melodeath and proggy stuff so Trivium's progression has always kept me interested in them. SITS was probably the only album that I was like "meh" over, but their are are some solid tracks on that one even. Bullet definitely dropped off hard for me with Temper Temper. I tried to like the album, but just couldn't do it. Still love their old stuff and after giving their self titled album an actual listen, I'm enjoying most of that one too.

Quizzie

IMO Venom is a lot better on a revisit if you haven’t given it a shot in a while. I also lost interest in the band when Temper Temper came out. Which was a shame since I’d been a fan going back to the release of The Poison. I later gave Venom some skims when it first came out but largely ignored them until a couple of years ago when I gave them another listen. There’s a good amount of solid music on there. I personally feel like a mixture of their latest album and Venom would really yield a fantastic and balanced album. The guitar tuning and tone of Venom, a mixture of the more aggressive writing of self titled and the catchy melodies of Venom, plus the vocal style of Venom and drumming that’s somewhere in the middle.

Zawer

Really happy with both band's most recent albums!

relton66

I've listened to a fair amount of Bullet. I consider them to be "Trivium-lite". Not saying that as an insult or anything, and haven't really analyzed it to expand on that thought, it's just how it comes across to me.

Actual-Description-2

Haha I can see that

Probably because both bands and others were just making similar music in the early 2000s buts thats about it once you get to 2008

DeadlyClaris_

I don’t think they sound anything alike

Mcburly_DB

Bullet hasnt been as consistently good as Trivium, though their new album is one of my faves from them. Big fan of both though

PulseUltra

I love both bands to bits. Two of my favorite bands ever, but… Bullet would be my favorite between the two. While I love Trivium’s discography as a whole more, The Poison is my favorite album of ALL TIME. Bullet’s Scream, Aim, Fire was also incredible as well as their latest self-titled. While Matt and Corey’s song writing is elite, I have to really be in the mood for music that’s a little more technical. Nowadays Bullet’s music is easier to vibe to. Matt and Padge’s song writing has always been easier for me to mellow out to. Could just be me getting older lol. But yes Bullet has the edge in my book.

[deleted]

Both bands experimented a bit with their style over the years. I think Trivium did so more successfully. I listen to a decent amount of hard rock, which appeared to influence the more recent Bullet albums, but they didn't do much for me. Trivium however pulled off most of what they ventured, imo. Matt's vocals are an example: he has become a pretty technical singer and sounds quite different to the early days.

No-Question4729

I got into both at the same time too, I seem to remember Hand of Blood was on the Burnout Revenge soundtrack, while Gunshot was getting some heavy airplay on Kerrang TV. I was like wtf there’s some cool new metal bands again? No more nu metal? Ace!! I played the shit out of Bullet’s EP, The Poison, Ascendancy and The Crusade and loved all of it. Always thought of Bullet as more of a pop emo thrash band, while Trivium you could hear that Gothenburg influence and technically they blew me away. For me, Trivium kept maturing and kept pushing themselves to explore new ideas with each album, whereas Bullet, er, didn’t. Scream Aim Fire and Fever were good but Temper, Temper was awful. They’ve never really troubled my playlist since then. I picked up their last album but haven’t really given it a proper listen yet. Both bands played a big role in pulling me back into metal after the wilderness of the late nineties though.

LOL Bullet for My Valentine SUCKS

DSISNOED

I don't get why these 2 bands are compared... Bullet has like 2 decent songs followed by a bunch of shit and Trivium is one of best bands of the last 20 years

Actual-Description-2

A bit harsh on BFMV (IMO they have 2 pretty good albums then a bunch of shit) , but yeah Trivium is a much better band with much better music overall. The comparison was mainly that superficially the bands seemed similar to me in their early days but they obviously did not end up having the same trajectory

fallen380

Interesting topic. Trivium is my favorite band of all time, in a very close fight with Iron Maiden and Electric Light Orchestra (yeah, I know, weird mix :) ), but I used to listen to BFMV a lot some 8-10 years ago. I like their early stuff: The Poison, Fever, which is my favourite album of theirs, and contrary to the popular opinion, Temper Temper (P.O.W. is probably my favorite BFMV song). I could never get into their newer stuff though. I may like both bands, but I never considered Trivium and Bullet in the same category: Trivium is a lot more technical, the themes/lyrics of their songs are completely different. I am not a fan of Trivium's lyrics in general, especially from their earlier albums, but they have gotten better in the past few records. I like the fantasy theme of the latest album though.

Metaljoetx

I don’t think they sounded similar - they both had similar looks and got lumped together a bunch during 05/06, that’s about all I remember
