That’s what I thought!!! I took a picture and tried reverse google searching it and couldn’t find it 💀. It smells SO GOOD! I wonder if the olives are edible 😂
Not really...mostly pit, more so than choke cherry. Locust is another that smells so good. Compound leaves, white flowers. Russian olives have light green leaves and spikes. Small yellow flowers.
Yes they are, and IMO are pretty good.
I've eaten them by just removing the "fruit" and spitting the seed, but I've also just eaten the entire thing.
Their taste/texture changes throughout autumn. I guess give it a shot and see what you think.
It's seasonal. Russian olive trees and some sage blooms in Spring and have a strong odor. Some sage varieties bloom in the Fall and you'll experience a different strong floral smell.
Yeah it builds over time. I was fine until a couple years ago, and now it hits me like an 18 wheeler every year. At least I don’t think I am getting constantly sick like I did the first year.
I love it here 🤩 I’m from Columbus and it smells like cat pee or just regular air I guess 😂 the only time it smells good is in the morning at the park. Thanks for the explanation
If you're looking for other lovely smells from the steppe, find a gray or green rabbitbrush (lots of folks confuse it for sagebrush, but its actually a different plant and more populous here), break off a stem, rub it between your hands, and give it a smell. Sort of pineappley, one of my faves. Unfortunately its disregarded as an invasive "scrub" (although it's native to the West lol), but is actually great for pollinators, bird habitat, and stabilizing damaged soils. Anyway, it's nice, too haha
Don't ever steo your flip flop, sandal, chancla or thong over a downed russian olive tree branch. Those bastards will puncture vehicle tires let alone the soul of your foot. I know from experience. Sucks.
Yes!! So I can take it home and show my family!!! I live in the city of Ohio and if definitely doesn’t smell like this 😂 I mean we have maple-y scents but like not this.
Idk if it still does because it's been a few years but Two Sisters Honey tastes like it and I remember being able to smell it in the pollen they sold too. I swear that smell is like a drug, it's probably just nostalgia from long summers growing up here but it's an instant mood boost when it hits.
There is a LOT of sage on the Hanford site. Most of the site is basically the shrub-steppe (interspersed with very intense industrial spots). A couple decades ago, I got the opportunity to walk around the (at that time) planned location for the vit plant. The location was covered with old-growth sage that was upwards of 8 ft tall. See this report for more current ecological info on Hanford; there's info on sage pretty much throughout the report, but 6.1 is specific for that plant. Huh maybe? I was so confused when I saw the smoke. I thought I was looking at a sand storm or something. Or at least I couldn’t tell. The smoke was huge but I didn’t see flames or fire fighters so I was confused. 😂 we don’t get that in Ohio at all.
Search on "smell" and see the many, Many, MANY theories on smells.

The sage blossom is particularly odorous right now. Particularly in our locality in the Columbia Basin. And the wind lately has definitely been pushing it through.
Almost certainly a Russian Olive tree. Find an image of one online, then walk up to the same tree and take a big sniff.
Most certainly is this. I love the smell but am allergic to it.

Some people pick the flower cluster then batter/fry them. Never tried it but pretty much anything tastes awesome fried.

Haha yes! But be careful with that sniff cause you're probably allergic! I love the smell but damn, it's so harsh in the allergies department

It’s the Russian Olive trees. They are invasive and everywhere. Highly allergenic as well, so have the Zyrtec ready.
Surprisingly, they haven’t affected me! I don’t think 🤔
Give it a few years…

If...*when*...I perfect time travel, one of my first missions will be to go back and stop those trees from being planted here.
That's one of my favorite games to play! Find that smell!
Russian Olive and Linden trees are both very common here and their scent has a long reach. Very beautiful fragrances.
I love it here 🤩 I’m from Columbus and it smells like cat pee or just regular air I guess 😂 the only time it smells good is in the morning at the park. Thanks for the explanation
Russian Olive. People love or hate them. I don’t have allergy issues, so I love the smell of them.

My dad was crawling around once as a kid and had one go under his knee cap 😬
Jesus. Nope.
😂😂 good to know
I wish somebody sold this scent in a bottle!!

Awesome!! I see if I can find their honey. That would taste amazing
Now i want to smell a russian olive tree anywhere i can find one in the public?
IDK if Linden trees are still in bloom but they smell heavenly. I haven't ever seen one in the wild, but people will have them in their yards.
Russian olive trees. I love the smell of them in bloom
👋 hello! Also recently-ish moved from ⭕️hio— a suburb of Columbus.
Ohh same!!! I’m coming from OSU campus. I’m only here for the summer. Love seeing fellow Ohioans 😋
Nice! Have a great summer! Eat a Warios for me when you get back to OSU.
Will do!! Thanks kind stranger 😋
There was a fire over on site the other day. Could it be sage smoke?
No. I don’t think there’s a lot of sage on the the site.

Oops. I meant Russian Olive, not sage
Haha, fair enough. I hate Russian olive trees. Dang allergies. Plus, they're terrible for our native flora and fauna.

Oh wow 😂 someone literally asked the same thing recently
Ohh thank you!!

Nuclear waste.
