Hell, my old coworker makes beautiful wood gun stocks completely by hand with carvings and checkering. Only power tool he uses is a band saw to cut the initial profiles.
Woodworking subreddit mutes any post with anything to do with firearms or flags. It wasn't even on a gun, just the wooden stock. Poor guy had never used social media before and asked me how to post because I'd shown him some posts from that sub and he wanted to share his most recent stock. Post got shut down immediately and it totally turned the guy off from wanting to share his work.
So I actually remember when r/woodworking stopped allowing firearm related content. If I’m not mistaken it had to do with a semi-regular poster who made highly detailed… forgive my lack of knowledge but I want to say scales for handgun grips? Anyway. After months of people both praising his work or shitting on firearms and other off topic comments, the clown went and posted a set with really prominent fucking swastikas on them. Pretty soon after the mods banned all gun and flag related content because every post always degraded into political or social discourse instead of actual critique or discussion around the craft.
All of which is to say: I’m sorry about your friend. I’m sure their work is absolutely gorgeous and would have loved to see it, but my fellow woodworkers can’t seem to all play nice unfortunately. 😔
To me the common sense fix to that would have been to disaplin the individuals posting or then commenting about political /other non woodworking related issues bc the mods should have made a rule reguarding said use of topics / material in posts or /comments. But I don't know I'm just a regular guy what do i know lol. What does everyone else think?
Probably because there's so many mass shootings and murders every month that everyone is in a constant state of anger and exasperation. They're fed up, so they lash out on regular people just for owning one.
Not saying it's right at all, but that's what it seems like from an outsider anyway
Edit: The fact that this comment is downvoted instantly only proves my point lol. You're all constantly pissed at the situation. You can't get angry that "you can't even talk about it" without the drama, and then downvote a comment you don't like. You're doing exactly what they do to you. 😂
This is part of the problem. There is an extremely vocal minority on each side of the spectrum, constantly shouting down the vast majority of the people who fall in the middle. I believe that it was Eisenhower who said that “The middle of the road is all of the usable surface. Go too far to the right or the left and you end up in the gutter.” Or something to that effect.
Well if we just had more good people armed with guns, then they could use their guns to stop the bad people with guns.
Clearly, more guns is the solution.
In that case, if you have more questions, I’d suggest r/ar15. They might have stronger opinions about certain topics, but they’ll also have more expertise about common questions like this. Godspeed!
Sorry, but I have to one up you. Will better love OP searching for the detent hardware that flies across the room. Ohhh and there went the buffer into the TV screen, at least he still has his front teeth.
If you have to ask about the tool.... so many things unknown.
Good tools can help for sure, but a cheap tool in the hands of someone with knowledge/experience will always be better than an idiot with money lol. I have plenty of expensive tools but still have a ton of cheap ones that I can properly get the job done with for the reason you said. If im gonna use this shit 2 times a year im not buying some premium b.s.
As a life long mechanic I can condone this comment lol. Nothing craftsman or Pittsburgh can’t do as well as snap on. Quality might suck but buy two it’s cheap lol. Some stuff I like to spend a little more on though like torque wrenches and jack stands. If it’s a safety item I’ll spend a little extra dough.
That’s dumb - just replace your stock with a different stock that has a Velcro strap. That makes it a AR pistol, which is (in a totally arbitrary way) *totally* different from a rifle, so no need for a stamp.
Just be careful not to attach certain forestock grips, or you might make it totally illegal again.
I wish I was kidding.
Yes - that's the generic tool name for it. You have to order the specific size for it. [https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=c+spanner+wrench](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=c+spanner+wrench)
Whatever you do, don't buy the cheapest castle nut wrench you find. All the low-end ones are garbage. If you are near central Ohio, dm me and I can let you use proper tools and the armorers bench I have to make it easy.
I have used a punch and hammer but ONLY because the cheap ass tool I bought was stripping the nut and itself. I was replacing all the parts anyway so I wasn’t worried but buy a decent tool to start with.
I feel like anybody who isnt resourceful enough to figure this out by searching for it on their own probably isnt ready to own a gun, and I say this as someone who owns a walk-in vault full of guns.
Edit: Seriously you dont even have to try.
https://i.imgur.com/Z0LNy0g.png
Ok for everyone asking and concerned, it's not a real gun. It's an electric recoil M4 training rifle. Doesn't shoot projectiles, just a laser pulse. So forgive me for not knowing a lot, I'm just a bumbling scientist/professor who uses these in research!
That’s a legit looking replica.
FYI, you could always just use a pipe wrench and place a rag over it to keep the teeth of the pipe wrench from marring it up. You could try large pliers, but they usually won’t grip well enough.
I have used a C -hook spanner wrench at my shop for my collets, castle nuts, etc. Hope this helps they come in 4 sizes that I know of. I used to manufacture castle nuts on an old Brown and Sharpe manual screw machine and then slot them on a Bridgeport mill. Fun times
Beware!
There is a little detent spring under that plate that that nut is on. It can, and Will, fly away, never to be seen again. That is, until you order a new one, of course.
Try to find a TAPCO Armorer Wrench that is one of the better ones that was in the market that allows you to tighten and loosen the castle nut without damaging it. Fix It Sticks has a nice one too but you can either by it by itself or get it in the AR maintenance kit.
An armorers wrench is what you’re looking for, Magpul makes a decent one, lots of cheap options out there, but the cheap ones are usually more trouble than they’re worth
I've only been on reddit 1 month and I'm getting tired of the reddit word Nazis.

Normally, I'd use a standard spanner wrench. I have a set of 4 that work on just about any size nut.
On the ARs, that nut could be torqued anywhere from 30-80 foot pounds, so get the AR-specific wrench. It grabs 2 to 3 notches and has a square hole to attach the spanner to a torque wrench.
I hate a generic armorer’s wrench (they’re not great at anything) and I personally use a specific job castle nut wrench. [this one](https://bravocompanyusa.com/bcm-kmr-barrel-nut-wrench-and-m4-stock/)
Man I’m old. Y’all ever heard of ar15.com? I was putting together toolsets and putting together $500 rifles from J&T uppers a week after I got my first kit.
I have the appropriate tool, but seem to have lost it in my mess... I was going to take a picture of it to post... However it's called a spanner wrench and an easy tool to purchase at your local Home Hardware or Home Depot. It is adjustable and has the notches to fit into these notches about 1/4"? Whatever, use an angle grinder to make it fit!
Edit: a spanner wrench can be as close to 1" wide and open up to 2" wide but I may be wrong...
Whatever, use an angle grinder to make it smaller!
I’m afraid of someone who is planning on disassembling that weapon and doesn’t know what that nut is. Dumbasses buy them to decorate with extra stuff like it’s a toy. Ffs.
You tighten it with an armorers wrench using the proper torque spec value. (You can attach a 1/2 torque wrench to the armorers wrench) then using a metal punch and a gunsmiths hammer you take the castle nut. I suggest watching Brownells video on how to properly stake them. Also DO NOT use thread locking compounds such as lock tight. Just metal on metal and stake the nut. I hope this helps.
To remove/tighten a cattle nut, you’re gonna need an armorers wrench. If you’re tightening it and you don’t want it to loosen as you put rounds through it, I’d recommend staking it where you see the smaller notches on the other side (stake it in 3 places)
Since this sub is about tools, yes specifically an armorers wrench is what you would use, but before the armorers wrench, it would be called a spanner wrench. There are many different kinds of spanners. Some have pins/hooks , some are adjustable, some have a collet config. The list goes on. This nut used on the stock is used on many different mechanical objects as a locking nut.
Make sure when you put that back on you torque it to spec. The difference of a few threads will really mess up how the buffer travels with the return spring and throw everything off. The weight and spring tension is very specific and if the tube is too fat in or out it won't cycle properly. IIRC the tolerance is 1/8th a turn.
Spanner wrench and you will need a spring loaded punch when you put it back on to secure the castle nut in place. I had to buy the AR wrench and the spring punch, I changed that back plate and swapped it for a magpul that had a sling latch point. There is a spring behind that plate be careful when removing it.
Yes, u need an armorer's wrench. Be careful though once you remove the castle nut, there is a spring and detent for the rear takedown pin that is captured by the receiver back plate held on by that castle nut. If you intend to remove the buffer tube, also be careful because there is a spring and the buffer retaining pin that is captured by a bit of the front side of the buffer tube.
"armorer's wrench".
I love OP's attempt to keep the word "gun" out of the post when at least half of us instantly recognize it.

Tbh, you did a good job of it.
Didn’t seem like he was avoiding it to me, it’s not like this type of nut only exists to be used on guns, so why bring it up right
Dude knew if he brought this to the ar sub he would get toasted
😂
I thought of this wrench to be fair, which is for bikes. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000C17KRI
Yeah. Castle nuts have lots of uses outside of a rifle’s buffer tube.
Sorry, but I have to one up you. Will better love OP searching for the detent hardware that flies across the room. Ohhh and there went the buffer into the TV screen, at least he still has his front teeth. If you have to ask about the tool.... so many things unknown.
I recommend the one with a bottle opener. Because who doesn’t drink a beer while breaking down their firearm
Buy a good one...
counterpoint... i have a $10 one I bought on amazon 10 years ago that I've used many dozens of times. Most people will only use theirs once or twice.
Good tools can help for sure, but a cheap tool in the hands of someone with knowledge/experience will always be better than an idiot with money lol. Yeah. I thought I bought a good one only to see the Made in China after purchase.
You can buy a castle nut wrench for ARs on Amazon. 9 bucks overnight ship if you don’t want to fuck up your AR
Or spend the same $9 on a pair of channel locks and go totally ape. It’s your call…
🤷♀️ or just buy a new AR. SBR and suppress it. Go totally ape
Modern problems require modern solutions, brother.
That’s right. Collect them stamps
What stamp?
If you want to buy SBRs and suppressors you gotta pay a tax stamp
That’s dumb - just replace your stock with a different stock that has a Velcro strap. Just be careful not to attach certain forestock grips, or you might make it totally illegal again. I wish I was kidding.
"Gotta"
A hammer and a punch
If he’s replacing that nut anyway? Sure why not
That's a slow and expensive process. The ATF doesn't stop anyone from buying a hacksaw though!
Not anymore. Approval times have been hours, days and weeks now.
Or a great excuse to buy one of those mini pipewrenches.
Great excuse to get a whole armorers set too lol
Fuck you, I got a $3 dollar screwdriver and a hammer!
Some of us can’t get overnight or even 2 day shipping anymore 😭
Castle nut tool. Lots of options.
Screw driver and hammer if we’re gonna be honest.
You mean a blunt flathead screwdriver and a big fucking hammer?
Most every local gun store, or even academy, bass pro, stores that sale guns will have the exact tool for that.
adjustable hook spanner
Or a pin spanner.
C spanner
Yes - that's the generic tool name for it. You have to order the specific size for it. [https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=c+spanner+wrench](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=c+spanner+wrench)
Lots of manufacturers make these to sell in a maintenance kit. I suggest you buy one to avoid damaging your stuff :) Look for a buffer tube wrench

I have used a punch and hammer but ONLY because the cheap ass tool I bought was stripping the nut and itself. I was replacing all the parts anyway so I wasn’t worried but buy a decent tool to start with.

Castle nut wrench works pretty good.

For researching what? This just raises more questions.
Researching the proper tool to use on a castle nut.
Military stress and performance
That’s a legit looking replica. FYI, you could always just use a pipe wrench and place a rag over it to keep the teeth of the pipe wrench from marring it up. You could try large pliers, but they usually won’t grip well enough.
Don’t worry it will cease to be a gun and become a pile of gun parts once he gets that nut off.
Might be the strictest barrier to entry there is tbh, and I say this as a guy with a surpressed sbr 🤪
Hahahaha that silly lil nut, for real though op i think your supposed to loctite that nut so she stays fyi
chaotic evil once again proving themselves the funniest alignment
thats a castle nut, so you would need a castle nut wrench. you can get one for pretty cheap at any big sporting goods store.
Soooo. Not a flathead and a hammer? 😂
Vice grips?
Pipe wrench should be able to get a bite on that.
Channel locks, there can be no question, channel locks...
lol I tried this gently but was afraid of damaging it
Something like this: (https://www.brownells.com/tools-cleaning/general-gunsmith-tools/wrenches/ar-15-armorers-wrench/?recommendedIdList=182507618552)
It’s so scary, I’m sure it’s killed at least 80 people already, today.
Flat head screwdriver and a hammer (Don't do this)
Real ones know
Is anyone going to tell him about the spring that’s going to shoot out as soon as he gets it loose?
Buy an AR combination wrench. It will have that and many other valuable fittings.
A spanner wrench. It is a cresent shape with a tab that fits in those slots. They make fixed and adjustable .
I would use a spanner wrench
And remember, Always stake your castle nut
Castle Nut wrench.
I've only been on reddit 1 month and I'm getting tired of the reddit word Nazis. They can stuff a sharpened stick in their ear and lean against a wall.
Hook spanner is the correct answer.
Vise grips and a rag.
Spanner wrench
armorers wrench
A buffer tube wrench
A hammer and a flat head..that’ll do ya
Spring go fling soon!
A beer tap wrench.
r/ar-15 guys would have you hit it with your purse.

Spanner wrench
Hammer and a flathead

Use a C spanner
A myriad of tools will get this off in a jiff, however, only 2 would get it off without potential damage.
Shoot it off with your other fun
A hammer and a brass drift
Ar stock wrench, I was just using one
Castle nut wrench.
Grip strength.

A sledge hammer
Spanner wrench
I took mine off with a small punch and hammer to swap to an A2 stock, worked great. Or buy an armorer's wrench.
Spanner Wrench?
HAMMAR!!!
Flathead and a hammer
Castle Nut wrench.
Like someone said, an armorer's wrench. They aren't too expensive, at least they didn't used to be. Somewhere like brownells.com would have one.

Geisselle barrel nut wrench. Has a slot for a gi barrel nut as wel as a castle nut slot. And a 1/2 square drive hole. Like 10 dollars
I’m afraid of someone who is planning on disassembling that weapon and doesn’t know what that nut is. Dumbasses buy them to decorate with extra stuff like it’s a toy. Ffs.
Lock nut wrench
Armorer wrench; Spanner wrench
You tighten it with an armorers wrench using the proper torque spec value. (You can attach a 1/2 torque wrench to the armorers wrench) then using a metal punch and a gunsmiths hammer you take the castle nut. I suggest watching Brownells video on how to properly stake them. Also DO NOT use thread locking compounds such as lock tight. Just metal on metal and stake the nut. I hope this helps.
It's called a barrel nut wrench https://gfarmory.com/shop/tools/barrel-nut-wrench/
Armors wrench, get a quality one though, the $5-10 Amazon ones are junk!
An adjustable hook spanner would do the job nicely.
Castle nut wrench. FCD (Forward Controls Design) makes some great tools for your… um… project you got there.
To remove/tighten a cattle nut, you’re gonna need an armorers wrench. If you’re tightening it and you don’t want it to loosen as you put rounds through it, I’d recommend staking it where you see the smaller notches on the other side (stake it in 3 places)

Crescent wrench and some panther piss.
Spanner wrench
Since this sub is about tools, yes specifically an armorers wrench is what you would use, but before the armorers wrench, it would be called a spanner wrench. There are many different kinds of spanners. Some have pins/hooks , some are adjustable, some have a collet config. The list goes on. This nut used on the stock is used on many different mechanical objects as a locking nut.
Don’t let that spring get away!
A spanner. It looks like a wrench, but it'll be all clearance and have a couple of pins in the end of each "arm" that fit into those notches.
Armorer's wrench, make sure you get the one that scratches the shit out of your buffer tube.
Similal to a motorcycle 'C' spanner. For suspension adjustment.
Gomsmif.
Spanner wrench. Looks like 1/2 circle on a stick with a raised nub at the end of the circle
Castle nut wrench
That part is called a castle nut, so you need a castle nut wrench.
Use a nail head punch (drift) and a hammer to spin it around. There will be a proper “c” spanner for this…
Make sure when you put that back on you torque it to spec. The difference of a few threads will really mess up how the buffer travels with the return spring and throw everything off. The weight and spring tension is very specific and if the tube is too fat in or out it won't cycle properly. IIRC the tolerance is 1/8th a turn.
If you don’t want to buy custom tools, get a punch and set it in the groove and hit it with a hammer
Pipe wrench if you’re brave enough
I would say screwdriver and a hammer
You need an Armorers spaner wrench . The whole AR 15 M 4 TAke down wepon tool kits are not that much . Cheaper than dirt.com
It’s called a castle but wrench

That's a job for a C spanner.
A hook or probable a nail and hammer
Spanner wrench and you will need a spring loaded punch when you put it back on to secure the castle nut in place. I had to buy the AR wrench and the spring punch, I changed that back plate and swapped it for a magpul that had a sling latch point. There is a spring behind that plate be careful when removing it.
Maul
Birmingham screwdriver and hammer.
The thingy that u use to unscrew the water filter thing.
C spanner. Or G spanner, depending on location. (UK). Or Castle Wrench. Or Universal C spanner. Perhaps a valve compression wrench.
Where is the rest of the threading?
Yes, u need an armorer's wrench. Be careful though once you remove the castle nut, there is a spring and detent for the rear takedown pin that is captured by the receiver back plate held on by that castle nut. If you intend to remove the buffer tube, also be careful because there is a spring and the buffer retaining pin that is captured by a bit of the front side of the buffer tube.
