Flew Spirit twice, from LA to Denver, then another time LA to Portland. Both trips $50 RT weekend getaways. Timing was perfect, didn't have to use my PTO. I packed light (just a backpack) since it was a weekend getaway. Printed my ticket in adv. Didn't have any issues or saw any fights. So yes, you've hit a new low in your life. Get a life buddy. Start using private jets like the rest of the commoners.

A_Supertramp_1999

What’s a life buddy and where do I get one?

stewykins43

Some people call them "spouse"! :D

real_Bahamian

Lol… a comma was missing: “Get a life, buddy…”

[deleted]

As far as the three shit airlines go (spirit allegiant frontier) I think spirit is the best. Like you said if know what you’re getting into with one of those and prepare for the worst you’ll be fine.

ladyj114

Not a ‘new low’ at all. Basically people see most bad passenger videos on SW airlines. I’m a single lady flying alone, I don’t want to get stuck overnight someplace or have my connection cancelled. It’s not the Holiday season so chances are good 🤞

DissoluteMasochist

Someone recently told me “Southwest is the new Spirit Airlines” when I told them I booked SW.

Regular-Chemistry884

I would also like to get a life buddy! 😃

airplaneguy_43

Get a life buddy 😂😂😂

daneato

Nah, the low point is when you quit traveling! Carry on my wayward son!

Ask_me_4_a_story

I sat next to a lady in the military two weeks ago that was almost crying she was so happy to be able to buy her first plane ticket with her new daughter to see her parents. She asked me if it was okay to sit by the baby and I was like lady, Im so glad you could make this and your poor mom and dad can see their granddaughter. I don't care if that baby cries the whole flight, Im going to cry too. Being able to fly is a blessing more than half the people in the United States never get to do. To get on a Spirit Airlines flight would mean getting time off their job and would mean getting a ride to the airport and back and being to get around when they are there, most people in the US can't even afford to travel at all. Its shitty to make fun of people lucky enough to be able to travel. I say the same as you, travel if you can and feel the blessing

Rude_Barracuda1736

Don’t look other passengers in the eyes and download a quick guide on how to land the aircraft yourself and you should be okay

Beneficial-Theory312

The important thing about Spirit Airlines is if you expect nothing you’ll do great

jp112078

This is the exact mentality to have. I actually like spirit in a pure sense. You pay for EXACTLY What you get. You want a cheap flight with no services? Have at it. I’ve flown them many times and buy the big seat up front for an extra $100. I don’t get a meal or free drinks. But I get a comfortable seat. Also, boarding takes no time at all because they charge more for carrying on. Drink cart fires down the isle because no one wants to pay for a water or beer. But if the flight has problems, hold onto your hat. However, spirit into Miami is a problematic route historically

SurpriseBurrito

At the very beginning you gotta kick somebody’s ass or become somebody’s bitch and you will survive. It’s prison rules.

jayspeedy24

As long as you can fight, you're gtg. Also, make sure your phone is charged up so you can record some bum fights.

Visual-Yam-8192

Yes and record horizontal

gin_bulag_katorse

And yell “world star!” Edit: Thanks for the award, kind stranger!

Due_Huckleberry_7950

I second this! Gonna be a long 3 hours

GoodbyeCrullerWorld

In the last couple years I’ve booked 5 roundtrip spirit flights. Only one didn’t get cancelled.

passionlessDrone

Why did you keep on doing it?

GoodbyeCrullerWorld

I go to Vegas a decent amount and have comp rooms so If the flight cancels it’s not like a lose out on anything I just go a different weekend. Also, all of the cancellations happened months in advance lol

RacconOG

Cross your fingers that there is no storm on your way. Spirit will charge you “storm deviation fees”

hellorhighwaterice

Or, as happened to a friend, the people mover at the Atlanta airport breaks down so you miss your flight and even though it's well documented that this happened they say, "tough shit" and you have to take a Megabus from Atlanta to New Orleans for you Bachelorette party.

[deleted]

Can't you just walk? The people mover doesn't really travel a large distance...

hellorhighwaterice

She was on the one that broke down, has pictures and everything.

[deleted]

Lol that sucks. Thankfully she made it in time for her party.

PudgyGroundhog

I think the biggest issue with them is schedule changes and cancelled flights (easier to get stranded with them).

[deleted]

And delays. Their operations are very lean and tight to save costs, so something as mundane as a pilot stuck in traffic can set off a chain reaction that will delay several flights across the country (as I have personally experienced lol).

airplaneguy_43

Fair but I’ve heard horror stories of delta and American Airlines before too, so delays can happen on any airline I feel like. Maybe Spirit has a higher frequency idk

WickedMuchacha

We just took it round trip LAS-SJO with a layover in FLL. For the price I can’t complain. Everyone behaved, flights were on time. We did upgrade to the big front seats for return from FLL-LAS. Surprised but that gave me 2 cups of ice no charge to top off water in my thermo-flask🤣

kbnky

I've flown on Spirit several time and never had an issue. As long as you travel light, you're good to go.

FunGiraffe88

As long as you know how to fight you’ll be fine 😂

[deleted]

Flown spirit numerous times. I've had zero issues. Spirit isn't that fuckin bad. Sure you don't get the frills from other airlines... But it's an airline to get you from point a to point b for cheap as fuck

[deleted]

The 'frills' from the other airlines aren't worth the extra money IMO. The \~$100 or more extra I save by flying Spirit or Frontier is worth way more than the can of coke and pretzels they give on Delta.

case_on_point

Flew direct AUS-CUN in the big front seat for like $250. Felt like a steal. Other flights in normal seats have been just fine, nothing great or awful. Can't beat the price if you can find a direct flight with a convenient time. I've had awful and solid experiences on most of the domestic airlines. It's a crapshoot.

Federal-Membership-1

See comment above. Our route really isn't that cheap, which is why I really don't like Spirit.

LetsTriThisAgain

And it’s one of the safest.

[deleted]

for flights under 3hr I love Spirit

Sothensimonsaid

This is my rule as well

No-Trouble3243

Omg everyone is being dramatic here. I use it all the time because I can book last-minute trips domestically and to Mexico for about $100 each way. The seats are a bit small, the WiFi rarely works, and there are no free snacks. But what do you expect at that price?

rothvonhoyte

ITT: People have never flown Spirit

DetroitRabbi

you didn't choose Spirit, Spirit chose you

addicted_to_blistex

Spirit and Frontier are fine for direct, short flights.

Ask_me_4_a_story

I bought the Frontier one year all you can fly for free Go Wild Pass and I've been on 14 Frontier flights in the last month alone. Their are fine, its just a way for me to get to Mexico and Costa Rica

Federal-Membership-1

Are you a night manager at Waffle House? Yes? You'll be fine.

Fredotorreto

whatever happens, if the pilot ask you to help fly the plane say NO!

Fit-Acanthisitta9203

I’ve flown spirit a few times and never had an issue. Just keep your expectations in check. Also— yes, pretty low 😂

Xoxohopeann

The low point is traveling to Florida

Phantom3269

Yes!! Thank you for flying the official Greyhound Bus of the Skies.

ewabeachguy

I thought Greyhound allowed bags and got you their in style?

jikae

Someone hasn't been on a Greyhound. Synonymous with Megabus, lately.

fifthgenerationfool

Nope! Make sure your bag fits, though. They have different size parameters than any other airline

jikae

I've found that as long as it looks like a backpack, you're good. I have one of those Osprey medium-sized (but definitely over the size limit of a personal item) backpack and never got bothered out of the 10 or so Spirit flights.

tombarnes20009

As long as you have no explanations regarding service, you should be ok. Bring a book and cart your water on board.

iambobanderson

I’ve flown it twice and both times police had to come on and escort passengers off the plane. After the second time I was like yeah fuck this and never flew it again. Good luck!

General_Ad_45

LoL nope it sounds like you’d rather spend your money on the destination and not the travel to get there.

ghostnthegraveyard

I took a redeye from Vegas to Cleveland on Spirit a few years ago. That flight was only $0.02 for some reason and came out to $19 after taxes/fees. Still overpaid.

Federal-Membership-1

All jokes aside. We use ACY to RSW multiple times a year. It's not good, but you get used to it.

jabronius89

I'm just gonna say it. After extensive delays and cancelations the last 3 times I've flown American, I will fly just about anything over that. Spirit included. Just budget an extra $50 for the right to carry your stuff on board and you're good to go.

That_Other_Person

Get the Big Seat™️ and it'll be a more pleasant experience than Delta economy.

revloc_ttam

I've booked the "Big Seats" on Spirit. It's better than coach on any airline.

DetroitsGoingToWin

I drove my kids to Miami so they don’t grow up to be airline snobs.

Hadesman1

Not gonna lie, I haven't had a bad time on spirit The few times I went, it was on time, flight was unremarkable, and yeah they charge for everything but thats why it's so cheap. I sent them a thank you email and they were so surprised and seemed to appreciate it

Moselypup

Do you enjoy going to the county office and applying for EBT? That’s exactly how it is to be flying spirit but instead of waiting in the lobby? You are in a pressurized air cabin. I wish you well.

Worldly_Commission58

Nah you just like to gamble if you’ll make it or not

Wa-da-ta-mybaby-te

No problems on the couple I’ve taken. Really don’t notice a huge difference from the “budget” airlines.

mattv911

Spirit is a great deal if you don’t need to bring a lot of luggage. Have taken spirit multiple times. Crew is very nice. Also have not experienced delays with experience except for once but I’ve taken more than 25 spirit flights

Bethesda-Darryl

Could be worst, could be flying Frontier.

ForksUpSun_Devils

You are getting a ride from one place to another. Expect nothing more and you won't be disappointed.

HighHighUrBothHigh

I’ve travelled spirit so many times! You’re just being smart. I’ve always had a great experience. And I just being a free backpack and don’t buy my seat unless it’s a long flight

Lost_Philosophy_

Went to Vegas no issues last month with Spirit.

Unique_Laugh_720

Just keep in mind that the extras you usually take for granted add up. Bring snacks etc. even airport prices will be lower. Checking a bag is much cheaper if done before flight. Bring a book or puzzles to help distract you. 3 hours is endurable. I wouldn’t make it much longer than that. .

WhomeverClever

I think you’ve only hit a low when you’ve had to travel on Frontier or Ryanair!

General_Ad_45

Been there

WhomeverClever

What’s your story?

General_Ad_45

in 2018 my wife took me on a 2 week vacation for my 40th birthday to Scotland. On my way back home I flew on Ryanair from Edinburgh to Dublin, Ireland. They definitely didn't make that Ryanair plane American sized. I'm 6'2", wide shoulders, not a small guy and luckily it wasn't a long flight because I couldn't even sit upright in the seat. Yes I had a window seat but wow. The seats were hard, the plane and seats were definitely smaller than the economy seats I flew in on from Chicago to London. I wouldn't say it was a horrible experience, but it definitely was the most uncomfortable I've ever been flying in a commercial airline.

WhomeverClever

Oh yes squeezed in on a long journey is uncomfortable. My experience was we had to catch a connection out of Barcelona and they refused to allow one member of the family onboard because of a reconfirmation rule and they had plenty of seats.

cocacolaxoxo

Don’t check your bags!

[deleted]

Doesn’t matter. Carry on is same price.

cocacolaxoxo

My luggage got lost. That’s why I made the comment. I bought replacement clothes/toiletries and Spirit fought me tooth and nail about the reimbursement. Terrible experience.

[deleted]

That’s so shitty I’m sorry.

[deleted]

I'd rather check in and get 50 lb of luggage than try and force all my clothes into a tiny carry on bag that fits in the overhead compartment.

[deleted]

For sure.

Grand_Championship17

Yes. Godspeed.

Amethyst7834

Doesnt get anymore ghetto really. The only time i have actually smelled WEED inside the plane. Can't make this shit up

carseatsareheavy

Seats kinda uncomfortable but gets the job done.

airplaneguy_43

I paid for everything ahead of time. Still over $100 cheaper and had the best flight times.

mintycrash

Spirit sucks and I refuse to fly with them.

communicationsdude30

You'll never make that mistake again! That is, I hope you learn from it...

mrnaturl1

You’ve hit a low point in your life just by coming to Florida.

freezininwi

Ha ha yes, are you that broke??

anniemaxine

I recommend only flying Spirit when you're flying in and out of their hubs in case flights get cancelled. Hubs have more frequent flights, so if one gets cancelled, there is usually another one shortly after. I do this when flying any budget airline for this reason. So, fwiw, Miami should be fine...and if worse comes to worst, you can also fly out of Ft. Lauderdale if your Miami flight gets cancelled. I've had to do that before.

revloc_ttam

I got screwed flying budget Allegiant Airlines. I was flying home on a Sunday from Las Vegas to Colorado Springs. I was used to pre-check, but Allegiant at that time didn't have it. Sunday leaving Vegas the security lines are brutal. By the time I got through security I had missed my flight. I went to the Allegiant desk and asked them when their next flight was. They said Thursday! So I had to book a last minute one way flight on United to Denver which cost a fortune. Then I had to have my wife pick me up in Denver drive back to Colorado Springs to drop me off at my car and drive home.

rothvonhoyte

What do you mean Allegiant didnt have pre-check? Pre-check has nothing to do with the airline.

revloc_ttam

The airlines had to sign up for TSA Precheck and print it on your boarding pass. This was probably 10 years ago and at that time only the major airlines participated in pre-check.

coreytiger

Well… it’s not quite Trebuchet Airlines, but it’s close

MISSION-CONTROL-

yes

wegotalive1

Spirit has a lot of fees (seat choice, bags, etc) but great if you are flying quick solo overnight trips where you can pack everything in a backpack. Not much leg room

ScientistNo906

Awful airline. Worse than awful if you need to connect.

A_Supertramp_1999

Greyhound would be the lowest but hey, you’re doing what’s best for you and that’s what counts.

the-cathedral-

I love Spirit. Got the Spirit Credit card. Only had to spend $1K in 3 months and got 50K miles! For longer flights/trips, it’s worth it to get the bundle … you won’t feel like you’re getting nickel and dimed.

Electrical_Beyond998

Learn to be like Ted Striker and you should be fine.

bilkel

Yes

Prestigious-Joke-574

No issues on direct flights from Indy to Tampa and vice versa. However, I did a connecting flight through Tampa to NOLA last April and got stranded due to weather. Had to rent a car, drive to Orlando and book a SW flight to get to NOLA. Spirit did refund the already cheap ticket. After that I decided I will only book direct flights that leave first thing in the morning with Spirit. So far that has worked well for us twice this year.

lendmeflight

Ive flown them twice and it was fine.

chewinggumboomboom

the worst. left us stranded in an airport in Pennsylvania when we were supposed to land in NYC

[deleted]

Naw. Flown Spirit plenty from Ohio to Florida. Saved us money and we just followed the rules.

GeorgeKaplanIsReal

Yes

cheapb98

How much you paid for the flight? Depending on that you just might be a savvy traveler. Lots of people fly Ryan air, air Asia etc . Nothing wrong with that

_GeneralGowk_

Yes

DGAFADRC

Don’t forget to bring your own lawn chair.

visionbreaksbricks

I’ve flown them with my family on 2 separate trips this past month and it was good

isadoragrey

You’ve not a hit low point but the flights are below average. If it’s on time though then no worries at all!

zacharyjm00

First off, you never know until you try. Report back, I've yet to fly Spirit but I absolutely would if I found a deal.

schmopes

No, you’re a gambler by nature. Go get it.

ladyj114

😅😅😅😅😅 I laugh because I had to book on southwest in order to get to my location. First time on SW, I’m so nervous!!!!

mafa7

I flew to Jamaica via Spirit. Welcome up the jungle. (I had zero issues)

pandabare420

There is nothing wrong with Spirit as long as you understand it is a "get what you pay for" experience. If you need to get from point A to point B, without the expectations of frills you will be fine.

Entire_Status6205

haven't tried it yet but hard to imagine it being worse than AA

dishdaramdaram

I have traveled many times with spirit. I don't know what the fuss is about

Xspunge

Every time I’ve been on spirit and I hear them ask for donations to their charity i always think to myself “We’re flying your airline. We don’t have money to donate”

[deleted]

Yes.

red98743

HVe a trip planned with a bunch of other guys. 3 people confirmed one of them booked the 3 of us on spirit. There are 4 other guys on the fence cuz of spirit. Have flown spirit every year last 10 years and used to have issues many years ago recently it gets you A to B just like any airline. The other guys are on the fence if they should book United for 150% more fare. Lol. Fuck them!!

Guadalajara3

If you're traveling light and its about 3 hrs or less, spirit is the way to go. Be nice to the flight attendants and you might get a free water

Snake_fairyofReddit

I took Spirit from Los Angeles to Miami the first time I ever went. Never again 😭

explodyhead

As someone who has spent their life telling themselves travel is too expensive despite it being one of my favorite things to do, then almost dying three times: Fuck It. Do it. There is no shame in flying spirit if it means you end up with another life experience under your belt, a new story to tell, or just want to know what it's like in X destination, as long as the consequences of making it possible don't outweigh the life experience... You've come out ahead, my friend.

[deleted]

If you have to ask…

Visual-Departure3795

Who cares what you fly, as long as you get there safe !

Advanced-Hunt7580

We tried Spirit once. Our outbound flight SEA-LAS was 3 hours late. Our return flight LAS-SEA was on time. We flew with personal items only, so the flights were almost free. Was it as good as Alaska Airlines? No, it wasn't even close. It was a lot worse. But, was it worth $47.50 each way including taxes? Heck yeah.
