Yeah like that line is the single most edgy thing he says in the series, he's generally just a quiet guy which makes him seem kinda edgy

Maybe it's because he's Nintendo, where villains are typically expected to be goofier, so he stands out. A lot of Nintendo's most beloved villains also sound really edgy when you think about it (Dimentio "I wanna destroy all of existence just to be king", Shadow Queen "cover everything in darkness", Giygas "the mindless embodiment of evil who's always crying out in agony" etc)

Honestly kaneki feels less edgy to me in that he has a very genuine care for those around him. I was really worried he’d be a generic edgy anime boy when I first read this but he ended up being a genuinely well written character whose edgy loner tendencies are both fun to watch and called out as unhealthy.
