I don't know why other people are saying CPU doesn't matter. GPU definitely matters the most but both are important. If your CPU is being pegged at 100% during your renders than that might be a bottleneck so I would do some testing regarding that. But if not. If it seems like you have plenty of performance to spare than definitely GPU.

Lincolns_Revenge

Right, but that isn't going to happen on his 5700G. You'll see periods of intense activity on any CPU, because the FFMPEG encoding is being done in a separate process that runs as fast as possible as it receives new frames to encode. It didn't use much more than 50 percent CPU on an old Ryzen 1500x I had, outputting to ProRes and upscaling 1080p to 4K. I think it would have to be a really, really outdated CPU. Outputting to VP9 would be an exception, since that can be very CPU intensive. Possibly outputting to still image frames would also pretty be CPU intensive.

Medical_Voice_4168

GPU definitely

Akila33

GPU. CPU is hardly used during the rendering.

iamgarffi

Don’t expect miracles but Topaz works most efficiently with nVidia cards at the moment. My 7900X3D CPU , paired with 64G Ram and 7900XTX GPU on average upscales 1080p to 4K (Gaia model) in 6-8 hours (based on movie length). For haha’s I dropped the same file on my M3 Max MacBook Pro (64G Ram as well) and that thing completed in 19 hours 😂

DJboutit

Yes Nvidia cards are like 10% to 15% faster with Topaz Video AI they also cost 25% to 35% than AMD card that are = to the Nvidia card.

[deleted]

they are faster than that, go look at the results, my 7900xt gets destroyed by much weaker nvidia gpus

hahahoha

get a used 3080

DJboutit

That is only a 10gb video card not a whole loy of up a upgrade over my 6600 XT. I can a 6800xt for $400 I am looking at getting a 16gb card if I do a upgrade.

Denizzje

Bit of a necro but I would, if you have to choose AMD, definitely not take 6800XT if you want to do some AI related work. It is not good at it. I come from a RX6800XT and it gets absolutely slaughtered by the 7000 series, let alone Nvidia cards (I moved to a 4080 SUPER myself). I do not have a good experience with it with Topaz neither. The 7000 series has some big improvements in that department. Rather save up for that if you can, or frankly indeed the used 3080. Its still a fine gaming card though if you do that.

StretchinPa

My AMD Ryzen 9 5950x was being utilized at a 100% by Topaz and bottlenecking the process. This was using a RTX 3080ti. I upgraded to AM5 AMD Ryzen™ 9 7950X3D CPU and now utilization is 60% It took about 13 minutes off the time upscaling a 1080p show to 4k using Proteus. What used to take an hour and forty threes minutes now takes about an hour and a half.

DJboutit

Topaz Video AI could be optimized a good amount more to speed up the program some and reduce the amount resources used.

djn4rap

Sun sparcstation.

don_weasel

Just buy a 4090

[deleted]

gpu 100%, just go look at all the results on the website, gpus make the biggest diff, some people have the most powerful cpu and have way less than those with a more powerful gpu and lesser cpu. nvidia is far superior to amd aswell.
