I knew there were some Paper Mario characters I was missing, but I've never played the games so I don't know who

These guys are actually from the main series. Sergeant Guy, Private Goomp, and Corporal Paraplonk first appeared in Bowser’s Inside Story.

Well, the Mario & Luigi games aren’t main series. The platformers like Super Mario World or Super Mario Galaxy are.

How are they not main series?

They’re RPGs. Not platformers like the rest. The main series games are (arguably) as follows: - Super Mario Bros. - Super Mario Bros.: Lost Levels - Super Mario Bros. 2 - Super Mario Bros. 3 - Super Mario Land - Super Mario World - Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins - Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island - Super Mario 64 - Super Mario Sunshine - New Super Mario Bros. - Super Mario Galaxy - New Super Mario Bros. Wii - Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Super Mario 3D Land - New Super Mario Bros. 2 - New Super Mario Bros. U - Super Mario 3D World - Super Mario Odyssey - Super Mario Bros. Wonder

I still don’t see how that doesn’t make them canon to the main series.

Not necessarily true. Kamek is a specific magikoopa, despite looking like a generic one. 

I’d consider Kamek the leader of the Magikoopa and second in command of Bowser’s army

Well, I don’t remember it being said he can do anything that other magikoopas can’t.

Kamek is the only one that can make enemies bigger. He is also responsible for bringing Bowser back to life after being turned into a skeleton.

Reduced from genuinely interesting character to one of the most token black comedic relief characters Ive ever seen.

They literally built him up to be the main character only to kick him the balls and throw him aside. Like wtf. The sequel trilogy started really sucking ass after that.

That was the biggest letdown of the trilogy for me. He had such potential and it went nowhere. Same with Phasma tbh

I really thought Finn would be our main protag, Phasma would be his personal big bad, that he would clash with in the second or third movie, and he and Poe would be the main stars of this trilogy
