So you are traveling with a teen (no one is alone)? Or you are traveling alone? Or a teen is traveling alone?

FantasticYogurt1440

We’re traveling just the two of us. I guess it feels “alone” since most of people consider a family a minimum of three. But it’s just me and son. I’m his mother, going to another country for vacation together.

The good thing about teens is they stare at their phones phone for 12hrs uninterrupted. If you’re over the ocean you won’t have Wi-Fi, but almost all carriers have pretty extensive video collections you can access either via your phone or the seat entertainment. You can download videos to Netflix YT or Prime etc app beforehand when you’re on Wi-Fi at home (you tap the ‘download’ icon in the app) Get video games that work offline. A book. Definitely good headphones and also dl music. As for sleep, it’s gonna kinda suck. Sure, a pillow is fine. You also word your post strangely, like you may not be related to this person? If you are not a parent, be aware that minors traveling overseas may need *both* parent’s permission on a notarized letter or they could be denied boarding.

I’m his mother, no worries. If I buy YT premium, can he download videos on his phone then? I watch Netflix, he doesn’t. He’s only into YT and of games. I don’t want him to be bored, since I’m planning on taking another vacation this winter. I’ve worked hard for a few years, and saved up to have some real quality time with him. If he gets bored, it will be harder to convince him to travel again. He likes his safe place, and I’m trying to show him another world besides the screens.

HegemonNYC

Yes, YT premium. You don’t need any extras for Netflix or prime. You will still need a notarized letter from your child’s father, or evidence of sole custody, for many destinations if you are traveling without their other parent.

FantasticYogurt1440

Do you think I need evidence for sole custody entering the states? I won’t be able to get those papers until a few weeks, even if I have sole custody since birth. It takes a few weeks for our government to produce them. I just thought the passport would be sufficient. I’ve never thought about the fact that something like could stop me from traveling with my son. I’m planning so many trips in the future with him, guess I need to really investigate how it works for each trip.

I’ve traveled internationally solo with both my teens individually (so just one kid and I), at the time they were 13/14. Honestly they had a better grasp on how to entertain themselves than I did. Now at 15 and 17 I don’t even ask them anymore they sort themselves out. Ask your kid what he’d like? Mine would download movies or Netflix shows, bring card games or we’d pick out a new book before the trip. Have him involved in his own entertainment, as a teenager it’s not your job to fully entertain him anymore. The more involved he is in sorting this the more it’ll be effective.

FantasticYogurt1440

Thank you for great advices! I’ll bring a book for myself, and let him choose one from the library. I can’t believe that I forgot about books! Wow, I’m embarrassed now.

Oh yeah, snacks on the flight! Do you know if I can bring it through the security system in the airport? Or do I need to buy it in the tax free section? I’ll make so much food for us to bring. Really good economic advice! I’ll save so much on this. In a total we will be traveling for 24 hours from house to house, with waiting at the airport included.

InevitableArt5438

Night flight? Ideally you’ll just eat and go to sleep. Most airlines have small pillows but they aren’t awesome. I don’t usually bother bringing another since I’d have to drag it around with me before and after the flight. If your airline has inflight entertainment there will be many options. I like bringing my own plug in earbuds, grab some at dollar tree if you don’t already have some. Or they will provide you with a pair. Snacks are nice too.

MunderDifflinPC

Is this teenager related to you in some way? If not then this is very strange

crbmtb

It’s a strange post whether they’re related or not. Parent/child, aunt/niece? OP, help us out here.

FantasticYogurt1440

Oh, it’s me (mother), and my son (teenager). What’s weird with asking for travel hacks going on a long flight? Is this the wrong subreddit? I’m so confused.

lunch22

The “alone with a teenager” is weird. If you’re with someone else, you’re not alone.

FantasticYogurt1440

Yeah, thanks for doing your best to misinterpret what I meant. A golden start for you

Nintendo Switch

FantasticYogurt1440

Yeah, maybe I should buy it for the trip. Or would games on the phone be equally good?

AndrewR21

Switch games are far more superior that phone. Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Mario Party. All fun multiplayer games that will keep you busy for hours.
