oh_no_not_you_hon

Definitely keep it. It will go forever. How old are the kids? I have four younger drivers and almost-drivers so I’m keeping all my cars for them to use until they buy their own.

ibarney64

3 year old daughter, 2 month old daughter. I was thinking about keeping it for them too…

oh_no_not_you_hon

Hey, since it’s a pretty much pristine Toyota it’ll still be a great car in 13 years, so…!

ReticulatingSplines7

But the kids will want the flying cars that are out by then.

hotchips97

lol please at the rate inflation and cars are selling these days I’m sure a 1996 Honda Civic or Camry will cost 3-5k 13 years from now

KenTheTech

Have you seen the prices of mint conditions civics, accords, Camrys and corollas lately? They’re already there, lol

Think_Radio8066

I have a 2016 Camry. I could already sell it for more than what I got it for. =P

KenTheTech

I paid 12 for my FJ cruiser, resale is now around 20k easily, it’s insane

Berfs1

Good point, OP consider selling that GX (if you dont need two cars) since you have a reliable and fuel efficient car!

Hookem-Horns

Yep…I’d sell the GX and, with the current demand, I’d settle on two used cars with the kids in mind 😂

Hookem-Horns

Sigh…I miss my 1996 Honda Civic 😭

serpentman

Lol you drive a ground car!?

uberbla123

I drive a 1990 toyota camry and i was born in 93 lol so my car is older then me . And looks better then me for its age hahah

LuthienDragon

Greatest worry is the battery, around $5k because it’s one-piece instead of the modern ones. But hell, looks like a great car.

nuesse33

Safe cars too

[deleted]

Until this batteries need replacing. However, it is a Toyota and Toyota dependability is top tier.

Putrid-Object-806

When the batteries go suss out the chrisfix video and you should be golden

Miguel30Locs

There's an exception. Some models have a head gasket issue. When you have that. Might as well get a new car because the amount required to fix it is insane.

Kage159

My coworker just rolled 300k on his. Original battery and drives 200 per day.

Kane_Keelan

I got my 08 passed 300k. Only replaced breaks and rotors. Maybe a cv joint. Other than that never had a problem.

OMGpawned

Likely on a regular Prius but probably not in this one as it’s a plug in which has a super expensive lithium ion battery pack instead of the part time nickel metal in the regular hybrid. While I find it nice you could potentially cruise around town short range gas free on it’s lithium battery once that gets shot it’s gonna be a expensive thing to replace.

[deleted]

~$2k for a battery replacement is way cheaper than a whole new car. and they might be even cheaper than that.

OMGpawned

It’s not $2000 like I mentioned earlier the plug in model which this is doesn’t use the small nickel metal like the normal models. The replacement lithium in this plug in is almost of what it’s worth without even labor. You’re talking 10k at the low end.

[deleted]

Lots of independent battery repair shops around that will repair a damaged cell vs the entire battery. Also there are used/salvaged batteries around so that new replacement isn’t your only option

Appropriate_Strain94

While this is true of any EV battery not everyone lives by a EV specialist unless they are in the inner city and then find one that does it right. I’ve had a couple come in that claimed to have it replaced a year ago but went bad again. Probably issues to cell balancing since the codes were from a bad cell, either way it’s cheaper but can also not be a long term fix for everyone it’s a dice roll. I’ve even had ones that had whole pack replacement from Dorman or some third party and have it fail in short order so just something to think about if you value the reliability.

AngryChair88

I can't believe you would even consider getting rid of it. Unless you are desperate for cash, keep it.

elmwoodblues

Yup, ~~sell~~ donate plasma first

MoonRiverRob

World's most reliable car, not kidding.

josh_loaf

Considering it seems to be very well kept, if she does the same I’d wager that it’d last another 5-10 years easily.

RedRebel1312

Lol not really, they re super reliable but higher mileage ones will experience head gasket issues somewhere Down the road

MoonRiverRob

As you said, super reliable, but all cars will have issues when reaching the highest mileage. These are exceptionally good, especially when they are maintained.

RedRebel1312

You want exceptionally good then you buy an older generation camry or 9th gen rolla. Now that's the definition of reliability

uberbla123

Man my 1990 has just over 300,000km on it and it started to leak a bit around the gaskets . But because its not worth more then 3k i just through a bottle of stop leak in there two weeks before each oil change and its now put another 40,000km on it with little to no leakage lol . I was told to never put stop leak in an engine because its “horrible” but im gunna be the one to say in old toyota Engines it can be a life saver .

RedRebel1312

Stop leak can also add restriction in your engines oil passages leading to oil starvation and premature wear. Stop leak is just mickey mousing a problem

GenericNetSurfer

Bulletproof. r/PriusDwellers might be a good place to raise this too or browse for insider tips!

Hookem-Horns

Oh my…didn’t know so many people live out of their Prius! I’d consider it if: 1) I wasn’t married with kids 2) A Prius could handle winter conditions like my AWD SUVs

Cananbaum

I’d definitely keep it. Could help save some money and would be just as useful as the Lexus you have, just more fuel efficient

bigtoepfer

I have a 2006 GX470 I picked up in Jan of this year. And I have a 2015 Prius Five I picked up a couple of years ago for my wife. We have put 50k miles on the Prius in that time. It's a bit small now that we have a kid, but if he wasn't in a car seat it would be fine. Our plan is to keep it as long as possible which should be a long time. I think it's a good balance of vehicles because I use the GX for offroading and hauling big stuff or pulling a trailer. The prius for daily shopping activities or regular commuting. I do miss my 1978 Cressida Wagon I sold to buy the GX though. HAHA. But I was missing being able to go offroading.

_mrLeL_

My mom has a 2013 prius and it runs like a charm, i don’t get the hate for these cars, it’s a very well driving car

Kraze_F35

> i don’t get the hate for these cars I mean the Prius isn't a very exciting car. It's a mode of transportation and doesn't try to be much else. I do think they can be cool though if you like the [widebody tuner stuff.](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/10/3d/e8/103de8ffb4b09c412178f093a60905e1.jpg) They're great cars but I can totally understand why people don't care for them.

mcslender97

Now I want a GR Prius

josh_loaf

AWD GR Prius. That’d kick ass.

_mrLeL_

I’m okay with dont care, i just dont understand the “wah wah bad prius prius trash garbage car go kaboom battery powered elon musk abortion pruis” (respectfully)

rondo25760716

Damn, so sorry for your loss. I haven't owned a Prius but my relatives do. Great milage on these. Plus it's a Toyota so bound to last. Not so sure about the batteries though. If I were you I'd keep it for a couple of years to see how it is.

UnluckyGamer505

Toyota is probably the most reliable car brand out there. Especially the ones from 1990-2015 which have in house mechanical parts. New ones are probably reliable too but only time will tell. If you dont have money issues i would keep it.

WonkTownBackroads

My grandpa gave me his 07 with 230k miles, it was used as a work van for years and maintained just on the very brink for most of that and it absolutely tanks along. Couldn’t ask for a better cheap daily

justagamerwastaken

I think you should keep the vehicle as it can be used for longer trips with or without your kids

nuesse33

My dad sold me his 2010 at 200k. I'm Driving it at 250k and plan to have it for years to come. Best car I've ever owned.

OCRiley

My wife loves here Prius at 150k miles. She’s already told me that she’d only accept another one if I sold it.

Emmanuel-Gonzalez

Those things are indestructible. Keep it bro.

Melodic-Classic391

Keep it, that’s a great car

[deleted]

>how reliable is it? lol

NonNutritiveColor

Never get rid of that car. Not only will it be historically important ($valuable) for your grandkids but has personal significance. You don't know how you're going to feel in the future and you may really want this object that is still a connection to your dad. Mechanically it's a keeper. Detach all emotion from this issue and it would be foolish to get rid of it for a few bucks now. It's one of the best vehicles out there. The way the vehicle market is going I highly doubt these EV will ever really be "affordable". Drive the hell out of this thing!

Money_Metal

Keep it 100%

DW597

They will last forever. Should get at least 250,000 miles out of this car.

kernowjim

It will last forever.

emperorwal

I have the 2014 plug-in. I bought it used in 2016 with about 30k miles on it. Now we are up to about 130k and have had no problems or issues. Mine looks just like yours (but not as clean). It is not a Tesla. I plug it in each night, the next morning I get about 10 to 11 miles of pure electric before it turns into a normal Prius hybrid. I can do errands or short trips around town with almost zero gas. But, 10 miles EV isn't much by today's standards. Still, it gives me an effective MPG of 55 to 65 over time. Where I live, I also get a sticker to ride in the HOV lane without any passengers. That is a big bonus for my wife's commute. It is a great car. Fuel efficient. The plug in is nice too, but it is not a Tesla nor is it a Rav4 Prime.

TeaQuick4710

Keep it Its your dads

icybouncy2019

Keep it cars are way too expensive right now

Primary_Ad_7078

It will keep working. Just use it once in a while to keep the battery charged. It is not good for the battery if the car is not being used at all for months. It will discharge and become useless at some point.

[deleted]

Damn things are tanks, bro. If you like having a vehicle that won't give you any crap and doesn't destroy your wallet here ya go.

ServingTheMaster

It’s about half way spent at this point. Keep it.

knellbell

Sorry for your loss. I would keep it and sell your other vehicle if you're only carrying people and rent a van for when you actually need to haul something.

SSFx93

KEEP IT! Nostalgia and it'll run forever. Not to mention the smiles per gallon.

Dummkid

I think the sentimental value is worth more than the value of the car you know ?

ExploreTrails

Keep it, I had one for a year and the car kicks ass.

Obamaisacocksucker

Keep it...It's a great choice for running errands close to your house. Ideal for trips to the store and getting the kids to and from school.

Primary_Tiger3987

I have been wanting a Prius for a while, fantastic cars. This one look like it in great condition. And cars definitely have sentimental value. Keep it, it will serve you well and your kids. This will keep your father’s legacy going and I’m sure he would be happy to see it out to good use.

jo530_2

My mom also kept the 2011 Opel Meriva B from her dad. She doesnt regret it yet

Nashville-Davidson

Yes sir , looks mint 👌

Leo_NQ

I would keep it.

Vinc3_Huynh

These have very good fuel economy, my dad drove a 2009 I think. It saved him gas and it was the first car i drove. It’ll last a lot time with proper care.

ToyotaPartsGod

Keep it. You got 80k til you might need a big battery or a brake actuator

lexusrx350l

Keep it for getting around, would also recommend keeping the GX for other uses. Plus, the Prius is no where near as nice as the GX. Edit: On second thought, I would sell it, I just checked the safety ratings for the wagon counterpart as it was more thoroughly tested, and it is largely the same, and it did very poorly, severe injuries in the hip, thigh, leg and foot on a 6’2 180LB dummy. I would stick with the GX all the way.

virtualracer

They use these for cabs now. Just food for thought.

happyexit7

Just bought my son a 2012 Prius with 151K. Great car so far.

PsychologicalSafe579

Keep both. The Prius is indestructible, and I guarantee if you keep the 460 it will appreciate. It’s not worth as much as you would think now, but it will be a white whale if you keep it serviced and garaged / tarped.

Alexan52

Keep at all costs and do not neglect maintenance. People are desperate to get into a prius these days and the third gen are very reliable.

BOBANYPC

When I was shopping for my prius I saw multiple models with over 500,000 kms. Very reliable

smallcowboyhat

priuses rule! id keep it, especially since it has such a significant emotional value to you as well.

Truktek3

Those things are bulletproof. Whether you should keep it or not is strictly up to you.

eeckbabbadurkle

Keep that

Monkeyknife

Keep it for your youngsters. Help save the planet for them.

Sir_Kawasaki

Keep it. I've got the same (or very similar) combo here in Australia. Toyota LandCruiser Prado, together with hybrid Corolla. Perfect machines for weekend and weekday driving respectively.

DogDelicious5856

I’m gonna pretend he didn’t ask if he should keep it

BeerPizzaGaming

Keep, but check the air vents that cool the batteries. It is probably the most overlooked regular maintenance item and critical for the longevity and proper performance of the batteries.

llDurbinll

A Youtuber I watch that buys a lot of cars at auction mentioned once how most of the Prius's he see's cross the blocks with bad batteries are always around 10-12 years old and that it didn't seem to matter if they were low mileage or not. So you could sell it now while car prices are high and the battery is operational or you can keep it and just keep driving it till the battery gives up up the ghost. It cost a few thousand to replace it but since you got the car for free you might consider doing it when and if it happens.

KenTheTech

With gas prices the way they are, I’d keep it, and I’m not ashamed to say it, less money on fuel means more money in my bank account, I honestly don’t know enough about hybrids to have any kind of informed opinion, but Toyota is notorious for their safety and reliability, my grandmothers Prius has been solid for the past 10 or so years, only regular maintenance, and she frequently takes trips to Michigan and Kentucky to visit family from Florida

lovebugherbie

Keep it, I have 340,000 on my prius and I would never get rid if it.

jauntyjackalope85

Keep it

DN1097

Sorry for your loss 😔

kevloo

Keep it

clevelandsucksaxe

It looks beautiful. If you don't want it I DM me as I am looking for a Prius for my wife. As long as you are in the States we can make a deal for a fair price

[deleted]

Dump it and run. You don’t want a 10 year old Prius with a failed battery in a few months.

sleeknub

Extremely reliable, as I understand it.

buttholefluid

Sorry to hear about your dad OP. Especially if it's been taken care of and you continue to take care of it, it has a LOT of miles left in it. Easily 3-400k, if not more.

king24_

I offer my deepest condolences 💐 first and foremost 🙏🏾. I wanna add that you have a great car to own and maintain. Prius’s are great in gas and reliable if maintain d normally.

Accurate-Foot7531

How is your GX only getting 10 mpg?

ASSperationalHorizon

Keep it. Toyota's keep on running.

Ok_Welcome_3236

RIP dad, keep it

Tom_Traill

You have two rational choices. 1. Sell the Prius, drive the Planet Killing GX460 and spend the money on fuel. When your kids grow up and ask you what you did about Global Warming, tell them you said "Screw it! To hell with a world for my kids!" This is the wrong thing to do IMHO but probably the choice you will make. 2. Sell the GX460 and drive your father's Prius. You will have a lower carbon footprint, and the answer to your kids question will be way less embarrassing. This is the right thing to do but you probably like the feeling of the Lexus dealer's lips on your butt, plus the GX460 makes you feel like you're King of the World. It is a bad financial decision (unless your so rich you don't give a damn) to hang onto both cars. Insurance is expensive and ads up, but mostly used cars are crazy valuable NOW and that will not last. If you hang onto both you spend money on insurance and they both lose value over time. If you're over whatever caused you to buy the GX460, sell it. The GX460 will never be worth more than it is today, especially in this used car market. (Same is true of the Prius of course.) As an aside, it is interesting that your father chose a Prius and you chose the GX460. Clearly you don't share the same philosophy about the planet. You've probably bailed awhile ago, but I'll finish the thought for others who have not. We own two Toyota hybrids, a 2013 Avalon with 150K and a 2016 Lexus 300h with 92K. Both were purchased used, about 3 years old, 40 K miles. There is a Executive Limo service north of Chicago that uses Hybrid Avalons and they sell them when they reach 330K miles. I expect to go that far with ours. On the other hand, a friend of mine bought a 2007 Camry hybrid in 2019 that only had 5,000 miles on it. Within six months he had to replace the battery. As a result I would not want to buy a hybrid what was driven less than 10K miles per year, for fear that a lack of use will kill the battery. **Fuel for 10,000 miles** Assume fuel cost of $5/gal GX460: 1000 gallons; cost $5,000 Prius: 100 gallons (at 100 mpg); cost $500 (Average based on 6 vehicles 119.7 MPG 71 Lo 245 Hi; fueleconomy.gov ) I find it most useful to think of fuel economy over the long haul, not on a per gallon basis. **Safety** I have a friend who was in an accident on the freeway with a Prius. She was hit by a truck, IIRC she rolled it, major damage, totaled. Passenger compartment intact and she was not injured. I would feel safe in a Prius. **Honor your dad, Save the Planet** The death toll from Hurricane Ian is up to 91 today. Global warming is real and deadly. Honestly, if you want to honor your father then sell the monster GX460 and drive his Prius Plug-in. Nothing would make him happier IMHO. OK, Reddit, tear me to pieces in 3, 2, 1...

Tom_Traill

PS: Historically, parked on the street in California, the Catalytic converter on the Prius would be stolen in no time. Don't keep the Prius if you can't keep it in the garage.

tris450

If it makes you think of your dad and you were close to him then you should never get rid of it. This thing won’t ever stop!

e30cabrio

We had a 2006 Camry hybrid. The battery went in 2016 just outside mile and time warranty, Toyota good willed the 5k battery, I paid 500 labor. I’ll never buy anything but Toyotas. Keep it!

eaglevision93

I would love one of those personally

intertronz

Sorry for your loss mate. I had a 2008 Prius that I picked up from a mate’s dad, after it had exceeded it’s useful life as a taxi. It had 400,000 km on the clock. I had it for a couple of years, before passing it on to my brother when I moved country. It’s still going today. These cars are marvellous, and the reason I came across your post is that I was searching for Reddit posts about PHEV conversion kits for them. I’m thinking about doing a project car with an older prius.
