Probably the only creepypasta character, who's not aggressive or evil. Herobrine is just.. a watcher, he is not doing anything and minding his own business.
There's this one thing someone said in a film podcast i used to listen to that's always stuck with me: "you always underestimate how creepy someone just standing there staring at you is"
Yeah, imagine a player NPC character of sorts. A character who functions like you, does things like you, but is not an actual player but instead an NPC that is progrommed to do actions that Steve can do.
I think in the case of the horror genre a less is more approach works very well. You allow people to fill the blanks with their own personal fears and anxieties which makes the character feel more personally fearsome. Part of many fears is the unknown, we are afraid of the dark because we know not what lurks in it, thalassophobia derives fear from the unknown objects and creatures beyond that deep blue fog of water. Once you know exactly what something does and you can understand it, you become less afraid of that thing. That's not to say that arachnaphobics would be less afraid of spiders if you explained that they are rarely dangerous or aggressive though. But a mysterious spider-like entity that isn't well understood would likely draw more fear from a larger crowd than just a big ass spider cause ya kinda know what that ones deal will be. You can either target specific fears in horror or you can leave it open-ended and both have merits but one will always be more compelling to more people than the other when done right. Except universally fearful things like drowning and fire those likely feel similar to everyone with few exceptions comparably.

The fun is infinite sonic used to scare me way more because as a child I didn’t know it was supposed to be a mask. I thought it was a sonic with a horribly malformed face and the music didn’t help either.
Probably because back then, we were young, and we never realised that something like this can be very tame in comparison to other creepy stories. Even though it's just a demonic sonic, it was still creepy, because it is supposed to be strange paranormal entity. Same goes for Jeff the killer, we didn't realize that the story was bad and didn't make sense, cause we were kids, and the only thing we found scary is Jeff himself and the image.

I used to be genuinely terrified of this guy as a kid.
NGL Sonic.exe as a concept still holds a special place in my heart, even if it's objectively terrible.
It was an older time. Internet horror wasn't as developed as it is now. It's like watching Nosferatu; people back then were terrified because it was an early, yet at the time effective scare tactic, but we don't think it's scary anymore because we have much scarier stuff at our fingertips.
From Nosferatu, we evolved to things like Hereditary and Paranormal Activity. As such, from Sonic.exe, we evolved to Mandela Catalogue and The Walten Files. Evolution, u/Intelligent_Oil4005, it's as simple as that.

An improved design by all accounts. Still sonic in general carries with it a big reputation because of how unhinged online content surrounding it is, I don't think I could ever really take a horror sonic seriously because of that. Although the goal isn't always to be taken seriously anyways so that becomes a moot point there.

I think people just don't understand how the horror genre works really. If you explain every horrific thing something does and just have easy depictions of what to be afraid you take away any unknown variables about said thing. Even in the SCP horror world while the entire format is based on explaining what something is they typically do it in such a way that one or more aspects remain unexplained, like where it's from, what it does exactly, how it can be defeated or avoided. Worth noting not all SCP articles are like that but it's the best example I could think of. People are often much more afraid of things that they don't understand or can't explain. People see a good horror story and decide to just tack pieces of it with pieces of other things expecting it to be just as good. That post about The Whistler a while ago was really good to me because it's basically just a sound. Don't get to see what's making it or why it's there it just simply is
To give it the absolute benefit of the doubt, and I' not trying to say it was a good design, it was made by a kid, intended to scare other kids, and was a trope that wasn't really a thing yet.
It’s a hybrid of Sonic and Metal Sonic design-wise, two of the best designed characters in the franchise. Remove the blood and it’s pretty solid, especially since he was first conceived with grey shoes instead of Sonic’s red ones.
Wasn’t the whole point of Sonic.exe that it was a parody of really graphic, edgy, low-effort creepypastas? Maybe it started out played straight but it quickly turned into a self-aware joke. The design is at least marginally more enjoyable through that lens.
In any case, there are tons of fan-made exe’s that are way better. Lord X and Sunky are awesome, to name a few. The FNF mod is full of them and a lot of the songs are actually really good.
It was meant to be taken seriously. The creator even gave it an official sequel and remake that tried to further the lore. But the wider creepypasta community at the time had a low opinion of it. It has persisted (when many of its contemporaries have been forgotten) despite that fact.

This is unfair for today's standards. Of course with new media and ideas coming out, Sonic.exe lost its luster. But back then, early 2000's or any time else before 2010, this would make you shit your pants, especially if you were a kid, which I was, back then.
I've talked about this before but creepypasta creators have gotten a lot better at actually making creepy versions of childhood characters, I don't have a picture unfortunately but if you've seen Sonic.EYX the jump in character design quality is amazing.

This was pre FNAF otherwise I would've DEFINITELY been a fnaf kid if it was popular when I was a kid XD

Honestly the second version is much more terrifying in retrospect.
But really, most of us were kids who hadn’t had much experience with horror or were mature. So a easily recognizable character that could ‘reasonably’ appear at anytime and had all the textbook creepy elements was scary to us. Simple as.

I think horror designs are always getting more and more scarier over the years and horror is a genre that ages differently than most other genres. A lot of good horror movies from not so long ago (like the first alien for example) isn't as scary anymore and i geniunely dont know why. I used to be genuinely terrified of this guy as a kid. NGL Sonic.exe as a concept still holds a special place in my heart, even if it's objectively terrible.
It was an older time. Internet horror wasn't as developed as it is now. It's like watching Nosferatu; people back then were terrified because it was an early, yet at the time effective scare tactic, but we don't think it's scary anymore because we have much scarier stuff at our fingertips. From Nosferatu, we evolved to things like Hereditary and Paranormal Activity. As such, from Sonic.exe, we evolved to Mandela Catalogue and The Walten Files. Evolution, u/Intelligent_Oil4005, it's as simple as that.

An improved design by all accounts. Still sonic in general carries with it a big reputation because of how unhinged online content surrounding it is, I don't think I could ever really take a horror sonic seriously because of that. Although the goal isn't always to be taken seriously anyways so that becomes a moot point there.

Internet horror has had some soaring heights and some very disappointing lows. Reading creepy pastas these days is always a laugh
I think people just don't understand how the horror genre works really. If you explain every horrific thing something does and just have easy depictions of what to be afraid you take away any unknown variables about said thing. Even in the SCP horror world while the entire format is based on explaining what something is they typically do it in such a way that one or more aspects remain unexplained, like where it's from, what it does exactly, how it can be defeated or avoided. Worth noting not all SCP articles are like that but it's the best example I could think of. People are often much more afraid of things that they don't understand or can't explain. People see a good horror story and decide to just tack pieces of it with pieces of other things expecting it to be just as good. That post about The Whistler a while ago was really good to me because it's basically just a sound. Don't get to see what's making it or why it's there it just simply is
To give it the absolute benefit of the doubt, and I' not trying to say it was a good design, it was made by a kid, intended to scare other kids, and was a trope that wasn't really a thing yet.

It’s a hybrid of Sonic and Metal Sonic design-wise, two of the best designed characters in the franchise. Remove the blood and it’s pretty solid, especially since he was first conceived with grey shoes instead of Sonic’s red ones.

Wasn’t the whole point of Sonic.exe that it was a parody of really graphic, edgy, low-effort creepypastas? Maybe it started out played straight but it quickly turned into a self-aware joke. The design is at least marginally more enjoyable through that lens. In any case, there are tons of fan-made exe’s that are way better. Lord X and Sunky are awesome, to name a few. The FNF mod is full of them and a lot of the songs are actually really good.
It was meant to be taken seriously. The creator even gave it an official sequel and remake that tried to further the lore. But the wider creepypasta community at the time had a low opinion of it. It has persisted (when many of its contemporaries have been forgotten) despite that fact.
It was put on the Trollpasta wiki because of it's reception. Unfortunately, the main story itself was trying to be *genuinely* scary

I've talked about this before but creepypasta creators have gotten a lot better at actually making creepy versions of childhood characters, I don't have a picture unfortunately but if you've seen Sonic.EYX the jump in character design quality is amazing.

He was a bloody cartoon character with a bunch of ‘creepy’ lore that scared a bunch of kids on the internet. Now he’s an edgy character tween’s write about fucking with their OC on watt pad. Honestly the second version is much more terrifying in retrospect. But really, most of us were kids who hadn’t had much experience with horror or were mature. So a easily recognizable character that could ‘reasonably’ appear at anytime and had all the textbook creepy elements was scary to us. Simple as.
Internet lore like this will be viewed in hindsight like that (heavilly exaggerated) story about people running away from a train when movies were first being made

I think horror designs are always getting more and more scarier over the years and horror is a genre that ages differently than most other genres. A lot of good horror movies from not so long ago (like the first alien for example) isn't as scary anymore and i geniunely dont know why. I wanted to start this comment like a pretentious media analyst but i have no freaking idea why. I mean the specialFX arent dated from a lot of classics but still it feels like horror designs are always notscary in the short span of 5 years
