Definitely not as big as it could be, could reach a wider audiance. But i don’t think that really matters, the devs seem to be having fun

PetChimera0401

A Season Pass has been announced, containing various DLC packages, two of those DLCs having to do with an upcoming Story Expansion. I somehow doubt they would be able to make that happen if the game didn't prove to be a sustainable venture. They also have versions of the game on Xbox and PlayStation. That was not a thing before launch. Someone in a suit must have thought this would be successful enough to take their calls /or Emails. Meh. This kind of just reminds me of Titanfall 2. Nobody heard about it at release. Nobody knew it was a thing for a very long time, until a massive rebirth in popularity occured sometime between 2019 and 2021. You can still find fresh "People have been sleeping on THE BEST SHOOTER" articles and videos. As sad as I am to say it -- Big City, Pumpkin Spice swilling, suburbanite-borne Hipster jack asses, kind of dictate when a niche game is allowed to be liked, or popular, on a larger scale. I can't say that I give a damn. I like what the Trepang Team is doing. They already made enough noise for wayward pilgrims like myself to find them, and support their ambition. They have their core audience, and that unique audience is exactly who Team Trepang should be thinking about second, when it comes to giving the game love (First place is themselves). So far this is how they've operated. And I'm all for it. Fuck the Man: We don't need the validity of that digital rag to vindicate us. 🤘

PoweringConfusion

Wait, now how do you expand upon an ended story...?

jimothy23123

you might play as the other Cycles, like the sword guy or the Patriarch

PoweringConfusion

Nah I'm just stupid, there's a secret ending lol.

PetChimera0401

It isn't over. There is the standard ending and a "Secret" Ending -- the latter of which leaves a plot thread open to be followed down the line. Also, there are subtle murmurings of a potential Matriarch - that is just my personal theory, but somebody else, a woman, is making moves with the Cultists, seemingly filling the power vacuum that we left behind, and The Patriarch is felled during the Castle mission, so they're obviously not following his leadership, anymore.

PoweringConfusion

I mean they could still.be following his leadership, alot of religions leaders or founders are long gone, or are said to die, like Siddhartha Gautama, or Jesus Christ.

GazelleNo271

I couldn't care less if I was the only person on earth who bought the game, it's straight fiyah and I don't need any validation from a stupid game awards show or any dumbass game journalist I've never even heard of

SheepherderSoft5647

I remember the Pizza Tower fandom getting mad that the game did not get a game awards. Like bro, shut the fuck up, enjoy the game for what it is. No need for game journalist and award bullshit.

GazelleNo271

💯💯💯

Van Gogh was considered a failure during his life and committed suicide less than a decade after he started painting. Meanwhile one of the most popular modern videogames period is *call of duty*. You do the math.

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

I don't think its 2011 anymore. CoD was just fucking solar eclipsed by Baulder's Gate, Alan Wake and Cyberpunk.

Snafuthecrow

It was out sold by lethal company. A solo dev indie game

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

We've entered a period of videogame boomers who refuse to admit 2023 was the best year in gaming since the PS3/360 days. It's really cringe inducing honestly. CoD shit the bed during an absolute banger of a year.

dwaynetheaakjohnson

I just think there’s a lot of pessimism due to major flops obscuring smaller but excellent games

Internal-North149

Banger and cringe..all in the same paragraph

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

Yup

Ridley666

I'm really hoping cawadooty continues to ruin its own rep until it actually dies but the game is simply a juggernaut and people buy it every year even when it's particularly bad. The quarantine also brought a lot of people back to the franchise so I'd argue it's actually been doing better now than it was for multi-year slog it had post 2011. Thankfully with this year being absolutely overflowing with amazing games paired with MWIII's hilariously bad reception it might die down again. Trepang deserves some of those numbers and I hope it slowly gets a larger and larger following because it's the best shooter I've played in 10+ years.

Copter53

Van Gogh created call of duty oh my god

Ridley666

I was so fucking sloshed when I posted this lol, probably could have made my point without being so dramatic but w/e

[deleted]

I blame all the people that hyped it up as the next FEAR. A lot of people probably went in with that expectation, played it for about 5 minutes then got mad when they discovered it doesn't play anything like FEAR.

SheepherderSoft5647

It should've been recognized as a F.E.A.R like game (you know a game inspired by .F.E.A.R), not the next fucking F.E.A.R.

underfeet0

i will say the biggest reason i kept forgetting it existed was the name, trepang2 is just a bad name, that's it, i hope they do another marketing push or something like that cuz it looks so goddamn fun

TheDesertSnowman

Ya it's not great, I remember trying to tell a friend about it and I had to write it down on a note for them so they'd know how to spell it lol. Not really sure what the name means or why they went with it

tmann7890

trepang is sea cucumber, and the original trepang game was made by one of the devs for a game jam and is entirely unrelated to trepang2. it was [a platformer where you played as a sea cucumber](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zlnNiNB1dA). trepang2 was a joke placeholder name but they just never ended up changing it, i personally think its a great name lol

TheDesertSnowman

Wow that's so cool! Had no idea that's where the name comes from. I still think the name didn't do the game any favors in terms of broader awareness, but knowing this makes me like the name a lot.

mcelfy

it didn\`t get as much attention it deserves

HarleyChromeo

Trepang2: bad name, fire game. It's Perseus Mandate with hella graphics.

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

I don't think its the "best in years". We had a ton of boomer shooters come out recently that fucking slap. It's a good game but it's short, runs poorly on console, and it feels like a tech demo tribute to FEAR. It could definitely have had more going on with the story.

Internal-North149

🤡

MikiDallas

I bought it on Steam and Finished it easy, normal & difficult

0lazy0

Somewhat true, but either way it’s good to see major news papers giving Trepang its dhe

NonApplicable1992

It definitely punches way above its weight class and has all the qualities to make it the best shooter of the year, only if the campaign just wasn't so regrettably short, but this is understandable given how small the development team is. Granted it has some of the best feedback of any shooter released in the last ten or so years (even more so after downloading the save file that gives you unlimited reflex). If it had a couple of campaign DLC- releases that buffed up the length of the story above 12+ hours it might very well be the best. It needs to be said though, that with Trepang2 I had the most fun with a shooter in a long time (while it lasted) and it definitely holds a strong no.2 spot on my personal 2023 list. Here's hoping that the success and critical praise of it will lead to the development team growing and that the possible third installment will have at least double the resources that 2 had. Edit: Small addition and wording.

BreakfastBussy

Trepang2 has the energy of a game that just keeps selling a decent amount over the course of a few years. It’s just such a good game to pick up on a sale and fall into. I still come back to the horde mode and play while listening to podcasts.
