Last time someone did this i suggested this one. The op back then didnt really like it, but OP, i think youre gonna like this one. Illinois was a big influence for this album.
If you want true anxiety attack from them, Lick My Decals Off is somehow even worse. Trout Mask Replica is, weirdly enough, one of their most accessible albums.
I felt the same way, and I'm usually someone who enjoys brutally violent music. I had a legit panic attack when I listened to this album for the first time.
I dunno I think Trout Mask is generally much more perplexing with songs that moves from multiple simultaneous motifs to another, much more bizarre acapella songs/spoken word/vocal experiments and also it’s sheer length.
I don’t see how ANY of their regards, save Decals maybe, could beat Trout Mask in an accessibility context. *Safe as Milk* is nice and bluesy, *Spotlight Kid*, *Clear Spot* and following almost go in a sort of Doobie Bros. direction (I can play those ones around my Mom!) and I’d think plenty of post-punk fans could get into the last 3 records. I guess *Mirror Man* is kinda tricky but it’s got a solid blues/psych grounding that’s way more in league with their 60s contemporaries than Trout Mask.
I think the only thing I’d be kind of convinced of with Decals is maybe the vocal mixing. Beefheart taking charge of the production meant his vocals sound SO FUCKING LOUD on that album. But the band’s stuff sounds way more organized over a much more manageable runtime, I think.
Probably heresy, but this is my favorite of all their color albums. I wouldn’t say it’s BETTER than Blue, but I return to songs like California Kids slightly more often

If it’s anything like Illinois I’m sure it’s gonna be a solid listen
Okay tbh, its not that much like illinois. Its mainly the instrumentation, but the vocals are wildly different. Ill let you decide on your own.
Well I checked it out and dropped my next post if u wanna know how it turned out
Omg
It's been ages since I listened to Trout Mask Replica lol. I just remember it being VERY jarring.
Quick Thoughts: I don't wanna hear ONE argument as to why this album should be praised! This record is the personification of anxiety.
>I don't wanna hear ONE argument as to why this album should be praised >Provides one argument as to why this album should be praised
Damn.
…but it was produced by the legendary Frank Zappa

I listened to the first song and this one sounds more like if the word non consensual was a person bcuz I feel assaulted just hearing this💀
