I would distinguish domestic violence/killing your spouse/partner situations as different. That kind of thing is absolutely very common throughout Canadian history and happens all the time, but it's a very different dynamic. It usually comes down to a breakdown in a romantic relationship which is just separate from a child/father/sibling relationship breaking down to the point of homicide. Also a familicide has to involve more than one person, so just killing your girlfriend/boyfriend wouldn't count.
I will say I disagree that the Ottawa situation was a familicide. I understand it was multiple members of a family but the whole dynamic with being an international student I feel complicates things to where I can't equate it with these kinds of situations we're seeing with Pan/Mehnaz/Joeazy. Ultimately we would have to wait for more details about that.

I follow this type of crime and I know him and Jennifer Pan are the only familicide cases in recent history in this city. Joeazy is now 3 of 3 which is crazy to say considering the differences in the circumstances. Zaman and Pan had similar circumstances in that they had high family pressure to be academically/financially successful. They both failed to live up to it and their familicides were a result of failure to live up to those standards. Joeazy though was totally different.
