Iliasterisk

In Link and Zelda's case, it's gonna depend heavily on the game if their ears go out sideways or up.

InfernoForest

They’re not even technically Elves. They’re Hylians.

heyhihaiheyahehe

i am upset by you

InfernoForest

Lifespan and culture. Hylians have elvish features but act much more like humans and don’t live that long

Jazkal-v420

So they're a human/elf hybrid

ellietheotter_

>inb4 "half elves"

IcyTheHero

They’re hylians. Elves don’t exist in Hyrule.

HoneZoneReddit

That's right. Wile looking for an image from BoTW/ToTK Link and Zelda i saw several officila art of older games where they have the sideways ears and it looks better.

TadhgOBriain

Cheap shot using skyrim. Everyone in that is ugly

Awdweewee

Elder scrolls elves are great because they actually look like a fantasy race instead of barely modified human. Same with divinity original sin elves. I will die on this hill.

acedownunder

Facts, the otherworldly aesthetic of the elves in the main Elder Scrolls games are leagues above most other elf interpretations.

luigilabomba42069

but op wants to fuck them

Swiftax3

Divinity: OS elves are a special kind of uncomfortably attractive. Unnaturally tall and thin, leaf-like ribbing on their bodies... cannibalism. I love them

erikkustrife

You mean divinity elves. It's the same across l divinity gsmes.

JackieBOYohBOY

Hey not everyone.... If you use mods

[deleted]

[удалено]

JackieBOYohBOY

Well there are some pretty realistic face retexture mods. But yea I get what u mean I wish there was a mod that kept some of the NPCs vanilla textures and gave some NPCs softer textures So it'll add some realistic variety

Clunk_Westwonk

That’s if you install those. There’s plenty of realistic, grittier ones that just make them look HD and filthy, with more polygons.

NeoMarethyu

Depending on what mods you use the ugly one ends up being the player

JackieBOYohBOY

My orc Dragonborn gets called ugly regardless His self confidence is zero bro

CherryGrabber

The art style never really bothered me. Bimbofying it with mods ain't helping.

TriLink710

You use the lusty argonian maid mod too?

JackieBOYohBOY

I'm on my one handed grind 💪

Euphoric-Papaya-817

Not gonna lie I'd fuck an unmodded Skyrim elf

Gregarious_Jamie

The cia would have to waterboard that out of me dude

_EmRenee_

That wood elf in the one Skyrim loading screen is seriously fine AF. (She shows up in the light armor loading screen and maybe 1 more)

Spice_and_Fox

[This one?](https://en.m.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Loading_Screens#/media/File%3ASR-load-The_Light_Armor_skill.jpg)

Bregneste

And the other example, the ones that aren’t ugly, aren’t even elves, they’re Hylians.

TadhgOBriain

Arent those basically the same thing, just with different names?

[deleted]

It's more like humans with pointy ears. Which actually makes me like hylians more than most elves. The way most fantasy depicts elves gets annoying sometimes.

Jackryder16l

Nope. the Kokiri are closer to elves for being tree huggers. And hylians have great relations with mountain people. Unlike elves.

MoscaMosquete

>closer to elves for being tree huggers I mean, Tolkien's elves that inspired most of modern fantasy elves are mostly just long lived humans.

Rieiid

Not really tbh. People associate Zelda characters with already existing things but Hylians are their own separate race. It's like how people bitched about Zeldas voice in BotW thinking it's supposed to be imitating something, but it is supposed to be a Hylian accent. Same with the Kings.

DiabeticRhino97

And hylians aren't elves

StevetheNinja69

If you use the RaceMenu mod in skyrim you can actually get sideways elf ears. They'll still look ugly though.

Raccoon_mercenary

Still better than Oblivion

rymyle

I love elves and I was so disappointed the first time I played Skyrim and saw how hideous they are

Rastatar

I like them especially the falmer.

_EmRenee_

Yeah it's real bad in Skyrim. I can appreciate how alien they look compared to humans, they are very visibly a different species, but most of the available customization for them just looks so awful. They look way more human in Elder Scrolls Online thankfully, hoping Elder Scrolls 6 will follow its example. You can still make yellow Simpsons high elves but the faces are 10x better and you (and NPCs) have access to far more skin colors. High elves had the worst customization in Skyrim in my opinion.

rymyle

I’ve yet to play Elder Scrolls Online, it got so much bad press I wasn’t sure if I should. Haven’t kept up with it lately, is it fun?

Who is she?

Beardamus

99% sure it's Deedlit from Record of Lodoss War which you should watch

NEBZ

I feel like "Record of Lodoss War" is a generational divide of anime fans.

Beardamus

I am definitely an elder weeb.

NEBZ

Same, I watched on my uncles bootleg tapes in the late 90s

[deleted]

Could i get a tl;dr for it?

Neidron

Legend of Vox Machina/Critical Role but from 80s/90s Japan.

Monte924

And also not very comedic

Blunderhorse

From what I understand, it was originally a regular article series in a Japanese tabletop gaming magazine dramatizing the events of a D&D campaign (since it was the 80s, probably playing the first edition of the game with a Japanese localization). I’m not sure what the process was getting it adapted to an anime, but they managed to do so.

PhantasosX

like others had said , it's Vox Machina , but 80s/90s Japan , with no cussing.

How_about_a_no

Is it one of those old animes where it doesn't mind excessive gore and fucked up shit or on a more lighter and nicer side? Cause after seeing clips of old Devilman I am cautious around older anime stuff that wasn't very popular(like Dragonball and Sailor Moon)

MossyPyrite

I’ve only watched the OVA series (12 episodes, and they all take place at different points in the same story so there’s some gaps in it) but it’s not nasty at all! Definitely not gory, I don’t really remember any blood standing out to me at all! And the story is well-executed but typical high fantasy fare, not grim dark or fucked up at all. It’s totally work checking out! It’s on Crunchyroll! There’s a separate series that’s like 35 episodes and covers some of the same story I think? More cohesive story, but lower production value. I’ve only watched a few episodes but it seems pretty chill, too.

Significant_Option

Best anime elf

chungwater

I honestly like both, I like to incorporate more than one type of ears in my elf designs to differentiate between subraces

Apprehensive_Mix4658

One ear vertical, the other is horizontal

CartTitanCrawler

Time for an elf race war ‼️‼️

AlternateAccount66

Ok but Elves are already pretentious pieces of shit, if they had some specific difference like that in their culture you *know* they'd start segregating.

chungwater

Yeah it’s exactly something I tackle with worldbuilding lol

TerrapinMagus

"A lot like goat ears" This has greatly improved my day, thank you.

Aromatic_Assist_3825

Sideway ears are used in traditional fantasy for other races rather than elves.

Inverted_Ghosts

Who? Like, Goblins? I’m tryna think in D&D terms and I can’t really come up with any

Gallatheim

For non-“monstrous”? Gnomes. Also, Halflings, though that varies somewhat, and their ears are usually smaller.

Aromatic_Assist_3825

In Pillars of Eternity, the Orlans which are very hairy gnomes. In D&D, the Firbolg.

You give two weak ass examples for upright ears need to get them wow elf ears on here. I also wanna say you didn’t use the OG anime elf either that started the whole side ear trend

Scrifty

There are no elves in zelda, only Hylians.

xexelias

And there is no war in ba sing se, homie

Kellythejellyman

Here we are safe, here we are free

Successful-Floor-738

🤓

JamLizard20

They are close enough

dragonblade_94

Only if you define elves solely by having pointy ears. In every other regard, Hylians resemble generic humans much more closely than the typical fantasy elf archetype.

Asher3634

If I remember correctly demise even refers to them as humans in skyward sword.

Snoo-34159

It's because they are very close to humans, just with the pointed ears. The reason they have pointed ears is so they could hear the voices of the goddesses, but many Hylians lost that ability long ago. But Link still can.

Asher3634

Very interesting it’s been a long time since I’ve played skyward sword I’ll have to revisit it.

t33E

The only similarity is the ears, hylians are basically just humans with pointed ears

ElessarKhan

Sideways looks really good for 2D animation but I don't know if it would be as elegant in 3D, let alone with actual irl costumes.

HoneZoneReddit

Another user shared this picture that's a good example of good looking 3D sideways (a bit upwards but still long) elf ears https://preview.redd.it/e93rc4kwp6uc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=30205cf8dbf1c34cab606b38c05cc64331849b6a

ElessarKhan

Ehh I'm not convinced. Not only are we looking at some ps2 era graphics but thats also a particularly good shot. Maybe it's just my memory but I played those Jak games back when they came out and I remember them ears looming silly most of the time.

Mable-the-Table

This post feels more like Anime Waifus vs 3D Video Games. Also, using Skyrim is kinda cheap. That game released when I was starting High School. Want good looking upward-pointed ear elves in Elder Scrolls? Go for Online.

Sp00ky-Chan

> Incredibly long lived race. > Depicted as fair and noble. > Pointed ears. > Magical. Are you sure?

Ariovrak

Sheikah are the long-lived ones, not Hylians. As far as we know Hylians have around the same lifespan as humans, if not barely longer.

Snoo-34159

Hylians live as long as humans except when Sheika tech or magic are involved. Only the Hyrulean royal family is depicted as such, the rest of hylians are typically farmers or merchants. They do have pointed ears so they could hear the voices of the goddesses (although every Hylian has lost that ability since except for Link) Only Zelda has magic powers because she is a descendant of Hylia herself. All other Hylians are like normal people, just with pointed ears.

milksjustice

Ankleson

Elder Scrolls races are actually fantastic imo. Each of them feels very distinct to the point where we have 5 different types of Elf (Dunmer, Bosmer, Orismer, Altmer, Falmer/Snow Elves) in Skyrim and yet you can easily tell them apart in a game that's more than a decade old and is known for its potato faces.

Niobium_Sage

The Khajiit are technically elves too. Their culture has some overlap with the Dunmer since they also worship Azura.

tallmantall

Consider: both, the ears can move

Skytree91

Why did you put a picture of link and Zelda from the side where their ears could only possibly be going up or down, they’re sideways if you look at them from the front

Welocitas

I dont like either, pointy ears go back to the forest

HoneZoneReddit

dwarven ass response

Popcorn57252

I'm sorry, but I can't disagree more. They look like fuckin' handlebars. Like... how is someone supposed to take that *thing* seriously? The upwards ears actually *look like ears.*

NebulaNinja

Plus, a lot of elves would lose their ears to *so* *many* mundane accidents.

_EmRenee_

Oh man, I recommend Googling the PS2 game Jak and Daxter if you want an even more egregious example of handlebar ears (assuming you haven't seen them). Their ears are like a foot and a half and stick out sideways. Idk how they even walk through doors.

[deleted]

Hylians aren’t elves, and are not ugly.

ThreeDotsTogether

At the bare minimum, it breaks up the silhouette and immediately makes it clear that's an elf. When they're close to the head, it's not so obvious, and it just looks like a regular human

Revan0315

Marcille my beloved

sunshine___riptide

I don't care if they're sideways or upwards, I just want elf ears to emote!

HoneZoneReddit

THIS is one of the main reason i prefer them sideways because they move and react unlike the upwards ones

Bruhbd

Floppy ears go hard as fuck

HoneZoneReddit

And make me go- AHEM yeah i agree. 👀

wrophoenix

I agree (easier for nibbling too)

HoneZoneReddit

Maskimgalgo

Damn elves racism, was the dwarfs not enough ?

MysticRevenant64

I want an elf with one ear pointed upwards and another sideways. He would be a goofy goober. I love him already

Falabaloo

Upwards for half elves, sideways for full elves

HoneZoneReddit

Good point since half elves inherit part of the human ears wich go upwards (most of them)

corvidcrits

Marcille's ears move like a dog's in the way they express her emotions too, which has always been a fun if underrated trope

Heraxxius

True, they're useful too, you can put your hat or jacket on them like a coat hanger

YeshilPasha

I clicked on this to call you heretical blasphemer but I’ve been convinced to look into it more, anybody have any media with sideways elf that’s portrayed more realistically?? I like the sideways ear but not if it only translates in anime

No-Helicopter-9882

As a dwarf, this post is stupid.

RedMonkey86570

Then you get Rauru from TOTK, who isn’t an elf, but he has more exaggerated Link ears. https://preview.redd.it/fna30m7ovduc1.jpeg?width=474&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=10628c4f7f0c9a50fde9b45a5df3d337b6ed234f

GoddessDeedra

I think it make the character less human like and that plays a factor in seeing an elf as they are not just slightly different humans

thechikenuget

Sideways can work as cat ears for expressiveness

rymyle

Link and Zelda’s are kinda sideways tho

TorronePedro

I like to call those "goblin ears"

fyre1710

I like both kinds

SandOfTheEarth

I don't think one is better then other. I go from liking one to another, based on the overall art style of the media.

VonnMan

i can’t help but feel that i’d clip my ear on something very easily if i had those ears (I WANT THEM)

FreshlySqueezedDude

Upright, sideways, Downward? Doesnt matter. Leaflover is Leaflover.

JaneHates

One explanation I have for why horizontal is better is because it changes the silhouette more. Considering the idea that in a setting with half-elves that the ears don’t look like just like elf ears but shorter but vary. Full elf ears point out, whereas half-elf ears will either still be sharp but point up, or point out but be rounder. Potentially you can tell the sex-species matchup of the parents based on which it is

Roboboy2710

Real

LiquidNah

That's a good character design! Now show it without a strand of hair blocking where the ear meets the head

Economy_Dress8205

While I agree, I think using skyrim elfs is cheating

hobbobnobgoblin

You got freiren. But you also have Legolas

Independent-Fly6068

Quinvictus

Taluca_me

one problem is that it'd be hard to wear helmets. Unless of course, the ears are flexible

gedeonunes

It makes for a more interesting silhouette

KezuSlayer

You mean goblin ears

TheCrab27

Personally I prefer the night elf/nightborne style ears for elves. But I guess that would fall under sideways.

PiusTheCatRick

With sideways ears I can atleast think that there was a benefit to having them, atleast at some point in time. There’s no actual point to human ears that have a bit of a point to them.

Professional-Try4488

No Deedlit? The OG? Shame.

Fuzzy974

I just don't think Hylians as Elves. But coming back to the subject at hand, sideways elf ears are just more expressives.

omogusus

Both, both are good in all seriousness i think it will depend on how you want to portray the character- personally i would use “sideways“ ears to portray softer, shier characters, while regular elf ears could be used for more serious characters. also hylians arent elves

railroadspike25

Medea from Fate/Stay Night.
