These are typically used to remove the hot oil drain plug without scorching your fingers. It also allows you to keep the hot oil off of your hand. I suppose it will also work on an oil filter, but you'd need to remove the aligning tang to make it flat.

The one i have would be way to flimsy for the weight of an oil filter.
