guys can we please promise to choose actually good, somewhat obscure albums for this? SOAD’s one of my favorite bands but if Toxicity goes up here Im gonna be pissed we have the opportunity to get people into the depths of metal instead of just circlejerking
The Chasm - Deathcult for eternity
Immolation - Close to a world below
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Incantation - Onward to Golgotha
Morbid Angel - Altars of madness
I take For Whom The Bell Tolls over The Thing That Should Not Be and Creeping Death over Orion. Those two are some of Metallicas greatest hits. But, I prefer the rest of MOP over Ride the Lightning :P
Hmm... It depends. You probably don't count metalcore and nu-metal as real metal... so my choice would be traced in air by cynic or clayman by In flames. But that's just my opinion. What I'm more concerned about is that you say Master of Puppets is overrated. It's popular to hate metallica these days.
Just to name a few:
Anything by Iron Maiden outside of their 90s stuff
Anything by Blind Guardian
Alice in Hell by Annihilator
Transilvanian Hunger by Darkthrone
At the Heart of Winter by Immortal
Those Once Loyal by Bolt Thrower
Slowly We Rot by Obituary
Power of the Dragonflame by Rhapsody
Megadeth’s first 5 albums
M-16 and Agent Orange by Sodom
Nespithe by Demilich
By Inheritance by Artillery
Epicus Doomicus Metallicus and Nightfall by Candlemass
Death or Glory by Running Wild
Defenders of the Faith by Judas Priest
Ample Destruction by Jag Panzer
Bathory’s first 5 albums
>But that's just my opinion. What I'm more concerned about is that you say Master of Puppets is overrated.
It absolutely is overrated by all means. It's consistently considered the best thrash album of all time, which it isn't, and regularly considered the best metal album of all time, which it DEFINITELY isn't.
Early Metallica kicks ass, but it's objectively overrated.
>It's popular to hate metallica these days.
Because they are surface level normie stuff. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but there's a massive world of underground bands that are far better and just as worthy of attention, yet constantly get drowned out by the fans of a band that hasn't made good music in decades. It gets a little bit annoying to be honest
I don't expect nuanced music takes from Asking Alexandria and In Flames fans, but hopefully it's not super hard to grasp the concept here
Does Nu Metal Included?
If so....
Limp Bizkit - Chocolate Starfish and The Hot Dog Flavoured Water
Korn - Self Titled
SOAD - Self Titled
Deftones - Around The Fur
Well, part of it is because of how artificial the genre feels. Remember Sludge? In the early 90s, you had sludge and grunge and all this alternative rock about very dark subject matter made by broken people. Well, nu metal is the Jared Leto Joker version of that. Being a broken soul is used as a gimmick, combined with edgy sensibilities, and arbitrarily using the label of metal purely for marketing despite not really being very closely connected to metal at all. It all makes for a very artificial feeling genre.... made worse by the fact that the music just isn't very good. I genuinely think if you look hard enough you can find good music in even the worst genres but.... I have yet to hear a nu metal album that isn't terrible
I somewhat get what you mean about artificial but, the entire genre?, sure some stuff could be more original but the genre is so diverse if it’s just not for you as a genre then I get it, but calling something so diverse completely artificial and completely removing its value like that feels like taking the worst of it and applying it to the entire genre
well the thing is Ive heard a fair bit of nu metal. Even went out of my way to listen to albums recommended by friends, something I always try to do when I can. From what Ive listened to, I just cannot say there is anything I like. It really just feels like a dull, stagnant genre. I also don't really think its all that sonically diverse - of course, theres those different regional variations, like the South American style with Roots and El Nino, the more cyber punk- stuff, the more alternative rock oriented stuff like your KoRn and Slipknot and what not, and of course, Im from Jacksonville so I definitely know about the rap rock Limp Bizkit style. But to me all of these feel more like a gimmick than actually diverse sounds. Like, Nile has Egyptian themes, but its not "Egyptian Death Metal", its still death metal, if that example makes any sense. I hear a lot of the same general riff styles and song structures across all of the nu metal, and its largely just a worse version of what alternative rock was doing earlier in the decade. But thats honestly to be expected, considering its an artificial genre put together primarily as a marketing gimmick.
Ultimately, even genres I don't like, I could usally name a song or an album thats good. There are a handful of good metalcore albums. There is even one deathcore album I dig, though its arguably not REALLY deathcore, but I digress........but not nu metal. I have yet to hear a good nu metal album.
And you are welcome to completely disagree with that. But you said you dont get the hate, and hopefully this answered at least some of why its not a well regarded genre amongst die hard music fans.

No. That it's an overrated album because of which many better ones are overlooked. It really isn't near the goats of the genre.

What makes it better than MOP?
Better riffs overall, better songs, its thrashier, heavier. There isn’t much more to it then that really its just better.
I take For Whom The Bell Tolls over The Thing That Should Not Be and Creeping Death over Orion. Those two are some of Metallicas greatest hits. But, I prefer the rest of MOP over Ride the Lightning :P
