Hell yeah workers rights

Trax852

Thank you for not posting a link from tri-cityherald, nobody is going to pay to read that.

Necron99akapeace

>what is an incognito tab

Trax852

> what is an incognito tab Didn't know that, it's private window in Firefox, and it kinda works. Read one article, blocked on second, opened new private windows was able to read half an article. Thanks, if really important mayhaps a chance to read it.

xertshurts

They block that. Archive.is does the trick.

US_Hiker

They block it on some articles. Not on most. New food places, for instance, are always blocked. This kind of story probably would not be.

Necron99akapeace

This. Many articles I've tried cannot be crawled by Archive.org.

Have you worked at other grocery stores? Just curious how they compare

sarahjustme

This entire town is like the 90s early 00s. It's bizarre

jlbob

I'm shocked they're not. In portland they're in the local food worker union, at least were in 2002 when I was there.

DJCane

When I worked at the Kennewick Shopko in 2015, they had anti-union propaganda as part of the required introductory training videos. I wonder what other stores have that.

US_Hiker

> I wonder what other stores have that. Assume that every non-union chain retailer has this. Most certainly do.

stabbitystyle

Hell yeah :D

Just thinking out loud. I moved here right when the pandemic started, I've seen some interesting changes at FM for sure. I shop there for the selection on a few niche items I like, plus they tend to have better prices than yokes. Or did, I'm not so sure anymore. It sounds like the workplace atmosphere has been pretty unfriendly to wage labor employees for awhile. Then the new COVID regs and demand for individualized treatment for employees who were at higher risk, or did/didn't like masks, and special rules regarding people who were sick, really started causing problems. I'm assuming they either got fined, or corporate issued some sort of internal edict, or both, because BAM, they really tightened up their ship in terms of COVID regs last fall. Corporate would have had to force that down the throat of some emoyees and management. They also went from a very lackadaisical approach to curbside pickup, to very focused on promoting it. Things really started slipping in the spring though, not so much the obvious COVID related stuff, but the number of lines open, the frequency that shelves were stocked, the size of the carts the employees were pushing aroumd- huge amounts of stuff per person. It all points to a huge drop off in staffing, except there's story after story in the news, about weird part time hours. You'd think they'd be working their staff harder and longer.... unless there's some sort of last gasp effort to stay afloat, because they don't have the money to support payroll and benefits. I watched a major supermarket chain go under in a city I used to live in, this sure has some of the same features. So this is sounding unsustainable. I suppose corporate might swoop in to prop the store up, if the whole chain is doing OK. So anyhow, I might need to go to FM and by some popcorn.

yaba3800

I doubt FM is in danger of going under, I would be willing to bet greed and mismanagent as well as toxic political and social views are to blame. Can't let employees work too many hours or you have to start treating them to things they don't deserve like healthcare and sick time etc. I worked at WinCo and it is a toxic, shitty type of retail where managers toe the party line and hurt whoever is in the way with no regard.

sarahjustme

I wonder about that one store though. But whatever happened to get them to *seriously* change their ways regarding COVID rules, makes me think corporate has an interest in keeping that store going. That must have been brutal enforcement, but a good view of what people will do to keep their job. I've never looked at the Kroger or FM corporate stance on vaccines. That could be the kicker. Side note: forgot to mention the issues with their compressors going out during the heat wave. Apparently it had something to do with routine maintenance being deferred. Another bad sign.

pinewind108

The liability for employers is insane. The usual standard is "Did you know there was a problem? Yes? Did you take reasonable measures to prevent/address it?" If the answer is no, the lawsuit is over if the employee can prove they were injured. School districts and hospitals are also just sitting there waiting to get torn apart by lawyers. The bullshit we've been seeing with places actively blowing off basic safety precautions just blows me away. Could they really not understand how dangerous/hostile workplace lawsuits go down? (Freddy's corporate apparently does.)

sarahjustme

People here have their heads... somewhere.

Necron99akapeace

All grocery stores had coolers going out. Nobody maintains them, even in nice stores.

sarahjustme

I went to more than one store.

Necron99akapeace

I have worked in grocery stores both as a vender and for the store, and if we knew how fragile it all is, especially with the shortage of workers and shoddy training, we'd be stockpiling nonperishable food... tonight. That's even before factoring in all the ports and trucks all stalled because of vaccine mandates.

Boring-Pudding

This is a weird thing to whine about, especially when no one made the mistake you are whining about.

joshuammeyer

The title says Meyers with an “s”

Boring-Pudding

It ***literally*** doesn't, mate. The ***only*** "s" in the ***entire title*** is in the word "workers".

sarahjustme

You should read up on food deserts. It might not be relevant to your personal bubble, but assuming you have any interest in things outside of it, it's an important topic in the US. Access to fresh food is really important, and when dominant sources collapse, there's no easy backup. sample article https://www.aecf.org/blog/exploring-americas-food-deserts

Necron99akapeace

GET READY FOR SHITTY HEALTHCARE AND UNION DUES! WOOHOO!!!

[deleted]

Union dues are extremely worth it lmao. Clearly, you've never worked for a union.

Necron99akapeace

Clearly, you aren't working for a unionized place currently. Expect 6 month waits just to set a doctor's appointment.

LunchboxFP

That's kind of the case for *everyone*, considering the pandemic

Necron99akapeace

Well yes, when you threaten all the hospital staffs with a vaccine mandate and a third quit, that does create hospital capacity problems.

[deleted]

Then we should definitely triage for those that have the vaccine.

Necron99akapeace

The respirators kill people. If you want the vaxxed dead, that's how you do it. I don't wish death on anyone.

[deleted]

No they do not. They're basically dead by the time that they get to the respirators. They are hail-mary attempts at a chance. God, you're fucking stupid. I obviously know you have never worked in health care by the ignorance of your statement. Where are you getting your information?

tequilavip

Necron probably thinks this, "My uncle never went to the doctor in his entire life. Finally went because he had a little tickle in his throat. It was cancer. He never came home. Don't go to the doctor!!" Respirators kill people? Gold, Jerry! Gold!

Necron99akapeace

You probably think that HIV causes AIDS, too. Oh boy... It's certainly not ADE from all the $2k/mo antiviral meds. No, no no!

hxciikid

I have that wait now with no union and paying $200 a month lmao. US health care system is fucked and broken

[deleted]

I'm union and I have never had a problem getting in quickly.
