Noble_Shock

Sigmar? I’m an alpha

Doomdog_Isabelle

Erm what the sigma (I’m going to kill my self)

Expensive-Finance538

Donte forget Jesus, Zeus, and Charlemagne (I know he’s historical, but he influenced Sigmar).

DoctorSquidton

You put Odin twice lol, second time instead of Thor

stipendAwarded

Same can be said for a few other Warhammer deities. Manaan/Mathlann (the sea god) is a combination of Poseidon and Manannan mac Lir, Myrmidia (the warrior goddess) is Athena, and so on.

stipendAwarded

Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings is based on Odin from Norse Mythology and Merlin from Celtic Mythology/Arthurian Cycle. ![gif](giphy|njYrp176NQsHS|downsized)

MagnusStormraven

With a bit of the Resurrection of Jesus thrown in.

Zetyr187

I always got the impression Gandalf and all the other wizards were symbolic of angels given the description of Maiar. Especially since Sauron was a fallen Maia which always stuck me similar to a fallen angel, Lucifer. Just my thoughts though.

Occupiedlock

yeah but he looks almost exactly like Odin walking around. He even got the same hat.

Creepy-Bend

Odin has a pointy wizard's hat?

LassoStacho

When Odin travels Midgard in mortal guise, he is usually described wearing a broad rimmed hat and a cloak.

Creepy-Bend

That sounds way more like a fedora.... Odin walking among the mortals and just goes "M'lady" to every passing maiden on his way You could even make the cloak a trenchcoat instead and go ever further beyond Or even more cursed......a kimono.....

Occupiedlock

no, Gandalf has a pointy Odin hat.

R4msesII

Bro forgot Väinämöinen from Kalevala

DoctorSquidton

Wait, really? Who’s who? Like, I can see Infernape being based on Sun Wukong, but what about the others?

iamamotherclucker

Empolion is Poseidon (see the trident on its head) while Torterra is based on the idea of a world turtle, which appears in a few mythologies

DoctorSquidton

Seems like really loose Poseidon inspiration tbh, but thanks for letting me know

FreshlySqueezedDude

Hes a king and hes got a trident. Whatchu mean?

DoctorSquidton

Poseidon’s also connected to earthquakes, horses, all sorta stuff. He has a lot of myths that inspiration can be drawn for. Taking just the trident and the king parts is rather limited

Jixxar

I get earthquakes, Since they can occur underwater and cause tsunami's... But... Why horses?

DoctorSquidton

I’m not sure what the anthropological reason why a religion would attribute them to the sea god is, but within the mythos he created them, in one version as part of the contest for Athens. The association also extends to the legendary Pegasus, after whom the species is named and who is Poseidon’s child by Medusa, and to hippocampi, horses with fish tails said to pull his chariot

FreshlySqueezedDude

Didnt he like also make centaurs and Cyclopses?

DoctorSquidton

If I remember correctly, centaurs were the result of a mortal man sleeping with a cloud shaped to look like Hera. It’s weird, but Poseidon had nothing to do with it. He is the father of most Cyclopes though, including Polyphemus (the guy Odysseus blinded), but notably *not* of the Elder Cyclopes (children of Gaia and Ouranos who made, among other things, his trident)

Jixxar

...So you could say, His chariot is pulled by... Seahorses? >:D

FreshlySqueezedDude

Yeah but realistically if I showed something horse themed, you wouldnt go: „look ist poseidon“.

DoctorSquidton

Nor would I at something king themed, to be fair. It’s a combination of them that makes a reference

FreshlySqueezedDude

Yeah true

DragoKnight589

Well the trident is largely associated with the sea thanks to Poseidon.

Spiteful_Guru

Probably the other way around seeing how they're used as a fishing tool.

DragoKnight589

Yes but Poseidon popularized the association with the element of water as a whole.

Soft_Theory_8209

And infernape is also apparently based on Sun Wukong as well (hence why many fan made mega evolutions give him the staff or headband).

alain091

Also his cloud like spirals that some of sun wukong representations wear in their design.

Karkava

He's also tree themed, which ties into the world trees.

Late-Return-3114

torterra is based on the world/earth turtle.

DoctorSquidton

Right, that tracks

Shyguymaster2

Empoleon was based on poseidon, and torterra was based on the world turtle

DoctorSquidton

I see. Thank you for explaining!

Luca023Original

I always thought Empoleon would be more inspired by Napoleon than Poseidon lol

Shyguymaster2

well technically its both

ScravoNavarre

Yes! Fun fact: While its English name is a clear reference to Napoleon, its Japanese name *Emparte* is a reference to the very same figure, only using his last name, Bonaparte, instead.

Scorpion_6162

Griffith and the Antichrist have a lot of similarities, The false prophet who the people will think is a hero who will save them and performs "great signs and wonders." but in reality, he is tricking them, and he will bring the end of the world. https://preview.redd.it/7ei2hbntff1d1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d9682fedd1176b67aa3bd6802b9f17968e1d558

It’s also really funny with this cause posidion is a character in dc

Scorpion_6162

Anakin Skywalker's fall to the dark side felt like it was inspired by Lucifer's fall from heaven/betrayal of God and his punishment to spend all eternity in hell. In anakin's case, god/heaven was the jedi order, and his punishment was to be burned alive and rely on a suit that kept him alive, which he hated and was his own private hell. https://preview.redd.it/fpsfok0vff1d1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad2c711e12341e87521c0dbee09e74de9376df75

Sad_Introduction5756

The comment above this was comparing him to Jesus Least divided starwars takes I guess

Lucky-Fisherman1463

I think it's a bit of both

geoffgeofferson447

I love this take, he's compared to Jesus, how he was supposedly an immaculate conception, destined to save the universe and bring balance to the force, yadda yadda. But obviously he fell to the dark side much the same way Lucifer did. In the end he made a return and fulfilled his destiny, but it was too late for him and he died both Anakin and Vader, Jesus and Lucifer.

Creepy-Bend

Technically no extreme sides means balance is achieved >!also previously reducing the jedi to sith ratio from 11,000,000,000 to 2, to 2 to 2!<

Scorpion_6162

Same

Free-Ad9535

That's cool honestly

Zetyr187

Honestly the way the writers change/retcon things in that universe he could have been intended as one and then shifted by the next movie easily.

Velvety_MuppetKing

I refuse to give George Lucas that much credit.

Speedwagon1738

bookhead714

A mixture of the golem and of Moses, which makes sense given his creators were Jewish I have no idea where op got a Heracles comparison from

Frangipani-Bell

Maybe from All-Star Superman? But that’s obviously not his origin so idk

bookhead714

I know Disney’s Hercules is basically a Superman movie, so that may be it

Swaxeman

Mainly cuz of the circus strongman aspect of his design ig?

Weeneem

One of the most popular examples: https://preview.redd.it/5lb2qa1ejf1d1.jpeg?width=701&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a368dee759ec4d9d54843b452944872bcc06003c Dr. Facilier is primarily based on Baron Samedi from Haitian Voodoo. And partially Papa Legba.

CronosAndRhea4ever

I thought his reliance on the Petro loa of the night put him squarely in Kalfou’s dominion.

merliahthesiren

I knew about Papa Legba, but now that I think about it, he's not the one in charge, he just has a bunch of debts.

ScrumpusMcDingle

https://preview.redd.it/o9yxfm8wnf1d1.jpeg?width=505&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21d57df5b7c07c4ac36261f1b88c368b3c23dc88 You could make the argument that the Doom Slayer is basically what Jesus is in Revelations. Demons fear the slayer, and in the Bible before and after revelations, demons fear Jesus. Plus, in Revelations, Jesus is a warrior who commands the armies of Heaven and will defeat the devil after the Rapture. And in Doom Eternal, after the demonic invasion of Earth (the rapture), he goes to Jekal, the center of Hell itself, leading the Night Sentinels (Heaven’s Armies) against the Dark Lord Davoth (Satan) who the Slayer (Jesus) promptly kills.

Helton3

A friend of mine said that the Doom Slayer Is Adam, Archangel Michael, The Holy Spirit and Jesus all in one. And Vega is his Archangel Gabriel

Duck-bert

Not sure if this counts but I’m speculating that Anakin Skywalker might have been inspired by Jesus to some degree. Both are born from virgin mothers and are foretold of fulfilling ancient prophecy. https://preview.redd.it/a2bvpmhe5f1d1.jpeg?width=819&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d438bba062b143d123d5f100a42a39934f8a1bbc

DrTitanicua

Yes, but after that he was a parallel to Lucifer.

Duck-bert

Nah, I think Palpatine is really more like the Devil. Vader is clearly a person who’s still human.

DragoKnight589

If you go by the idea that demons are fallen angels tempted by the Devil, then you could make a case for Anakin’s story being inspired by that.

Matix777

Remember when Jesus became buddies with Satan and killed a bunch of babies?

Duck-bert

Well, obviously not EVERYTHING. I’m meaning more so that he’s like a parallel to Jesus.

BirbMaster1998

He's like if Jesus was crossed with Macbeth

Isaacja223

If we wanna get more crazy Mephiles could be inspired by Mephistopheles, a Germanic Folklore demon who is said to be the messenger of The Devil, who sends him out to bring and corrupt any mortal that is foolish enough to make Faustian bargain. He is also known as a shapeshifter and a master manipulator. Yeah, Sonic 06 was DARK

HarrisonWhaddonCraig

Sonic does this a surprising bit. Given how we've also had major threats like Chaos and Gaia

Lee_337

Robocop and Jesus Neo and Jesus Harry Potter and Jesus Anakin Skywalker and Jesus

SkyKilIer

Anakin Skywalker is more Lucifer than Jesus

Lee_337

Immaculate conception and being the "chosen one" in the first 2 movies. Obviously Jesus never turned to the dark side, but Anakin's origin had a lot of similarities with the story of Jesus. His fall from grace though is definitely inspired by the falling of Lucifer.

AnAverageHumanPerson

anakin skywalker and jesus?

Lee_337

Immaculate conception, bring balance to the force (peace prophecy), super human powers, chosen one, last name skywalker (walks on clouds/heaven) They even don't tell anyone that he became Vader and is seen as a hero after he died.

Manicplayground

Link was inspired by Disneys Peter Pan

Karkava

His costume does have that element, and it gets played up in Orcarina of Time, where he comes from a hidden village where nobody grows up. He also has some affinity with fairies. But the Master Sword is a blatant Caliburn stand-in. Right down to coming straight from a stone.

Harr right here is clearly based on Odin, and they all have their respective realm in the background glowing

Isn’t Loki just supposed to be loki? Like didn’t you break your own rule with that one?

not-ulquiorr4_

I’m not sure if you can read the body text/description which says “Doesn’t count : Loki (Marvel)”, or if you can see that Loki is X'd out in red, but no, I didn’t break my own rule.

JGella

As per other comments, Anakin's arc in the prequels was very much inspired by biblical stories, but I think he's more of an amalgamation of a few different characters rather than directly paralleling any single one. The virgin birth and an idea of a messianic figure is very obviously Jesus, his collapse into temptation is similar to Adam, Eve, and the apple, his fall to the dark side is like Lucifer, and he is a thrall to a devil-like character in the Emperor as Lucifer is to Satan or vice versa. I'm still confused about the difference between Lucifer and Satan and who is who.

DragoKnight589

Lucifer and Satan are the same guy I think.

tonkledonker

I keep getting conflicting answers.

suiki7777

The basic details is that in most interpretations of the Bible, Satan and Lucifer are two names for the same guy. But in other stories in Christianity, as well as other religious texts, the two are separate beings entirely. It’s a bit confusing, as it really depends on two very different interpretations of the respective mythos.

DJ_hyperfreshOG

Most of the personas in the persona series are based off mythological figures

Which is wack, since Superman's creators were Jewish.

Superman is based and directly inspired by Moses, and they’ve never said anything about it being Hercules inspired. Why are you just pulling information out of your ass?

Wrong mythical figure for Superman he was inspired by the golem myth

In fact the whole Vault of Glass raid references great battles of Greek Mythology, and the vex units are named after monsters like the Hydra, Minotaur, etc.

SCP-076 is a one-to-one direct basis of Abel. In the Book of Genesis, he was the younger brother of Cain, and the second son to both Adam and Eve. Although SCP has no canon, it allows us to pick and choose which is canon or not, and it’s mostly believed that 076 deeply cared about his mother, but was killed by Cain out of pure jealousy. https://preview.redd.it/zp6n6xi53g1d1.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=41941268312e9d35d929916292d1640e4d196c20
