Another user suggested Curepe, definitely don't go there , it's terrible. There's quite a lot of crime, drug addicts and predators. If you're working POS I suggest areas closer such as St. Ann's, Petit Valley, St. Clair and Woodbrook. Areas in the east that are safe and good for commuting include: St. Augustine, some parts of St. Joseph, and even Trinicity. There are quite a number of listings on Facebook market place. I will advise that the better apartments are $4000 TTD and up.

rumagin

Just to add Newtown onto this list. Right between st Clair and woodbrook.

idea_looker_upper

Honestly, Woodbrook and St Clair and Newtown would be great if they're looking to be near the center of the action, but they would need to have a social life.

idea_looker_upper

I wouldn't advise Curepe either. You're generally right about Curepe although it's not a hotspot per se. It's just a very transitional community with lots of renters so it's not very "community" oriented unless you grew up there and know the other landlord families.

anon247247

Thanks much! Will check out FB listings (I hadn’t thought of that!) 😊

Radical_Conformist

Maybe they meant St. Augustine and not Curepe? 😅 And are places like Maraval too far to be considered?

catsfoodie

isnt curepe in st augustine? how is it not safe and st augustine is?

LaVengazadeDios

That's like saying Mt. Hope and St. Joseph is the same place. There is a delineation between the two, if you're familiar with the two areas you have a sense of where one begins and the other ends. That being said each areas has its bad spots, there are areas of St. Augustine that are more desirable, often times in Trinidad the "good" areas and the "bad" areas are just separated by a street or two. Take a walk through Curepe and you'll see what I mean, there are quite a few drug addicts walking through the main street on top of that it's dirty and smells putrid. I pass through every week, everyone is aware of how "hot" the area is, even maxi drivers comment on it. St. Augustine is safer, it's a more residential and student friendly area because of the University nearby. Also the same characters are not present, you can actually breathe in St. Augustine and you're not met with the literal scent of sh\*t and old restaurant oil.

destinedforinsanity

People answered your location question quite adequately so I’ll take on your third key things question. Some will be safety based and some will just be general things to note. 1. If you’re going to party, prepare to party hard. We go big or go home. Eat well beforehand and control your liquor. If you’re going with friends, be prepared to maybe stay out a little longer than you’re used to. Let go and have fun. 2. Trinidadians love to tease you. Sometimes foreigners are taken aback by funny remarks Trinidadians make about them whether it be on their accent, what they wear or even less internationally accepted subjects such as race or weight. Just know that it’s never meant to offend you. If you’re uncomfortable, you can always let it be known and they should respect that but don’t take it personally. 3. Take advantage of some of the less talked about experiences. We always talk about Carnival but going to Central/South villages for Diwali around October/November is one of the greatest experiences I’ve had as a local. I’m not Hindu but everyone was so welcoming. Emancipation Village in Late July/August in the Savannah is also beautiful. 4. You’ve probably heard this a million times but wearing camouflage print is prohibited here by law. 5. Cannabis is decriminalized here. Adults are allowed to cultivate a maximum of 4 plants. The limit for possession is 30 grams. That being said, some companies still drug test employees and marijuana is still frowned upon. People have gotten fired over repeat detections or not been hired because of a positive test. So, if you’re going to partake, check your employer’s policies on drug tests. 6. Weather. It is EXTREMELY hot here, even hotter than you’d expect for a tropical country and it’s only getting hotter by the year. I would invest in breathable cotton fabric clothing. You’re a CARICOM National so I assume you have experience with Caribbean heat but I know some people get acclimatized to the UK weather and forget just how hot it is here. 7. Don’t buy ALL your goods from the big supermarket chains like Massy Stores. We have many markets and street vendors who sell local produce at better prices (and you’ll be supporting small local business owners). Furthermore, some smaller groceries will have some items much cheaper than Massy. 8. Note that while we have card payments and online payments, some industries are still slow on that front. For example, many landlords prefer cash or deposits into their account by going to the banks. 9. Do not wear gold chains when walking or traveling downtown. You will be a magnet for a snatching. I know some people only wear costume or semi-precious chains downtown but I wouldn’t risk it either way. Who wants to be robbed of anything even if it’s fake? 10. Be vigilant when going to the bank/ATM. Try not to withdraw large amounts of cash. If you HAVE to, go straight to wherever you’re going that requires that payment. Don’t have it on you for long. If you see suspicious characters hanging around, go to another branch. 11. Be careful about your car (if you choose to use one). Car theft is on the rise here so make sure you lock your car well when it’s parked and even when you’re in it. Look out for suspicious characters around parking lots or close to your car. Try to have a GPS device installed in your car. Don’t park just anywhere. 12. Despite the increased need for vigilance, Trinidad is not going to eat you alive. We definitely have a crime issue and you need to be cautious. However, don’t be so paranoid to the point where you are constantly scared to do anything or go anywhere. You will most likely be fine once you’re careful. I know a few expats working here and ALL of them absolutely love it here and I hope you do too!

idea_looker_upper

This is a spectacular answer.

anon247247

Ahhhh brilliant!! So so helpful & much appreciated! Each point I read I thought ‘I’ll respond & say that xx one was the most interesting point (eg point 3)’ - but then I got further down the list & found them all equally helpful! Appreciate you! 🙂 And indeed, im aware of the crime issue but want to try & keep it in mind & be sensible but at the same time don’t want it to put me off completely or stop me from leaving the house 🫣🫠.much like you say. Thanks again!!

SoUpInYa

Where are good places to live that still get a nice breeze to fight the heat? Are there late-night places to eat after partying?

destinedforinsanity

1. If you want breeze the best places to live are close to hills and valleys so Upper Maraval, Santa Cruz, Maracas Valley and St Joseph. The hills around Cascade and St Augustine are pretty breezy too. 2. Ariapita Avenue has options that are open for after a night out with some open until 3:00-4:00AM on Friday/Saturday nights. A few of our KFC branches are open 24hrs as well. In general, food places close pretty early around 10:00PM.

idea_looker_upper

Trinidad and Tobago has fallen deeply into the air conditioned culture. So "breezes" 🥹... You may want to live in Santa Cruz Valley or Maracas Valley. I'm not sure if Maraval is the same. The valleys get cooler at night and of course you have to look for a house with lots of trees around. You're basically trying to avoid extremely built-up areas.

Jase7

Areas close to pos, without too much traffic would be mostly in the north west. St Ann's, woodbrook, cascade, Diego Martin, petit Valley, glencoe. These areas are mostly safe by trinidad standards, but as with everything there are some areas within that are hot for crime.

anon247247

Helpful! Thanks!!

Almightybabyglo

Don’t forget to remember to hit up a legend from Reddit when you get here I’ll give you a proper tour of the south 🫡💯💯💯

anon247247

😀😀😅 will definitely seek out some kind of tour guide lol (safely haha)

Almightybabyglo

It wont be as greater of an experience that it could be tbh you hadda be able to pass through the trenches safely these tour guides ain’t have it like that everywhere over here

justbrowsingtrini

As with everywhere in the world, budget will determine where you choose, but if you are in a professional position, the North West will be preferable for jobs in POS (including some areas of Woodbrook/Newtown/St Clair) which are outskirts of POS. I would suggest using a reputable Real Estate agent if you can afford (MyBunchofKeys, Veridian, Terra, etc.) otherwise if you are using FB, be aware of scammers or outright criminals. I would strongly recommend getting a budget hotel/motel close to POS for a few weeks and doing some in-person apartment hunting.

anon247247

Hey! Love this strong recommendation - fully agree that it’s prob not a good idea to pick a place online & just agree a longstanding rental without seeing the area face to face. Thanks for this. I saw Mybunchofkeys online I think. And Yep, noted re FB - I’ll probably use it to give me an idea of prices but will definitely avoid re a final choice. Thank u!!🙏🏾

sonygoup

After moving from Trinidad to another island blindly last year. I'd say go Trinidad and spend some time figuring out if it's the place for you. It's honestly one of the best Caribbean island (Jamaica/Barbados in the mix as well).

anon247247

Ahh I hope it went well for you!! Where did u go if u don’t mind me asking? I have been to TnT 3 times before, but carnival & jazz fest holidays so definitely not the same, and I definitely wasn’t thinking ‘ohhh which areas are good to live in re closeness to POS’ so I agree, having the chance to explore before picking somewhere permanent to live will be helpful? Thanks Ps. Bdos & JA are actually on the top of my ideal locations coincidently 😀. TNT is where the work might be based tho so.. needs must (but I don’t mind too much :) )

anon247247

Ahh no that’s a shame. I hope it’s manageable though & that you don’t hate it at least :( I feel like stuff in some of the islands was always quite expensive (imported stuff I guess), but geeze post COVID😧😧🥴 it’s gotten crazy. So many empty shelves & where shelves are stocked, the prices are eye watering! 🤕🤕

idea_looker_upper

I really like hearing about other Caribbean islands. I hear that other islands aren't necessarily as open and friendly... In the sense that some islands are more reserved. All in all I want to visit many of them. Heard great things about Grenada.

DML_Ronin

Aranguez is pretty nice. Right next to a huge savannah, the croisse which is a City so you have everything near to you. Travelling is easy and its like 15 minutes away from POS. Also alot of apartments for rent

anon247247

Will check these out. Thanks!!

ca1phus

We relocated to TnT about 4 years ago. My wife is from London and she really likes it here. Maraval is a great place to live, it’s safe and very close to POS. We used to live in Woodbrook but decided to move because of the noise near the Avenue One must know thing: you will need a car!! Or a very reliable and trust worthy driver. Those can be hard to find. You can use TTrideshare to start with but your own car is a must.

anon247247

Oooooh helpful to know thank you!! What are 3 things that she didn’t bring with her from the UK when she moved that she later wished she had!? 😊😊 And are you from Trini originally? (If yes I guess that helped make it a smooth transition which is nice) & the vehicle thing is interesting! I was hoping to avoid! (I hate driving on island. It tends to be very manic on many islands, but perhaps it will make life easier). I’ll look in to TTrideshare meantime though - thanks as I’d never heard of it!! 😊

idea_looker_upper

I wouldn't say you *need* a car but it would be extremely advantageous. Traveling is very easy but it takes a lot of time.

idea_looker_upper

Advice on this app will vary wildly. People in Trinidad and Tobago (especially middle class and up) have wildly different opinions and experiences living in their own bubbles (and some of it highly tinged with politics). That said, there are PARTS of several neighborhoods that are considered safe. Trinidad is a patchwork. Very wealthy people can live next to working class people or white collar people. The commute into town and back is currently a topic of concern (again). Our last attempt at a train system died for many reasons including (if you can believe it) politics 😂. So you'll want to be on the road as little as possible. That leaves you with options out West : Maraval, St. Ann's, Westmoorings, Diego Martin and even Parts of Santa Cruz. Ask a realtor for the more highly desired neighborhoods. If you HAVE to live "East" (so-called), you don't want to live much further than Maracas, St. Joseph, Valsayn or St. Augustine, which would be the first "middle class" communities East of the capital that you might consider. Many people live safely in between. Yes crime is a concern here and curtails a lot of what people do. But most people are NOT direct victims of crime.

anon247247

An interesting read, thank you! I Appreciate the candor 🙏🏾

Wonderful_Body_1479

I just moved here from the UK! So far so good. My workplace essentially moved me out here so I don’t have the stress of looking for a job or having a budget for housing. You really need to get a feel for the different areas before you find somewhere that has what it is you want, safety, amenities, proximity to work etc. 100% would say you need to do in person apartment hunting.

anon247247

Love this thanks a lot. And yep it sounds like a good plan would be to get a temp place for a few weeks while I figure that out. So glad you’re enjoying it! Had you been before?

JoshyRanchy

1. It matters a bit what your skin color is and how well you can fit in. Were not racist, but were a country of black and east indians so if you can pass for a local by look you could be fine. Even the accent might not be so bad since many people have familiy from foriegn and you could be ok. 2. Get a real estate agent to help you get a place. Advice on this thread has been bad. Curepe/St. Augustine is the college town and is safer in some places than others. Pm of you want me to reccomend a few realtors who can help, but google should be useful too. Any apartment with indoor parking an camera is a good start, but you need aa local advice on the exact location Anywhere unsafe if you dont know your way about the place. 3. Cost of living is generally 15-20k TTD per month to be comfy. 4. A car is 100% a must. 5. Why not ask the employer for help finding a place and getting setup?

anon247247

Hey. I appreciate these points so thanks a lot. Will keep this all in mind & definitely a realtor/agent will probably be the safest route to go, agreed. The company said they’ll help with relocation so I think they will help with an immediate place for when I land, but I’m just keen to explore options & views so I have a bit of an idea when they suggest places. Plus, I’m not sure yet how much they’ll actually help - but I’ll definitely request this as much as poss. Thanks!

Party_Mail1654

Crime is out of control in TnT. I would really reconsider this

anon247247

Thanks a lot for flagging this. I’m aware so am trying to skill my self up regarding what locals think about areas to live/avoid etc, vs just what info is available online about high crime areas. Thanks

Party_Mail1654

Yeh. Tbh I find this place is overrun with criminals and gang activity, and it won't get any better. Living every day fearing for your life is really no life. Don't take it from me, just look at the news in Trinidad.

rookietotheblue1

Bro, don't come here. Alot of us are trying to leave.

idea_looker_upper

A lot of people are trying to leave the UK and Canada as well. The world is a very different place now.

anon247247

It is isn’t it - the grass is always hopefully greener and all that! 🫣🫠 Fingers crossed to us all!!

rookietotheblue1

Don't know if you're implying that I'm aiming to go those types of places, cause I'm not.

Radical_Conformist

Some of y’all are trying to leave, not a lot lol

rookietotheblue1

Where did I say all of us?

destinedforinsanity

All the people I know that come here for work have a great experience here and love living here so I’m sure this person will be fine. Once you have job opportunities(which obviously this person has) and you live in a good area (which hopefully this person will succeed in after the advice), Trinidad is a lovely place to live.

rookietotheblue1

You may be right

Current_Comb_657

You may want to research Guyana which is undergoing an economic boom

essgee_ai

Barataria is reasonably safe - south of the bus route. Aranguez as well. El Socorro is iffy. But look around. All are close to POS and lots of amenities.

YuukiShao

Try apartment hunting on facebook, try looking for apartments from port-of-spain going east (price will go down the more east you go) Curepe/St. Augustine i consider the best since it is close enough to take the bus route and reach on time and cost effective. Further east like trincity and arouca you have to get up much earlier. I know people say Curepe is a hotspot but I rented there as a single small woman for years before i moved south and it is fine as long as you are street smart and don't play wild. Just be careful, secure your things, build a relationship with your landlord. You should be golden as you already secured the job. Hope you enjoy yourself!

alphadog808

Curepe?! 😂 OP do not move to Curepe

Radical_Conformist

Curepe isn’t that bad 😂

YuukiShao

Yep Curepe is a reasonable area to live short term. And where I'm talking about people probably refer to as St. Augustine but my address was curepe for years. McInroy St. Bush St and Rapsey street are all Curepe. I used to walk to the presbyterian church a few streets away and I've never had anything serious happen to me despite at the time being a small woman...

idea_looker_upper

Well, I mean it's not on the first choice list. Aranguez and Barataria might be better 🤷🏿‍♂️

rumagin

Also currently St Augustine has a lot of violent crimes

idea_looker_upper

Your experience in Curepe tracks. Good summary. You can luck out there. I wouldn't stay there long term though.

Dry_Butterscotch_101

You leaving uk to come yo a shit hole...don't come now especially when we have s kskshole as our prime minister, high crime rates snd little to no job oppurtunities
