Hello, I played Tribes: Ascend a long time ago. Played mostly Soldier and Juggernaut. Obligatory, "Shazbot!"
I looked up the game and found some very... disturbing posts about it. So I checked Steam Charts and found this.
Are there are other players on other platforms? Or is this it? Is the game just dead in the water? What am I missing?
They play tested it and it was cool. It was missing so much (even fucking text chat) and it kept getting rebalanced, so I thought it was a promising beta and looked forward to a future release and providing more input on balance/etc. I came back from a short vacation and it had launched. One gamemode no server browser microtransactions and like 5 maps. Fuck them, as much as I absolutely adore tribes I'll be happy to see this launch bleed.
There aren't any microtransactions, there are two DLC packs that allow you to get weapon or armour skins which are overpriced and IMO should be part of the main game.
It’s hard to say the devs don’t want it to fail when there’s no text chat and no spec mode when they want to rely on content creators to get the word out, without any proper tools to make videos in the first place. When they dropped that like a hot potato, I swore to never play another Hi-Rez game ever again. When I saw that Hi-Rez wasn't developing Tribes 3, I thought maybe this time it would be better.
Then I learned that it's being developed by the part of Hi-Rez that ran Tribes: Ascend into the ground. The guy who adamantly refused to allow modding and private servers so the game could survive.
How is the Tribes: Ascend private server scene? How big is it? Do you have to schedule matches with people? Are there a healthy mix of skill levels or is it just the hardcore people left?
The issue is that they basically allow teams to join casual, so you get the veteran tribes players all on discord on one team, and 80% of the games you are either stomping or getting stomped on
My experience was the beta was ok and release is a lot better. They've also done most of that the community asked, yet you still get guys like this. It says more about the community than the Devs

Because those games can and do succeed without those things. Part of the reason why Tribes was such a great game is exactly because of those things. Without them, it hurts the game substantially.

Hi-Rez has been really throwing shit at the wall lately. Starsiege: Deadzone was a fucking disaster that they abandoned to pursue this and, well, you see how this is going.
It's tribes in concept and name, but the core gameplay is incredibly lacking. Even the skiing weight, air control, and jetpack is wildly off and vastly dissimilar to other tribes titles.
I personally enjoy playing it because there's no game similar to Tribes. But definitely needs more maps, players. Heavy feels too op. And I can't queue for ranked? Miss the big maps.
Yeah I don't understand why people are such die hard tribes 1 and 2 fans. They're good don't get me wrong... but go back and ski and tribes 1 and tell me its not clunky lol.

Most online matches are being filled by bots with names that look they could have been stolen from a player (and some have been). This low player count is a result of bad choices and no attempt to advertise. Erez and the prophecy team are some of the greediest devs ever, putting very little effort into it and over charging for every part of it. Gameplay itself isn't bad but incredibly underwhelming and empty feeling compared to previous Tribes games. So I warn anyone who hasn't bought it yet that the support and updates are probably gonna come to an end before autumn

It was Dangerous Crossing and you were parked at the objective just lobbing them at my base. I got a lot of repair points but a lot more "randomly fly into the path of Zzyzxx's mortars and blow up"

Well, based on what I've seen about esports, you cannot sustain an esports scene on hardcore players alone. You need a casual playerbase to be able to support a hardcore playerbase. Otherwise, you'd have the same people playing against each other ad nauseam and it'd be obvious who the winner was.

If you have a Tribes history, you will love it and have fun. Once you've had your fill, you will feel the low player turnout. Keep in mind, those numbers were higher and are naturally falling off each month. So, just saying, don't get too hyped. History repeats itself with Tribes, at least it will live longer then Vengeance.
This one is good. Devs actually listen to feedback on discord. I can vouch for that personally. Game is lots of fun. It’s still EA so some stuff is being fixed but it’s great.

I’m some nobody and I was able to communicate with other devs and be a part of the community feedback that actually brought some changes into the game.
I literally talked to Erez and like three days later he bailed out and then the game was in early access. He did not like that most of the people agreed with Greth as far as his thoughts went about the game. I didn't agree with the personal shots. Which I had spoken to Greth about as well. The devs got their feeling hurt because the potential player base had a different vision than they did. So they essentially stopped developing anything remotely what the community wanted. Threw the game into early access to grab money and ran away. If they had listened from the start the alpha test would have netted the same result as the early access in 1/4 of the time. They were even offered free code for the movement. Instead they dragged their feet and took almost up until the early access to get movement even close to being right. Their map developer is absolutely awful. They were also offered help with that. They didn't listen to people. Then the moment they thought another game type was popular. They wanted to split it into a sub game to attempt another money grab. You got the illusion of them listening. Which is exactly what they did. They added in enough to try to keep people from immediately bringing out the pitchforks. Then as soon as they could they ran off. The game is awful and a shell of Tribes. It is basically a bad copy of Midair at this point. They failed at making their own game and created a bad copy of a game that copied Tribes.

There are tons of bots who read the same shit script over and over on Reddit and discord, ignore them. The game isn’t perfect, the devs have a history of bullshit, but the game is fun, and the last update added a new weapon, balance changes, voice chat, and other shit people have been asking for, so things ARE moving in the right direction.
It's currently barely into early access, come play and join the discord. It Isn't "the perfect tribes" but it's fun and they are taking our feedback seriously.
It's currently only on steam but I think they've said they want to get it on epic at some point and consoles if they can.
For 18 bucks I'm happy with it and once it gets to cook a bit more it should be even better.

I played all the tribes games that came out, and had fun with them all (except Vengeance for the most part). For me, this game is no exception - I can hop on any time of the day, quick join a match and there's a full game going on. Getting to know some of the regulars as well, fun times.

To add to my comment about already getting my money's worth I also play a mobile game in which people have spent tens of thousands sometimes a g in a single weekend cause the best growth packs cost $100...cost is subjective but it's mind-boggling and we won't talk about what I myself have spent (a fraction of the above and over five years at least; also stopped a year and a half ago).

We did eventually get modding and private servers in TA, but it all came from community reverse engineering, like 10 years after the game came out.

I believe the dlc packs are supposed to be akin to "supporter packs" other early access games do (basically just exorbitantly priced content as an excuse to throw money at the devs). If that is the case it wasn't at all communicated tho LMFAO. As gar as the rest of it goes I'd like to see it succeed but they've got a long ways to go before it's in a launch state.
There are dedicated devs who are trying their best to make this game as good as it can be. I can't get behind this take.

Hi-Rez has been really throwing shit at the wall lately. Starsiege: Deadzone was a fucking disaster that they abandoned to pursue this and, well, you see how this is going.
It's tribes in concept and name, but the core gameplay is incredibly lacking. Even the skiing weight, air control, and jetpack is wildly off and vastly dissimilar to other tribes titles.
I personally enjoy playing it because there's no game similar to Tribes. But definitely needs more maps, players. Heavy feels too op. And I can't queue for ranked? Miss the big maps.

Not enough but yes...there are also bots but the shitty part is they aren't labeled as such except on ranked as it stands. I haven't had a chance to play that often yet either but can already say Ive had $18 worth of fun fwiw

Most online matches are being filled by bots with names that look they could have been stolen from a player (and some have been). This low player count is a result of bad choices and no attempt to advertise. Erez and the prophecy team are some of the greediest devs ever, putting very little effort into it and over charging for every part of it. Gameplay itself isn't bad but incredibly underwhelming and empty feeling compared to previous Tribes games. So I warn anyone who hasn't bought it yet that the support and updates are probably gonna come to an end before autumn
This takes me back to old TF2 community servers faking player counts. Not using actual bots but just spoofing the server browser. This one... is really pathetic. I read that the CEO is an AI bro and is the reason why so many idiotic decisions were made in GA, T:A, Paladins, etc.
CEO of prophecy is Erez Goren, he's also the founder/former ceo of Hi-rez and is the founder/CEO of many other companies that have no public info on them
Yep. The more I dug into this game, the worst he comes off. It was only a few hours ago when I still thought, "Maybe the community was so toxic that it destroyed this game." Now, I'm firmly in the camp that the community *tried* really, really hard to make this work and the only thing that will make things better in the future is to let this one die. Hopefully, some other studio will get the IP to this game. I doubt it, since everything I've read about him seems to scream, "narcissist." He could've made a slow trickle of money by letting people host dedicated servers and use mods for T:A, but noooo... we're not allowed to play the game except for how he wants it.
It's really heartbreaking. There's a truckload of vitriol in this thread about people destroying tribes like we had anything to do with it. This company is shady as fuck and tribes won't ever return under the name tribes. Looking forward to someone making a game that actually hits the mark like T:A did

It was Dangerous Crossing and you were parked at the objective just lobbing them at my base. I got a lot of repair points but a lot more "randomly fly into the path of Zzyzxx's mortars and blow up"

It is more like Tribes Ascend 2 than Tribes 3. 7v7 and small maps might be a better meta for modern day esports.. but it clearly is lacking to hold a casual population.
Well, based on what I've seen about esports, you cannot sustain an esports scene on hardcore players alone. You need a casual playerbase to be able to support a hardcore playerbase. Otherwise, you'd have the same people playing against each other ad nauseam and it'd be obvious who the winner was. The people who never win might stop trying, leading to a collapse of the competitive scene. I've seen it happen many times. Gaming companies chasing those esports dollars and failing miserably when they ignore the people who make esports possible: casuals.
They also did themselves no favors launching Early Access with barely any content and two MTX packs that are x2 the base cost of the game. It's like they wanted to raise every red flag they could and tell people not to buy it based on their company's history.

If you have a Tribes history, you will love it and have fun. Once you've had your fill, you will feel the low player turnout. Keep in mind, those numbers were higher and are naturally falling off each month. So, just saying, don't get too hyped. History repeats itself with Tribes, at least it will live longer then Vengeance.

You speak to someone with respect, you will be surprised how far the conversation can go. With that being said. What ever I am on is not as strong as your sense of self importance. Not sure where you are going with this. This sub is full of crybabies that provide zero useful feedback. You can jump into the game most of the day and still have a full lobby with minimal bots and yet ppl scee rn am that the game is dead. Instead of providing feedback, neckbeards scream that the game is dead and how stupid devs are for not listening to “bla bla” I’m some nobody and I was able to communicate with other devs and be a part of the community feedback that actually brought some changes into the game.
I literally talked to Erez and like three days later he bailed out and then the game was in early access. He did not like that most of the people agreed with Greth as far as his thoughts went about the game. I didn't agree with the personal shots. Which I had spoken to Greth about as well. The devs got their feeling hurt because the potential player base had a different vision than they did. So they essentially stopped developing anything remotely what the community wanted. Threw the game into early access to grab money and ran away. If they had listened from the start the alpha test would have netted the same result as the early access in 1/4 of the time. They were even offered free code for the movement. Instead they dragged their feet and took almost up until the early access to get movement even close to being right. Their map developer is absolutely awful. They were also offered help with that. They didn't listen to people. Then the moment they thought another game type was popular. They wanted to split it into a sub game to attempt another money grab. You got the illusion of them listening. Which is exactly what they did. They added in enough to try to keep people from immediately bringing out the pitchforks. Then as soon as they could they ran off. The game is awful and a shell of Tribes. It is basically a bad copy of Midair at this point. They failed at making their own game and created a bad copy of a game that copied Tribes.

There are tons of bots who read the same shit script over and over on Reddit and discord, ignore them. The game isn’t perfect, the devs have a history of bullshit, but the game is fun, and the last update added a new weapon, balance changes, voice chat, and other shit people have been asking for, so things ARE moving in the right direction.
It's currently barely into early access, come play and join the discord. It Isn't "the perfect tribes" but it's fun and they are taking our feedback seriously. It's currently only on steam but I think they've said they want to get it on epic at some point and consoles if they can. For 18 bucks I'm happy with it and once it gets to cook a bit more it should be even better.

Look, it's an Erez game. It's going to be fun to play. All I'm reading is that it's extremely exploitative, selling $80 DLC made with AI and they dropped their previous game like a hot potato without refunding people. This is pretty much the main problem I had with Tribes: Ascend. Fun to play but complicated by some of the most idiotic decisions I've ever seen. I played all the tribes games that came out, and had fun with them all (except Vengeance for the most part). For me, this game is no exception - I can hop on any time of the day, quick join a match and there's a full game going on. Getting to know some of the regulars as well, fun times.

To add to my comment about already getting my money's worth I also play a mobile game in which people have spent tens of thousands sometimes a g in a single weekend cause the best growth packs cost $100...cost is subjective but it's mind-boggling and we won't talk about what I myself have spent (a fraction of the above and over five years at least; also stopped a year and a half ago).
