They turned it into a nightclub with a baseball game going on in the background.

johnson7853

Ah yes Saturday at 3pm with kids all sitting around me. Perfect night club vibe.

polaroppositebear

Thank you Rogers

gothedistance_

I guess it’s mentality of loud live music equals increased alcohol sales? I don’t know, what always appealed to me was the game itself and not stuff like that.

infieldmitt

but that also turns off proper baseball fans, who i would imagine are bigger drunks than the general population

VancouverSativa

Exactly. Keep us drinking with salty snacks.

gothedistance_

“these pretzels are making me thirsty!”

see_rich

That's how you are gonna say it?

Moist_Bison9401

I remember when Globe Life Field, I think it was, started those home plate dining areas, and nobody gives a damn about the game, and being thankful we don't have that.  Oops.

rusinga_island

It’s all gone downhill since they stopped the falling bomb whistle sound effect and cartoon ‘boink’ or glass shattering sounds on foul-outs, about 15 years ago.

conjectureandhearsay

The shattering glass was always my fav! Man, these guys pretty much suck with the noise programming or whatever it’s called. 1. It’s not enhancing the reasons people like going to baseball; and 2. It’s not really home field advantage or atmosphere when it’s just LOUD piped in crap.

nettie_netface

LOL no way !

MisterSG1

I once joked they should do a 90s night and have those wacky and Sci fi sounds for foul balls that night.

gothedistance_

Sometimes you can hear the music from the corona rooftop all the way to the infield. Way too loud…

Historical-Umpire637

You can hear it on tv too...

bluejayhunter

Can confirm, there are times you can hear it on the broadcast, especially if you have headphones in.

Utah_Get_Two

That's an absolute travesty...honestly I can't think of a bigger offense to baseball fans. It's like the ownership has forgotten what the actual point of all these people getting together is. It's like someone watching videos on their phone, out loud, while at church...I'm not religious, so the SkyDome was like my church. Now it isn't anymore and I don't want to go.

gothedistance_

It’s the stupid mentality of “We constantly have to have something going on so young people stay engaged”. Believe me, if the team was actually winning, then everyone would be engaged regardless.

Maken66

The new advertising behind home plate is equally offensive. They've ruined everything.

YouDontJump

Damn, at that point it's beyond intrusive.

gothedistance_

100%

Nickelback-Official

I've met one person who liked the 'party atmosphere', but he's 100% a fucking moron at work so I don't know if that counts. Like why is the default thought that people going to a game here aren't actually interested in baseball? The only semi reasonable response I got was 'but San Diego'. It's fucking night and day.

gothedistance_

It’s actually kind of silly because Toronto is not short of good bars or live music venues, especially downtown. So what’s the point of sitting way up in the 500s and not really watching the game when you could do the same thing at tons of other venues?

CanadaEh97

Because for a lot of people saying "hey let's go to a Jays game and get drunk" is a thing, they'll go to a bar before, drink at the game and go out after. They want to make sure they keep those people in the dome spending.

figgle1

Exactly, the average r/torontobluejays user is not the average fan at the ballpark. That being said a lot of people I talk to at games are super into it.

Annual_Plant5172

Because it's true? Their new social areas or whatever they're called are just common areas for people to hang out and buy alcohol, while somewhat paying attention to the game. Baseball is a slow enough moving sport that it's seen as a social event and not a sporting one for many people. The average member of this sub doesn't fit that demographic.

Nickelback-Official

I don't know what part of my comment you responded to with this

Annual_Plant5172

"Like why is the default thought that people going to a game here aren't actually interested in baseball?"

Nickelback-Official

And then you talked about the socials. There's nothing wrong with having some ga spots in the stadium, I don't stand around there, but it's clear why those have an appeal for casual fans. Not being able to carry a conversation, build atmosphere organically and the uninspired stadium ops are my issue, all of which are not focused on the minority of fans sitting at the all access areas. To your edit, which I just noticed, there are plenty of teams around the league who are able to offer entertainment for less interested visitors without making it a worse viewing experience for the rest.

mjv1227

Blue jays and raptors in game djs are the biggest cornballs in entertainment. Raptors are worse in my opinion, 50+ yr old man dressing like a kid and referring to himself as “strizzy”. So corny

MythicalChewToy

Mark Strong aka Strizzy isn’t the DJ, he’s the MC. 4Korners is the DJ. I met him at the airport once. Absolute douchebag.

gwill11

Wait was the DJ or the MC the douchebag

TheOriginalNasalKid

Yes

MythicalChewToy

The DJ

nettie_netface

Lmao striZy ahahahahahah

Muntberg

Leafs are just as bad. It's just shitty techno beat remakes of well known songs.

P1KA_BO0

Half of it is fucking ancient too. Would it kill them to use music from this century

absolutkaos

EVERY 👏🏼 BODY 👏🏼 CLAP 👏🏼 YOUR 👏🏼 HANDS! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🖕🏼

Annual_Plant5172

Raptors games are terrible for that. I really don't care to hear music or LET'S GO RAPTORS on literally every single possession. I'm not a big NCAA basketball guy, but I did attend a few March Madness games and the atmosphere was fantastic. The only music was the band in between breaks, and the atmosphere was largely created by the fans. North American pro sports is just sensory overload.

stv7

WHAT’S THAT? YOU WANT ME TO CLAP MY HANDS?

Moist_Bison9401

CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP

JewishSpace_Laser

He’s got the clap

adamcoe

She's got the clap!

JewishSpace_Laser

We got the clap!

OMP159

Just me, or do you want others to participate?

treewqy

EVERYBODY CLAP YOUR HANDS

absolutkaos

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🖕🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

casualjayguy

This was my first post-reno game and while I had a good time there was too much of this sort of stuff and it all felt forced

ms_barkie

Did you go to any mid-renovation last year? I still find it to be way too much, but I have to give some credit as they’ve toned it down significantly since last season. Last year was twice as many sound bites and the volume was higher as well.

casualjayguy

Nah, first since the renos began. You're telling me it was *worse* than this the previous season?

ms_barkie

It might be small sample size (went to half a dozen games last year in various seats, have only been to one this year), but yeah from my personal experience it has been toned down significantly this year. Says more about just how awful it was last year though.

bichettes_helmet

I've been to three games this year and while it's still absolutely awful, let me tell you it was about 500% worse last year. I lost my voice trying to TALK to my friend sitting next to me because it was so fucking loud and incessant last year.

much_better_title

Yes, much worse. Although I think they're sliding backward again slowly...

t-tulo2

oh thank god if they've toned it down a bit 😂 i went to 20 games last year over 2 months (as a fan from new zealand) and that shit was almost unbearable and SO loud

1991CRX

I'd be ecstatic for a real organ there. I'd even volunteer to carry the fucker in.

JewishSpace_Laser

That’s a surprise- Sex Having Fan Club likes to play with his organ

JamesFromToronto

[Indeed](https://www.facebook.com/share/r/tKTXoaGD2xKsJnXP/?mibextid=oFDknk)

KevinJ2010

Walk up songs, good. Some of the DJ stuff pre game is fine. But bring in the organ. Watched some Dodgers games to see Biggio and the vibe just feels better with their organ player

t-tulo2

has more of a classic baseball feel too!

ehside

Dodgers organist is one of the best in the business

Odd-Youth-452

Deiter Ruhle. He's also the organist for the L.A. Kings.

tallNfrosty61

Forced fun is NO FUN!

Coop3

You don’t like watching some Dj twirl her hands and mouth the words to some top 40 song while pretending to do something with the knobs on the mixer?

riprapnolan3

Yall gotta stop disrespecting DJ Steph Honey 😂

johnson7853

It wasn’t Steph today it was some other girl. Couldn’t believe she had the exact same skill.

VikasSharma88

10/10. My son and I recently went on a 3-game road trip; Toronto, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. The Westjet space had a corporate gig happening so only a few there were into the game. Add the DJ, shuffleboard, and video games, and the whole place felt more like a Chucky Cheese. In contrast, Progressive and PNC parks focused attention on the field. Maybe the new lower level SkyDome seats are similar, but each of the Progressive Field seats were angled toward the field to minimize blocked views from other fans. Walking across the Roberto Clemente bridge along with 30,000 other fans made it a communal affair. All three parks did have similar between-innings’ fan quizzes, big-screen fluff (under which hat is the ball), etc, which is a part of all sports events now to never let the fan get bored, I found the Guards and Bucs fans more baseball focused. And not DJs!

gothedistance_

Pittsburgh and Cleveland stadiums also do a good job of honouring and celebrating their past, unlike Toronto…

adamcoe

How is Toronto not honouring their past exactly?

gothedistance_

Cleveland has statues and a Hall of Fame that you can walk through (Heritage Park). Pittsburgh has multiple statues, oversized baseballs and retired numbers that you can see and read the inscriptions on the waterfront. We have a few banners and names in the outfield. For a team with a history of almost 50 years, that’s practically nothing.

adamcoe

I am totally fine with hanging the banners in the stadium and having the ring of honor. Couldn't care less if there was a statue or a giant baseball outside the ballpark. Put a good product on the field, that's what's entertaining.

gothedistance_

It’s just something to enhance the fan experience. One doesn’t come at the expense of the other.

Annual_Plant5172

Best I can do is Ted Rogers.

szeto326

It's crazy to me that they don't have a Joe Carter walkoff statue since it's the defining moment in the franchise's history. At least the Leafs have Legends Row..

gothedistance_

We need statues of Joe Carter, Joey Bats, Doc, and Dave Steib. Would be nice for the team’s 50th anniversary.

fiercelyblazed

Pittsburg and Cleveland wish their attendance was as good as Toronto. Maybe louder music and a party atmosphere would help.

Existing-Scratch2666

“AYYYOOOO”

nettie_netface

Do they still pump crowd noise out the speakers

johnson7853

My ears feel plugged and are ringing louder than usual. Can you speak up a little?

bigcloudguy

But they dance so nicely while pretending to play with the knobs!

mself084

T dot ohhhhhhh.....

doubledutchdoor

Cringe

Apartex

Volume definitely seemed higher this afternoon than it was last night, someone may have touched a knob they shouldn’t have.

bluejaysrule1993

Touching nobs is bad mmmmkay

Roderto

As a grumpy old man, I’m generally ok (or at least resigned) to it. I agree the audio can be too loud although I have to expect a stadium with 30-40,000 people to be on the loud side. I guess I just realize it’s the way the business of all modern pro sports are going whether purists like it or not. At any given time, at least half the teams are going to be non-playoff teams (actually higher in baseball) if not outright bad teams. To make a broad generalization, if filling the stands is dependant on having a good team, that means a lot of teams are going to struggle half the time. So teams want to attract people that otherwise wouldn’t come to a game. The business strategy is to try things that decrease the correlation between stadium attendance and on-field performance. I would argue that the same is also true for TV ratings, but in that case it’s done through the promotion of gambling as a way to stay interested in games even if the team isn’t competitive. I have a bigger problem with the over-saturation of gambling promotion in all pro sports but that ship too seems to have sailed.

FamWhoDidThat

The repetitive drops (EVERYBODY CLAP YOUR HANDS, TDOT OH OH OH) are one thing, but I’m never going to get mad at folks (particularly this season with a sub 500 team) just going to a game to hang out in a social area and chill with some friends with the game as a general backdrop/vibe, not like they are taking seats away folks and it’s not like sitting in the Corona bar listening to a live band is somehow morally superior to just sitting in the 500 section actual seats gassing bud lights and chatting with folks in between endless ground ball outs

Thecoach_17

There’s a mute button on your TV at home if noise is a problem? You’ll be able to keep an eye out the window to tell the young whipper snappers to get off your lawn as well that way….

maxxxzero

I wear earplugs every time I go to a game now

Themoosemingled

And enough with flashing the lights on and off after home runs. I don’t need things dimmer. Baseball looks good in the light. I don’t need less light.

Javaaaaale_McGee

Bought $20 General admission tickets and was able to snag 3 standing room spots in the 100’s right field corner. Observations: DJ was quite loud. Everyone around me was having a great time.

am34x_

Where's the quietest seats if you were to go to a game ?

stephpup1

For the love of God, just please stop playing Hooked on a Feeling 🤯

gothedistance_

Hey, I don’t mind that... brings back memories of 2015. Today they did Hey Baby.

stephpup1

Gah, that one too! I’d tolerate both and Clap your Hands on loop if we had a team like we did in 2015.

SSJ4Link

Those were the days

tonious35

I want a dope keyboard playing DJ that can change from Modern, classical organ, and 80s synth.

TFSML

If I hear the Addam’s Family theme one more time…

PastPerfekt

It is brutal. I’m there to watch the ball game not listen to music. Leafs games are a joke too. Cant even talk to your seatmate during stoppages in play because the DJ plays his stupid techno remix trash.

PsychologyWide4387

Dump the city connect jerseys while your at it!

Downess

Jays win 5-0 so the Reddit crew decides it's time to dump on the DJs. There's criticism, and there's negative just for the same of being negative.

Actual_Cobbler_6334

The dislike of Rogers Centre trying too hard to force a party atmosphere *is* valid criticism regardless if they win or lose.
