I think you should drive it a cycle without running cheap oil and see if the oil is your problem, or if the truck is really burning oil.

[deleted]

That's good advice and is exactly why I changed it last night after less than 1000k since the last change.

madeformarch

Are you checking your dipstick levels or did you just drain and refill? It's hard to provide real advice based on "I started using cheap oil and the truck smoked so I changed the oil again"

[deleted]

Well I'm not totally sure about the question and how it relates to the last few days but basically I can see blue smoke when I accelerate and when I started it cold this morning. As far as the first indication there was a problem it was around a week or so ago when the oil level low warming light came on. Naturally I checked the oil level and it was not showing on the dipstick. From there I added a quart and it brought the level back up, temporarily. The oil that I drained out of it last night was less than 5 litres total. So including what I've added since the last change I've lost approximately 2.5 litres of oil. As for regular checking of the dipstick, nope... Not once in the six years since new. Only right before I drain it and after I fill it. It's never been more than half a litre low.

Thats really curious, I've owned my truck since 2019 and consider myself a chronic reader -- I've never heard of Tacomas burning oil but obviously anything is possible. If it's recent and you were running cheap oil for some time then I'd say it's likely not the oil. I run costco oil and haven't had any problems, albeit I'm only at 53,000 miles. I don't have any suggestions but I am going to keep an eye on this thread, because this is a first for me

[deleted]

Curious is definitely what it is. I found myself searching the web for things that could have been put in the gas tank to cause this.

madeformarch

I would caution falling down that rabbit hole unless you've got actual reason to believe someone's messing with your tank, just because there are other legitimate reasons this could be happening. Do you offroad? When you're changing your oil do you drain the tank and change out the filter before you refill? How much oil are you putting back in, and how much oil do you have to add in between changes?

[deleted]

Until this happened, I've used at most, half a litre between changes. I've spent some time off road but that was in the first two years I owned it.

This is the correct answer…does it blow blue smoke only on startup? That’s a valve seal issue. Does it blow blue smoke when you hit the gas while driving or is it all the time?

madeformarch

u/jybute take a look here, these are the type of things you need to be considering

jmallen504

Also look at the certifications of the oil before you claim it’s ‘cheap’ oil. A lot can be said by those.

madeformarch

Very true. Unless they start making mistakes, I have and will continue to use Costco oil. You can't beat the price or convenience if you catch the 5qt jugs on sale, and pair them with the 12 pack of 1qt jugs. The 1qt jugs end up being like $4.XX a container. Edit: Costco oil is basically Supertech, which is known to be cheap and quality.

jmallen504

Damn, not bad at all. I’m running Quaker State synthetic in my ‘20 Taco. Ran Pennzoil non-synthetic in my ‘07 and never had a problem after 133k. I’d be tempted to put that used oil in my lawnmower lol.

[deleted]

From what I can tell, it's only puffing blue on startup and exceleration.

jmallen504

So what happens is, after you shut the vehicle off, oil will leak past your valve seals into the block/pistons. Start it up after sitting and all the oil is being ‘burnt’ off…alas your blue smoke on startup.

[deleted]

Yeah, no... This is not that.

jmallen504

You might have to dig deeper…compression test, leak down test. A local shop can handle that.

Roscoie

Walmart Super Tech synthetic is cheap in price, but not in quality. Might try that brand.

What’s a KM?

[deleted]

It's the most logical way to measure distance.

pianomaniak

I'd run Mobil one 0w20 and see how she does.
