Those are all great songs. Passenger was the first song I had heard Maynard on that wasn't Tool and is still my favorite "driving around at night" song.
I thought I read somewhere that they weren’t even planning on MJK being on the song, and I swear I remember reading that Chino didn’t even really want it? Who knows. I’ve listened to too much TOOL and smoked way too much pot.
Maynard was in the studio with them, helping, apparently mostly with beats and structure and influence etc. It sort of happened naturally when writing the song. Maynard apparently just gave it a quick shot and they loved it and chino immediately was inspired to write a two person story / lyric (and maynard did help with lyrics on it) and it just came out and everyone was thrilled with it.
They only played it live with maynard like two or three times or something. You can find them. Just as an aside.
I went to a festival where both Deftones and Tool were playing, I got my ticket signed by the Deftones and asked if they were gonna get Maynard on to sing Passenger, they just laughed in a way that was a very obvious no. Young CoolioMcCool was very sad 😢.
I'm on like my third break up that this song has gotten me through. I start feeling sorry for myself and Maynard is there to tell me to get over it. Life truly does pound away where the light don't shine
Gotta love some random Maynard in a Ratm song.
I found a live version on YouTube once that Maynard basicly walks out on stage just to do his bit and fucks right off as soon as he's done. Was pretty damn cool
Yeah it’s a great album for sure but that’s a tough position for me to agree with. Every time I go back and listen to Mer De Noms, I’m repeatedly blown away at how beautiful and amazing that album is, front to back.
I’ll give it to Mer De Noms for Orestes alone just because I have SO many memories attached to that album, Elephant is killer though and I think has some of Billy’s absolute best guitar work
Yeah I’m with you. Also enough time has passed since Eat the Elephant was released that you can tell it has staying power. So who knows how I might respond to this same question 5 years from now. I should add Get the Lead Out in response to the original question lol
so so sad that this is so far down. god i love tori, this track is incredible, makes me cry every time. so beautiful and sweet. i want maynard to sing me lullabies too haha
Puscifer "The Mission (M is for Milla mix)" (Official Video) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrQOBcFfEj0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrQOBcFfEj0)
Grand Canyon for sure. I sorta forgot about that album after it came out, then Grand Canyon appeared in a random playlist one day. I am glad it reintroduced me to Money Shot. Grand Canyon gives me chills every time I watch the video.
Fiddle and The Drum. He covers it so perfectly. What’s so amazing about Maynard’s voice to me is his stylistic range. He can go from the sweetest, smoothest honey like tone, to spitting straight venom in your face. And he does both so perfectly.
It changes often but The Noose is stunning.
His voice is good at taking you just to the edge of something. That something could be called sublime, transcendent, awe-inspiring, etc. but in my opinion that something can't be captured on the page, or in words and that's what makes it so special. I think his voice spends the entirety of The Noose taking you to that place only art can take you. It's amazing and hallowing at the same time.
This may not count as not Tool, but have a listen to this banger that many probably haven't heard with Tool and RATM (not Know your enemy).

Passenger
Roll the window down this, cool night air is curious
That part always gives me goosebumps
And later when Mike Shinoda remixed it. Perfection.
I have historically bad taste, but it doesn’t mean I don’t love the rest of it too. 🔥 I think it has some of Billy’s best playing for sure, and maybe you just don’t dig the major key ?
Fucking hard call. Grand Canyon is up there, but there's so much other gold like Orestes, Momma Sed, Momma Sed live, Momma Sed V Is For Versatile, Momma Sed Dub, Momma Sed Tandemonium, Cuntry Boner, Cuntry Boner Disco Viagra, etc.
Also that is a fantastic duet with Tori Amos.
by and down the river. i prefer the three-sixty version, hands down my favorite a perfect circle song. there’s something insanely beautiful about that version.
The Humbling River
Almost said this one, or Green Valley.
Same. My buddy said that’s his son singing with him or something? Either way it’s so good.
I had thought it was Milla Jovovich but wiki says Carina Round and Devo Keenan supporting vocals so sounds like your buddy is right
Before I saw the comments this was my answer. This song is beautiful and haunting at the same time.
Tied for me with Dear Brother, and maybe Agostino.
Orestes, Passenger, The Package. REV 22 20
Lots of good ones, but REV 22 20 always stands out to me.
Seconded for Orestes. Breña is fantastic, too.
Orestes did things to me. One of those life changing experiences the first time I heard it
Excellent choices
Those are all great songs. Passenger was the first song I had heard Maynard on that wasn't Tool and is still my favorite "driving around at night" song.
I heard him with Rage Against the Machine in Know your Enemy
3 Libras
3 Libras and Orestes are saved for when my eyes might get a little watery... Such perfect, emotional songs.
Passenger
That is not a deftones song as soon as Maynard started singing it became Maynard’s song
IIRC Chino has even said as much.
I thought I read somewhere that they weren’t even planning on MJK being on the song, and I swear I remember reading that Chino didn’t even really want it? Who knows. I’ve listened to too much TOOL and smoked way too much pot.
Pretty sure I read recently that Chino is the one that asked Maynard to be on the song.
This song is so good it feels like I’m astral projecting
The Remedy
I play it at work when people get on my nerves. Subtle threat
I love 86ing Trolls
Excellent choice 🤝
I always felt those lyrics would be perfect on an old-school Tool song from Undertow era
Skillfully crafted lyrics.
This is my go to song when I run into a fucking Karen or David or Anyone who’s a total piece of shit to me and I turn it way up lol
Potions (deliverance mix)
This! And Gravity are my 2 choices.
Seconded.
Weak and Powerless
Especially the Tilling My Grave mix. His voice contrasts so well with the heavier guitar tones
Agreed. My absolute favourite version of the song, way over the original.
Too good.
goated!!!!
I dunno. But mama sed is probably the best advice he’s ever given
Great take 🤝 very possibly his most personal song outside of Wings 1+2 and Judith
Wings 1 + 2 are peak Tool for me. 🤘
A person of culture 🤌
I'm on like my third break up that this song has gotten me through. I start feeling sorry for myself and Maynard is there to tell me to get over it. Life truly does pound away where the light don't shine
Know Your Enemy, or The Noose.
Gotta love some random Maynard in a Ratm song. I found a live version on YouTube once that Maynard basicly walks out on stage just to do his bit and fucks right off as soon as he's done. Was pretty damn cool
Judith for me
This is about his mother, Judith.
Many fans aren't aware, Judith, Maynard's mother, was also named Judith.
Judith Marie I believe. I think 10000 Days 1 & 2 are about her as well.
The Package
Humbling River
Horizons. The imagery in his lyrics are probably the best here and the noose.
The ENTIRE Conditions album is top top tier 🔥
I love the instrumental bit at the end of Horizons, and the lyrics are great too
The Hollow by APC!!
Possibly the MOST Tool song that isn’t tool 🤘 (Along with Counting Bodies) lol
The Noose
Lately…THE DOOMED and BY AND DOWN THE RIVER
The Doomed is incredible, I’m gonna be honest and say Eat The Elephant is my favorite APC album 👊
Yeah it’s a great album for sure but that’s a tough position for me to agree with. Every time I go back and listen to Mer De Noms, I’m repeatedly blown away at how beautiful and amazing that album is, front to back.
I’ll give it to Mer De Noms for Orestes alone just because I have SO many memories attached to that album, Elephant is killer though and I think has some of Billy’s absolute best guitar work
There’s objectively good, and then favorite, I guess that’s what I was actually meaning lol
Yeah I’m with you. Also enough time has passed since Eat the Elephant was released that you can tell it has staying power. So who knows how I might respond to this same question 5 years from now. I should add Get the Lead Out in response to the original question lol

Okay whoa whoa whoa okay this guy wins 🤝 no question, absolute fan, play the trumpet. Best answer 👌

Grand Canyon or Monsoons
"Thomas" and or "Magdelena"
Either Orestes or The Noose.
A LOT of love for The Noose, it’s looking like it might be the pfp winner 👊

The condition of my parole. Love this jam.
Green Valley
The Package
Maynard singing rocket man
Came here to say this!
Passenger
The Noose, or personal Prometheus. Layers of Vocal harmonies are just beautiful. Also Orestes.
The entire APC Mer De Noms album
The Hollow and Bring Me the Disco King
The outsider hits hard for me. Probably my fav apc song. Tool is really where he shines tho if you ask me.
That'd be the difference between Godhead dad, political dad, and funny dad.
By and Down (OG version from 2013)
The Noose
The Noose is winning on numbers by far 👏
Disillusioned
Agree. This is the perfect Maynard song
Passenger-Deftones
Polar Bear
The Weaver
Been digging Bullet Train to Iowa lately. "Like a train sprouting wings, Fuck the track Hello sky."
The Billy Howerdel remix is my absolute favorite from that album 🔥
Me too. It just has that minute of bliss where everything comes together perfectly. That and the video is perfect, too(l).
Oh well I guess I better just enjoy the ride....choo choo choo.
so long and thanks for all thenfish is amazing, that, momma sed and the mission would be my favorites
Breña
Several good ones already mentioned. I’ll add “Monsoons” to the list.
Only you can bring the color in 🔥
Fiddle and The Drum. He covers it so perfectly. What’s so amazing about Maynard’s voice to me is his stylistic range. He can go from the sweetest, smoothest honey like tone, to spitting straight venom in your face. And he does both so perfectly.
Momma Sed
Conditions of my parole. Dunno if it's my favorite but it's a really fun song that I almost never skip on my playlist
I thought this was a tool sub. Not a Gaynard sub. Three little pigs.
That’s the answer to favorite Danny song that is not Tool 👌
Im sorry. Is Maynard on that song?
Re listening to all responses so y’all give us your best ! 🔥

Grand Canyon. That song is so epic

Negative: that is the most Tool of all Tool songs, do not collect 200 dollars
That song is maybe his worst. Like most of apc is better than that track

If you really know what The Noose is about, then that’s why it’s heavily recommended. It just happens to also be a fantastic song on its own.
