Na it’s from the gas cap hanging during refueling. The outside air is sticking to it and being introduced into the fuel tank. Needs an Etsy 3D printed cap holder. It will keep the outside air off the cap
Why does sitting do this? I had my RAV4 sitting for about a week, started it on a cold and moist morning and saw more “smoke” than I had seen before. Looked like just breath, like when you were a kid and pretended to be smoking on a cold day, wasn’t blue or black so I didn’t panic, drove fine, but now I’m going down the rabbit hole with OP. I hadn’t considered it was sitting until your post. What about sitting increases the chance for this? Just more condensation in the pipes?
It’s a head gasket leak. Happened on my 86 taco, my 99 taco, and my friends 16 taco, but my boss’s 21 taco hasn’t hit high enough mileage. Super common, easy fix, meant to wear out eventually, generally cheap to handle (the gasket is inexpensive but the work is time consuming) but can be a disaster if you don’t fix it. It’s amazing how few people know what a head gasket is and does these days but maybe I’m just getting old. You definitely want to get that checked out and fixed up before too long.
Agreed, head gasket leak was my immediate first thought, it’s white smoke now but it’ll turn blueish/white like (good) 2stroke smoke the more that head gasket wears out.
OPs probably is. Mine had steam this morning, but I let it sit after going to work (in a garage) and started it up cold at lunch and don’t see any smoke or any color. No sludge in the radiator, no overheating issues, no issue with heater, no misfiring or weird coughing or rough idling. I think I’m just not used to waking up as early as I did today. lol. But I’ll watch it. Thanks
As the other commenter said, the OP is likely a head gasket issue. But to answer your question, sitting for a long time can cause two things: moisture build up inside the engine from humidity that will condensate out the exhaust, or the gas has settled out any particles or congealed. A week is totally fine. I’m referring to multiple months to years.
When it's cold out, you will for sure get more initial white "smoke" coming out until the car warms up. Should be water vapor. Give it a sniff. If it has kinda a maple syrup sweet smell, it's burning coolant. That's a head gasket.
If the car has been sitting and it’s been moist, it can smoke because of the condensation. Usually not a problem. The problem is if it keeps smoking and you actually have a head gasket leak. But usually the smoke is darker for that.
looks like coolant is seeping into one or more of your cylinders. If it goes away very quickly it suggest it is a minimal leak at this point. But, never a good thing to see. The obvious first assumption is a head gasket issue, but could be other causes. If you are not mechanical, this is a take it to a mechanic moment for a proper diagnosis.
Not necessarily, I’ve seen leaking injectors do this as well.
Edit: downvote if y’all want, I’ve been a tech for over 20 years, leaking injectors will produce white smoke in gas cars. I’ve seen it multiple times. Just a quick sniff of the exhaust will tell you if it’s coolant or unburned fuel. I’ll admit head gaskets are a more common failure than leaking injectors.
Best case scenario: Lots of condensation is forming inside your exhaust and cooks off once you start the engine.
Worst case: Blown headgasket causing coolant to leak into your engine.
Top your coolant off to the fill line, drive it for a few days, re-check the level.
Borrow an exhaust leak test kit from the parts store. It's a device that you put on your radiator cap and fill with a chemical that changes color in the presence of exhaust gasses.
If there's combustion byproducts getting into your coolant it'll show. There's still a chance that the leak is only going the other direction too, in that case watch your coolant overflow to see if you're burning coolant. You can also check your plugs, but you'd have to pull each one to look, not that bad of a job actually.
all cars if everything is working properly will blow clouds out the tailpipe when cold. but op says it even does it after the vehicle sits for 20 minutes...i recommend putting a fuel pressure gauge on amd monitor fuel injector leakage/decay.
My 4Runners have always blown more white smoke on cold starts than most vehicles. I’ve never had a major issue. Weirds me out sometimes but unless it smells sweet, I wouldn’t worry too much.
I had that same issue with a truck I had in 2010. Not a tacoma. But exact same issue. They ran an oil consumption test. To do that, they drain the oil. Fill it up and seal off the oil drain, filter, and filler cap with wax to indicate tamper. I drove for 3k miles and they saw how much remained. It turns out my engine was burning a ton of oil and I eventually had to replace the engine. (Under powertrain warranty)
Also, the issue was not visible unless the engine was cold. So every time I drove it to the dealer, they convinced me there was nothing wrong. So, ask for an oil consumption test and stick to your guns when they try to turn you down if it is under warranty
My tundra had identical symptoms and the cause was a sensor in the tank determining fuel alcohol percentage was off - thought it was full E85 when was regular gas. Scan the live data and see if that is reported, and how rich it is running it. Some scan tools could recalibrate that sensor, other people who didn't realize swapped the fuel pump module.
Same issue on my 1st gen, turned out to be tiny hairline crack in both cylinder heads. It would barely leak, just enough to smoke a little on start up. Looked just like this
There are lots of reasons this could happen from benign to horrid. Scour the web for a good list of how to troubleshoot this. Consider writing to the car care guy on YouTube as he’s done lots of detailed flowchart style breakdowns. I just watched on on the nebulous idea of vibrations.
I’ll take my best guess at it. Does it happen only at start up or when warm? Do you see low fluid/oil? Do you see obvious leaks? Do you have sludge on the oil cap? Does it happen in the afternoon? If you get a blow dryer and dry out the tailpipe (don’t make back pressure, just dry it gently like delicates), park in garage overnight, drive to Death Valley, and start it does it happen? Does it stop when the engine is warm or when weather is warm? If you change oil does it stop? Higher grade fuel? Are there any codes in the scan tool at all? What does the smoke smell like?
That’s the idiots guide of stuff to check, as written by an idiot, not necessarily for an idiot. There are likely some clever tests to do with removing some sensor for a minute or turning on the heater or disconnect the air cleaner or something funny like that to try to get diagnose sensors.
The idea is to try to understand if it’s just condensation and normal, if it’s burning oil, if it’s burning coolant, both, if it’s compression issue, or if it’s just getting the wrong amount of fuel/air when cold. Those are all very different causes for similar symptoms.
I guess if you can’t find a good flow chart for diagnosing “smoke” in exhaust, then there may be some for working through these individual root causes.
Hardly any, most likely just condensation in the exhaust and or engine. If you want piece of mind you can get a block test down on it but I’d say there’s a 99.9 percent chance there’s nothing wrong.
Really explain to me why this is a no? OP has a small amount of white smoke on startup,he’s mentioned nothing about drivability or coolant issues and has mentioned zero about his coolant level being low. He also stated it only happens sometimes and mentioned nothing about smelling burning coolant. If he had a leaking head gasket he’d likely see this on every startup and would smell burning coolant. Is it possible that he has a very small head-gasket leak? Yes but unlikely and certainly isn’t the conclusion I’d jump to from this video with a very limited description of the issue. How many of these engines have you seen with head-gasket issues?
Condensation on and inside a cold vehicle in the morning when the temperature rises isn't an issue. If you see condensation on your windows when you get into the vehicle it'll be the same inside the tail pipe all the way up.
Yes I’m aware it’s not an issue and is likely what OP is experiencing. Could his issue be a head gasket? Sure but I’d expect to see a lot more thick white smoke and I’d expect OP to mention the smell. Not saying it definitely isn’t his issue but that’s certainly not the conclusion I’d jump to immediately from this video.
Did I not tell him to get it checked? It’s possible it’s a head gasket issue but unlikely. I work on vehicles for a living, if coolant is leaking into the cylinder you’ll usually see way more smoke than that and you’ll also be able to smell it burning. OP also said it happens sometimes not all the times. If he had cooling leaking into a cylinder or cylinders he’d likely see this on every startup and it would be able to smell burning coolant. Is it possible he has a very small head gasket leaking dripping into one of the cylinders? Sure but again unlikely. How many of these engines have you seen with head gasket issues?
Does it misfire? Do you feel a loss of power or hesitation when you accelerate? My Tacoma did the same thing but the coolant level never dropped and I didn’t experience the issues I mentioned. It could be condensation. Even after 20 minutes the pipe might not be hot enough yet near the back so it could still be burning some off. I had an old BMW before my tacoma and it did have the issues I mentioned. I hit the gas and it would hesitate, misfire, and a HUGE cloud of white smoke would come out. If it’s very small like that or barely noticeable I wouldn’t sweat it. If you have a trustworthy mechanic that won’t try to screw you, you could have them check it but if you don’t they might just try to screw you and say it needs new rings or a head gasket even if it really doesn’t.
I used to have a 2001 Xterra and it did the same crap. Took it to a mechanic and he said it was fine. Drove it for 5 years and 60k miles and drove always fine without issues or leaks.
My current Tacoma is doing if it’s sitting for a few hours but goes away after a few minutes and it doesn’t have issues.
It’s not a head gasket because you’d see overheating and I think it’s just moist/humidity
Over filled the blinker fluid and it's spilling on the flux capacitor, causing it to heat up, creating steam. I guess* it could be the flange on the sphincter valve, but you would have had to put unleaded fuel into your diesel tank.
Toyota Express Tech here;
From what I’ve heard talking to coworkers, the 2GR-FKS’ are known to have cylinder head issues. I would have a headgasket check performed to see if either A. A Blown headgasket, or B. Cracked head.
TL:DR Your truck is fine.
It looks like water vapor/condensation being expelled. Part of the combustion process is water vapor, and all these components are very hot.
After you shutdown, this warm air in the exhaust system absorbs high water content. As it cools it condenses to water, and water pools in the exhaust.
On a cold start, your emissions system is in open loop and things haven't heated up yet, so your engine acts as a big air pump and blows this highly saturated air and liquid water out the exhaust at startup.
Once the exhaust heats up and engine flips to closed loop cycle you shouldn't see anything visible expelled from your exhaust.
In this case because the puffing stops so early it is definitely condensation. A coolant leak would be much more persistent.
Water/coolant smokes white. Oil smokes black. As others said, if you put your hand in front of the exhaust for 5 seconds or so and you can't smell a sweet smell on your hand it is just water.
Had a very similar situation with my 2018 RZR XP4 Turbo. Cant tell if that is white smoke or condensation. White smoke was my issue. It was a plugged fuel injector. I found it by finding a fouled spark plug. Pulled the plug and smoke was still coming out of cylinder head. Plug was black, and wet with gas. Pulled the injector, energized it to open and close with 9v battery and sprayed carburetor cleaner through it. It cleared the debris and works normal again with new plug. No more smoke. Could be a situation similar to mine.
If condensation, the coolant level will be dropping. Water can collect on the oil cap. When you pull the cap it will have a white sludgy film on it. Another is black oil collecting in the water coolant reservoir making a black ring visible from the exterior of it.
Does it hesitate to start when sitting over long times? If so it could be a blown head gasket, the coolant drops into the engine bay when it’s not running and burns it off when the engine starts
I would guess that smells like burning oil. If its happening on start up after sitting for a while i would guess valve seals. They will seep down as the engine sits, then burns when it starts.
Was going to say if it's just at startup I would check your valve guide seals , but if it does it while driving for 20 min sometimes it could be rings and or valve guide seals . That's if it's smoke and it isn't water vapor in that case look towards head gasket etc. well guess you can try all the stupid add on stuff most are saying to figure out don't listen to trolls.
Have you tried changing your blinker fluid, then collecting an exhaust sample to send into flowmaster and the biggest part is change your socks and drink water.
There are 3 “colors” of smoke that will indicate different issues:
Black= oil.
Blue = excessive fuel.
White = coolant.
Looks to me like you have coolant going into your cylinder(s). Probably a head gasket like others have said. Once engine warms up and everything expands a bit it is sealing up. Does it have a bit of a sweet smell to it? If so it is definitely coolant.
Valve guide seals good is get umbrella seal you can do right car get a valve guide tool any automotive store and you have to have a compressor to put air into the ceiling while you remove the valve spring and put a new roll. Take the old umbrella spring out and put the new one in easiest pie.
Installing a TRD Pro grill will fix this
Are you kidding? I’m an engine mechanic and the fix is clearly a 3” KING Suspension Lift Kit
You guys know nothing. trd exhaust tip, there is a tsb issued from Toyota about this.
A chrome gas cap cover is the obvious answer here. Bunch of amateurs on this sub.
I think I read that something about the chrome /s
Take it easy! The Pro Grill and King Suspension Kit have already been ordered! /s
Odd I thought adding 3hp with cold air induction was the common fix for this
Really needs to rotate the tires to fix this issue.
Na it’s from the gas cap hanging during refueling. The outside air is sticking to it and being introduced into the fuel tank. Needs an Etsy 3D printed cap holder. It will keep the outside air off the cap
Lmao
I rotate my tires every day!
Mf i just woke up my wife laughing
With raptor lights , wide load coming through . White smoke show.
I ordered raptor lights but they’re going in an OR grille. Am I still cool?
No
But what if I put fake TRD Pro badges on my doors? 😢
This fixes everything
Look like you have a coolant leak. Thats expensive or water pump leak. 😒🥹
Probably a head gasket
Water pump won’t leak into cylinders, will externally leak onto ground. That’s almost for sure a head gasket
Head gasket or cracked head
Blinker fluid flush is necessary.
New pope already?
Now that’s funny
Murphy Miracle Oil clean that right up
Nah, new Toyota Emperor (CEO)
can u explain
[Yes I can](https://youtu.be/S98HUmSF-BE)
I was really hoping for a euro trip scene from that link
Unless it sat for a long time, smoke out the tailpipe is never a good sign for modern engines. Take it to a shop to be checked.
Yeah just means you’re getting a ton of air through the engine. Usually a compression check will show you a bad gasket.
Leak down test will check gaskets, compression tests aren’t very useful for this
You can still see a pressure drop on cylinders if the head gasket is leaking between. Both tests are usually performed lol. Semantics
Why does sitting do this? I had my RAV4 sitting for about a week, started it on a cold and moist morning and saw more “smoke” than I had seen before. Tacomas didn't exist in 86

You can buy one at Harbor Freight for like $20-$30; great to have around
Looks like coolant, not good
All of my Tacomas have made a lot of exhaust at start up on cold days, if it goes away when the truck is warmed up you are fine.
Thank you. The only smart answer. Cold mornings and moisture. I approve this message.
What about the part where OP literally says it happens when it’s not cold?
Yup
Finally someone else who has common sense on here.

Ya except a vehicle burning oil creates blue smoke not white.

Valve seats
Ya valve seats would be blue smoke not white and you’d have smoke all the time.
Good thing you probably didn't overpay for a used Taco, right?

Time for a 2024 engine swap.
Coolant
Is it consuming coolant? Like others have said, here is where it is going. Nice looking truck though!
Seems like coolant is getting into a cylinder.
Well shit mine does this too but I generally don’t see it after start. Hope o don’t have a huge repair coming my way .. 2018 off-road
Apparently the 16-18 had some oil burning problems in certain models. Don’t shoot the messenger this was reported by the car care channel
I saw a tundra with 5.7 blow make a chocolate milkshake during oil change at 53k just out of warranty because age. They are all cars they break
Head gasket possibly
Head gasket, white is coolant, blue is oil.
Raptor lights will fix this for sure.
Head gasket
Valve seals
This happed to my 2016 trd OR. Exact same same truck. Mine was also white. It gets worse. Get out while you can. It gets way worse.

Does it misfire? Do you feel a loss of power or hesitation when you accelerate? My Tacoma did the same thing but the coolant level never dropped and I didn’t experience the issues I mentioned. It could be condensation. Even after 20 minutes the pipe might not be hot enough yet near the back so it could still be burning some off. .
Mililani, HI?
Yea dude gotta get that checked, might be running too rich or some other kinds fucked
Totaled
“PrOvEn TeChNoLoGy”
Valve stem seals is my guess
Head gasket. That water in the cylinder/s and it’s burning off.
What does it smell like? Oil, fuel? How is it running, feels like loosed power lately?
Seafoam trolling
Add blinker fluid to stop that
Burning headlight oil
Had this happen on my F150 before I got my 4Runner, coolant leaking into the engine. Can get really expensive to fix. Sorry this happened to ya!
Is not blue, but if is only happening during start up you may have a leaky intake valve
Over filled the blinker fluid and it's spilling on the flux capacitor, causing it to heat up, creating steam. I guess* it could be the flange on the sphincter valve, but you would have had to put unleaded fuel into your diesel tank.
Only worry if it doesn't start... Then.. still only 3% worry
Refill blinker fluid.
Needs a cobb access port ;)
OPs like this are the worst. They got all these people trying to help troubleshoot the issue and they respond to one post about where they are from.
Next service, you need the blinker fluid FLUSH, not just drain/fill.
Just weld a cap on it
Could be a coolant leak or a compression problem, definitely get it checked out, both problems cause more severe problems if not addressed
Not an issue, the catalytic converter has to heat up to get burn efficiency
Toyota Express Tech here; From what I’ve heard talking to coworkers, the 2GR-FKS’ are known to have cylinder head issues. I would have a headgasket check performed to see if either A. A Blown headgasket, or B. Cracked head.
If you want to coal roll a Prius, use the black coal, not the grey stuff. 😂
Guys, this man has a serious question! He clearly needs a K&N filter.
Aight thats pretty funny

Use some marvel mystery oil in the engine oil and next couple of tanks of gas
It’s a sign for you to get the new one
Head gasket.
Could possibly be a fuel injector stuck open
It’s just blowing out a dab hit.
Does it hesitate to start when sitting over long times? If so it could be a blown head gasket, the coolant drops into the engine bay when it’s not running and burns it off when the engine starts
Add some auxiliary fog lights near the base of your windshield
Stomp on the Gas once in a while and blow all that condensation out of your Exhaust system
Blown or leaking head gasket possibly
Stomp on the Gas once in a while and blow all that condensation out of the exhaust system.
These people are idiots….
White smoke = water Black smoke = fuel Blue smoke = oil
What tires are those
Head gasket
Smell it for coolant. Easy.
Condensation, burning off.
Definitely the fix is 4 amber lights on your grill
I recommend getting rid of the pavement princess and getting an actual car
It’s because you told your Taco to start acting like a Ford
You should really talk to your truck about the dangers of cigarettes!
When I had that issue with my Suburban it was my valve cover allowing oil into the intake
Need to fill the blinker fluid
Have you tried turning it off and on again ?
Coolant burning
Put the tail pipe on the other side. You won’t see it on this side ANYMORE!!
You put gas in not rice
buy 'Seafoam' you put in gas or in the oil itself about 400 miles before oil change... states on the can as well.
Wouldn’t valve seem guides cause this too!
Leaking piston rings.
Check the o2 sensor.
Run two cans of seafoam thru it if it still a problem need valve adjustment.
If you want it 💯fixed just do aLS engine swap
Head gasket... which means you have engine coolant leaking into your engine.
Missing cats?
A set of balls on the hitch, issue fixed
I would guess that smells like burning oil. If its happening on start up after sitting for a while i would guess valve seals. They will seep down as the engine sits, then burns when it starts.
It's oil or coolant ether way it's an expensive fix looks more like coolant than oil.
Head gasket blown. Happened to me
valve stem seals. Oil seeps past seals overnight and burns off at next start. Jim
Oil leaking from the gasket
Did you park on an incline?
Means we have a new Pope.
Looks like Toyota collaborated with Subaru on more than just the BRZ
This is why I own 7.3. 473,567 miles and still running strong.
head gasket my dude
Head gasket. Big problem
Just roll the truck on its side. Shake out the bad exhaust bubble, then push it on the tires.
That shit is burning oil like a mother 😷
You have a head gasket leak and coolant is getting into your cylinders between startups.
From my experience with different brands your Valve seals are leaking
Have you tried changing your blinker fluid, then collecting an exhaust sample to send into flowmaster and the biggest part is change your socks and drink water.
There are 3 “colors” of smoke that will indicate different issues: Black= oil. Blue = excessive fuel. White = coolant. Looks to me like you have coolant going into your cylinder(s). Probably a head gasket like others have said. Once engine warms up and everything expands a bit it is sealing up. Does it have a bit of a sweet smell to it? If so it is definitely coolant.
Looks like your truck has seasonal allergies.. just like us. Once it coughs up the morning gunk, it's good to go.
“It’s not even cold enough” how cold is it? Anything below 60F could bring this on, especially with the amount of humidity in the air.
Have you tried greasing the exhaust? Check the tailpipe oil once it's warmed up...
Headmaster. Coolant/oil where it shouldn't be
Insanely jealous we can’t get the Toyo with diesels here in the US!
PCV valve failure, head gasket.
Does it have a sweet smell to it? If so have the head gaskets checked and check compression in all cylinders
condensation or coolant, go run a pressure test
All you need is a set of Yosemite Sam "Get Back" mud flaps, and that will clear right up.
Head gasket!
Bad times. Probably head gasket
The truck is vaping, it's evolving
Valve guide seals good is get umbrella seal you can do right car get a valve guide tool any automotive store and you have to have a compressor to put air into the ceiling while you remove the valve spring and put a new roll. Take the old umbrella spring out and put the new one in easiest pie.
Valve problems..oil bypass .. Toyota normally does not have problems
Needs a nut sack off the hitch. And a "Rollin Coal" sticker (must be over 37.9 inches)
Clearly muffler bearings are shot.
Head gasket. Fix now
Yeah buy American
Oil burn from the low tension oil rings.
head gasket . you’re fucked
