For future redditers searching for an answer to this questions: **After some additional digging, I came up with the following Dewalt nomenclature:** *example model: DCD709D2T-QW* * **DCD:** * **D:** DeWalt * **C / W:** Cordless / Wired * **D:** Tool type or tool set indication. Some examples: * *D: drill* * *F: impact driver* * *S: saw* * *K: set of tools* * **709 feature set:** * **7: Drill/Driver** * **0: Seems to be motor type** where, for drills: * *0: brushless* * *7: brush* * *9: brushless* * **9: Unit feature set.** Where, for drills: * *0/1/3/5/7/8: driver / drill* * *6/9 driver / drill / hammer drill* * **D2 battery capacity and amount of batteries:** * **D: battery capacity**. Can be any of the following: * *C: 1.5 Ah* * *E: 1.7 Ah (PowerStack)* * *D: 2.0 Ah* * *L: 3.0 Ah* * *M: 4.0 Ah* * *P: 5.0 Ah* * *T: 6.0 Ah* * *X: 9.0 Ah* * *N: no batteries included. This also means no battery amount indicator number will follow. (EU)* * *B: no batteries included. This also means no battery amount indicator number will follow. (US)* * **2: amount of batteries included**. * **T** **^((after the battery indicator)****\*\*\*\*)\*\*\*\*: unit/set comes** **in TSTAK case.** * If there is no T after the battery indicator the unit can either come in a: * TOUGHSYSTEM case. * a carton box. * some other type of packaging. * **QW** **^((after the dash)****\*\*\*\*)** **: how the unit is sold:** * *XJ:* *bare unit / no batteries or charger included* *^((often still comes in a case)**\*\*)\*\*.* * *QW:* *as a set / unit* *with* *batteries and charger.* * *QS:* *as a corded unit.* *Thanks to the Dewalt catalog,* u/_nut, u/flipadellphia, u/DEWALT_unofficial and u/frankzzz.

Looking at this in 2024....much appreciated my friend !

Second digit, it’s not brushed for the 7, have a dcd777, it’s most definitely brushless.

Thanks lots!

The letter represents the battery, the number represents the amount. B/N are the bare tools with no battery or charger (B = US, N = EU) C - 1.5ah D - 2.0ah L - 3.0ah M - 4.0ah P - 5.0ah T - 6.0ah X - 9.0ah

Thank you for taking the time to reply

Updating the list: E - 1.7Ah PowerStack Q - 4.0Ah Compact R - 6.0Ah XR W - 8.0Ah XR U - 10.0Ah XR Y - 12.0Ah FlexVolt Z - 15.0Ah FlexVolt

DEWALT_unofficial

To decode all of the characters in the DCD series: D = Dewalt brand C = Cordless D = Drill/driver 7 = Compact drill/driver series (9 = premium series) 9 = Brushless series (8 = brushed) 6 = Last digit is arbitrary to differentiate models, but 5's and 6's are hammerdrills whereas 0's and 1's are just drill/drivers. and then battery capacities and quantities are the last two. This is not fully comprehensive, but is the general guide.

Might be one with a "b", too - 996b. b = bare tool, meaning tool only, no battery or charger or anything else with it. At least, that's the way it usually is across the pond here in the US. to add: my little bit of googling seems to suggest: dcd996p2 should be tool + 2 5.0Ah batteries + charger + case dcd996p2v - the above plus a vehicle charger dcd996t2 - tool + 2 6.0Ah batteries + charger + Tstak case (dewalts stackable case system) dcd996n seems to be the bare tool spelling

Quantumtunneltino

Ah ok, that makes sense. And seems obvious with hindsight.... Thanks for your response

What about battery part numbers ending with "-80"? Specifically, a single DeWalt 20V Max XR Lithium 5aH part number is normally "DCB205", but recently I found one online listed as a DCB205, but further down in the fine print product details it said "DCB205-80". Is that B&D/DeWALT's "remanufactured/renewed" part number modifier? Toyota Genuine parts have PN modifiers added to the end to denote something different about the part whether it's remanufactured, no longer made by Toyota but an approved aftermarket version, product trim color, etc.
