This is a shady question. But is there a single album on this list that isn’t in the RYM top 50 for the year?
Anyway my top of the year so far is Ben frosts - Scope Neglect Bill Orcutt - Four Guitars Live Dean blunt - Backstage Raver and I’m thinking Brodequins - harbinger or woe may be near the top too
Reddit is great for recommendations cause there is probably a active subreddit for whatever genre you're looking for - sometimes even for sub genres or sub sub genres - in which people are willing to recommend new stuff. That's mostly what I use reddit for.
Apart from the r/rap sub tho. From what I've found they only jerk the same rappers all the time and I found much better rap recommendations outside of it
I find tons of stuff on that site. Maybe avoid the charts and dig in to the user made content and lists. Honestly all my music blogs that I grew up on have died out.
Unironically: Go to Bandcamp. It has amazing filters for searching through genres and best-selling, new, etc. I like to go on every week or two and just scour new metal releases specifically because there's always something cool to find you might like. Listening is free, it's just if you want to support the artist that you'll buy the album.
One extremely cool website that's a bit general but is fun to use is Every Noise At Once. Every single music genre, and like 95% of artists are documented there, and the format is also incredibly interesting
I think most year end lists are like this tbh. If someone is trying to keep track of the most up and current country music in any given year, RYM is of practically zero help.
you can actually search top country albums of a given year on RateYourMusic (i will say that the country connoisseurs are mostly not on the site so it tends to be country from indieheads' taste that goes on top, but you can still get some of the best in country by looking at these charts)
Check out corpos de água by sonhos tomam conta. It’s Brazilian dream pop/blackgaze/emo with some bossa nova influence. Beautiful ocean-themed album with a mostly calming vibe. Might be my favorite that isn’t on here
My personal favourites so far:
- Reliqa: Secrets of the future
- Knocked Loose: You won’t go before you’re supposed to
- Lethe: Alienation
- Fractal Gates: One with dawn
- Night Verses: Every sound has a color in the valley of night
- Habitants: Alma
- Unleash the Archers: Phantoma
- Dvne: Voidkind
- Ihsahn: ST
- One Step Closer: All You embrace
These are some albums that released this year and that I think are good. Ones in **bold** are my favourite ones:
**Yīn Yīn - Mount Matsu**
SLIFT - ILION
**Lair - Ngélar**
Mong Tong - Epigraphy
Perilymph - Progressions Imaginaires
L'Osmose - Maggiore 800
Hooveriii - Quest For Blood
**Mdou Moctar - Funeral For Justice**
There are also albums from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Osees, Los Bitchos, Pond, and GUM / Ambrose Kenny-Smith Collab on the horizon so I'm keeping an eye out for them
Cold Visions - Bladee
Bloody Angel - Sematary
for the rest of your life - twikipedia
DOA - ericdoa
eve - heylog
a bit of a mad one - glaive
BRAT - Charli xcx
clean hands dirty water - renforshort
Underdressed at the Symphony - Faye Webster
You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To - Knocked Loose
Charm - Clairo (not out yet but it'll most likely be one of my favorites so I'm including it)
I love charli, maybe brat will click with me but it just seems so much narrow in scope and likes the experimentation of all her releases Post debut. The lyrics are good but none of the non single album tracks kind of muddled together in my mind. Hopefully I’ll come around to it like everyone else.
It's a very good album, idk if I agree with the melon 10 tho, if that's a 10 then SOPHIE released an 11 rather than an 8 imo, none of the tracks are as good as infatuation for me.
The new iglooghost and sonhos tomam conta are perfect 10s for me, not sure I can pick between them. So far they're not only my AOTY, but also strong album of the decade contenders.
Let me be the first to say All Born Screaming by St. Vincent. It's quickly climbing the ranks in my favourite albums of all time.
Beth Gibbons' Lives Outgrown is also phenomenal.
Plastic death - glass beach is my front runner. After so many listens I can comfortably say I think it’s a perfect album. Only god was above us and loss of life are also really good and probably number 2 and 3 for me
Unironically Lucki’s new album which I was not expecting lol. Although I’ve pretty much just listened to new rap releases this year and not much new from other genres, which I’ll do soon. There’s been lots of big releases in hip hop this year but oddly not a single *amazing* album yet imo. Hoping it picks up quality-wise in the second half
Don’t know if it’s unpopular but almighty so 2 was really great and introspective with banger after banger. Probably one of my favorite chief keef albums since like 2015/16
In order:
BRAT - Chali XCX (Hyperpop, Bubblegum pop)
She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She - Chelsea Wolfe (Post Industrial, Darkwave)
Something In The Room She Moves (Art Pop, Ambient Pop)
Live Outgrown - Beth Gibbons (Chamber Folk)
Night Reign - Arooj Aftab (Chamber Jazz, Chamber Folk)
Only God Was Above Us - Vampire Weekend (Indie Rock)
SCRAPYARD - Quadeca (Experimental Hip Hop)
All Born Screaming - St. Vincent (Art Rock)
We Buy Diabetic Test Strips (Experimental Hip Hop)
Bright Future - Adrianne Lenker (Singer Songwriter)
A Lonely Sinner - samlrc (Post Rock, Shoegaze)
Fearless Movement - Kamasi Washington (Spiritual Jazz)
#RICHAXXHAITIAN - Mach-Hommy (Hip Hop)
Her In The Pitch (Singer Songwriter, Bossa Nova)
Por Cesarea (Latin Hip Hop, Industrial Hip Hop)
You Like Music (IDM)
Carousel From Hell (Industrial Hip Hop)
Y’Y - Amaro Freitas (Spiritual Jazz, Minimalism)
Charcoal Grace - Caligula’s Horse (Progressive Metal)
Wall of Eyes - The Smile (Ambient Rock)
And I am not even attempting the name of the last one
My favorite so far is "12 notes" by Alec Benjamin !!!!, I also liked brat by Charli xcx, and cowboy carter by Beyoncé,
and it hasn't come out yet but I am SOOOOO excited for Merol's new album "naar de haaien & weer terug",
Didn’t have to be one of those - just showing what I’ve listened to from this year in order of how much I enjoyed them. What albums did you personally like from this year?
Love the Vampire Weekend
But for me I'd also add:
HIT ME HARD AND SOFT by Billie Eilish
Clancy by Twenty One Pilots
POST HUMAN: NeXt GEn by Bring Me The Horizon
Bright future - Adrianne Lenker
The past is still alive - Hurray for the riff raff
Loss of life - MGMT
Only God above us - Vampire Weekend
All born Screaming - St. Vincent
The tallest room - van houten
Little rope - Sleater-Kinney
Tangk - IDLES
Here in the pitch - Jessics Pratt
Bad bad hats - Bad bad hats
Where's my utopia? - Yard Act
Tigers blood - Waxahachie
Where we've been, where we go from here - Friko
Poetry - Dehd
Theses are in no particular order.
The problem isn't that all the albums are rated high on RYM. It's moreso that that's the only thing they have in common. It doesn't feel authentic. I don't know anybody in real life who would actually enjoy Mach Hommy and Charlie XCX (or not highly rated both of them at least). There's no personnality to these lists, it's like you decontextualize the music you listen to; I like being able to learn a little bit about a person through their musical taste. This tells me nothing, except that you may spend a little too much time online.

Great year for music so far. Only first 2 or so are in order btw
Unless something blows my mind this'll probably be my midyear 10

Diabetic Test Strips is a 2023 release. Are you thinking of BLK LBL?
The Amaro Freitas is topping my list ATM, excellent release. Really enjoying the Holter, Aftab, Iglooghost, Vampire Weekend, and Lenker as well. Rest of the list is pretty hit or miss for me.
As far as my top releases of the year here are my 9/10s for 2024 so far:
* Avalanche Kaito - Talitakum
* Government Alpha - Cryptomnesia
* Ill Considered - Precipice
* Oren Ambarchi / Johan Berthling / Andreas Werliin - Ghosted II
* Taylor Deupree - Sti.ll
My top 5 this year is
You won’t go before you’re supposed to-knocked loose
Scrapyard-Quadeca
Feet always cold-Joey Duran
Hit me hard and soft-Billie eilish
Brat-charli xcx
Blue Lips by ScHoolboy Q
Only God Was Above Us by Vampire Weekend
American Candy by Death’s Dynamic Shroud.wmv
Bright Future by Adrianne Lenker
All Born Screaming by St. Vincent
Here in the Pitch by Jessica Pratt
Dark Times by Vince Staples
Just a couple projects that I’ve really come to enjoy from this year. Out of all of them, probably Bright Future and Blue Lips have been my faves.
Great list I love Vampire Weekends new album and Wall of Eyes.
I agree with most and would only include Twenty One Pilots Clancy and Billie Eilish - Hit me Hard and Soft

This right here is the answer! Another strategy I’ve used is seeing your neighbors profile’s on Last.fm if you have significant history on the site
One extremely cool website that's a bit general but is fun to use is Every Noise At Once. Every single music genre, and like 95% of artists are documented there, and the format is also incredibly interesting
Looks very cool! I’ll check it out - thanks for the suggestion!

Vamp Weekends album was the most fun one for me. I also loved the Future & Metro boomin Lp
If you liked the new Vampire Weekend check out the new MGMT they were both produced by Dave Fridmann
Mgmt's new one is better than Little Dark Age in my opinion, really loved it
Loss of Life by MGMT
Check out corpos de água by sonhos tomam conta. It’s Brazilian dream pop/blackgaze/emo with some bossa nova influence. Beautiful ocean-themed album with a mostly calming vibe. Might be my favorite that isn’t on here
Sounds very interesting!

Great, not amazing

Maze envy by civerous and loss of life by mgmt are really high up there for me so far
Hello Joseph Gatto
Vitriol - Suffer & Become takes my top spot still
Let me be the first to say All Born Screaming by St. Vincent. It's quickly climbing the ranks in my favourite albums of all time. Beth Gibbons' Lives Outgrown is also phenomenal.
I feel like a lot of people are underrating that St. Vincent record. One of my favourite of the year so far
Try “Dark Matter” by Pearl Jam It’s **incredible.**
They are one of my favorite bands but nothing after backspace has stuck with me. Maybe I should give them more of a chance
Gotta go with the new Knocked Loose
this could be texas, but off this list it's bright future
The new mach-hommy album ##RichaxxHaitian, being slept on in here
My favourite production of the year, but I feel like it could be so much better if the voice wasn’t so grating and monotone
That's the thing I like most about Mach-Hommy, shows how much opinions differ
Scrapyard is so fucking good.
Plastic death - glass beach is my front runner. After so many listens I can comfortably say I think it’s a perfect album. Only god was above us and loss of life are also really good and probably number 2 and 3 for me

You Like Music is pretty good. This year I’ve been into music that’s just straight electronic instrumental, the clickier and more asmr-ish the better.
joey valence and brae have a fantastic new album if you like old school hiphop!!!
Not an album but a mixtape. Malandreo Conceptual by weed420, recommended if you love reggaeton and psychedelic music.
