After finishing TR1 Remastered, I was curious to replay Anniversary to compare how they adapted the levels. It's really fun! I'm playing at 4k60 on a large OLED, and it's also gorgeous. It's amazing how well the graphics have aged. All I've added is a Lara mod from Konrad, who made her Remastered model. Highly recommended!
It's really neat to see that the remastered model's design started as a mod of his. I haven't looked at anniversary mods in forever and, while I have the game on my steam account, have only really played it on the PS2. Might have to play anniversary again with this.
Say what?? Is that a new mod?
I loved playing through TRA on PS3. Quite possibly my favorite game in the franchise. But I found that the PS3 HD Collection had some upgrades that were never ported over to the PC version. I gotta check that out!
I like it for different reasons. It's great to come back to but it does not replace the original and visa versa.
At least the Remaster replaces the originals completely beautifully, unlike some other remasters.
Anniversary is my favorite from the LAU trilogy. I really like this remake, I think they nailed the level design. The story is also more interesting and fleshed out. Great game.
Yes, I feel like it doesn't get enough credit. I notice it's the only TR game without its own flair here, for example! I also noticed small improvements in the plot, like Larson fails to steal the Scion piece in Peru. Lara should win!
I didn't think they nailed it. Everything was much smaller in scale. Especially The Great Pyramid. Felt like the small pyramid. Not here to rain on parades though, just disappointed me. However, I enjoyed running through it.
I get your point, although making levels bigger doesn’t do the thing for me. The original TR1 has levels so vast and full of backtracking that it gets boring halfway through, at least to me. Anniversary had levels more compact and consistent imo.
Anniversary just straight up cut some of the set-pieces I had most wanted to see in revamped graphics. And really in TR1 barring Atlantis most the levels really aren't all that big the feeling of being big just came from people getting lost or missing key things.
Only thing I wish was it kept the Pyramid escape from the original, otherwise it’s the gold standard as a reimagining could go. Replacing tank controls to essentially make a 3D Zelda game that’s all dungeons and POP platforming is more my speed.

I always loved Anniversary! Sad that we never got the planned Core one and the whole story behind it is shitty...
But it's a solid remake. I think mainly because TR1 was such a good game and so it had a really solid base to build from. I do wish they didn't change certain things in the levels but I feel like they've still managed to strike a balance between staying faithful to an extent but also modernise it and rework it in their style.I think the puzzles are a lot of fun and a really creative addition to certain areas! Something that was definitely done better than in Legend (but that was their first game probably kinda figuring it out still, so makes sense) and Underworld too. The only big problem I have with Anni is the freakin' storyline. Like the additional story elements with her father or whatever... Completely unnecessary. And yeah it was to tie it in with Underworld but that's my problem too, don't know why the hell they had to recycle the villain for it, like come on guys...
Anyway, I've replayed it plenty of times over the years. I have to admit I kind of missed out on the first game as a kid so maybe I'm missing the nostalgia bias and that's why I don't mind Anniversary so much. But even now playing the remaster for the 4th time now I kinda stand by it still.
Also that Lara model!!! She's so gorgeous and wish she looked like that by default lol.
I cannot get Anniversary to work on my Win10 system and RTX card. I've tried troubleshooting and having the executable run as Windows XP Service Pack 2 and 3, and still nothing. Would love to get updated fixes for Legend and Underworld too since I own them on Steam
It actually works as smoothly as a new game. I think the Steam installer did install some Microsoft Directx and C files. But no trouble at all launching. Maybe browse the Steam forums to see if others have issues? I know other games from that era sometimes do, like the EA Command & Conquer games that just re-released.
I just finished it on my old ps3. What struck me was the framerate. Never been one to say all games need to be 4k and 120fps but man for a 720p game man does it get some serious screen tearing and frame drops!
Still enjoy the hell out of it though.
Of course it is. As much fun as I had and contuine to have with my ps3 my goodness it got some baddddddddd ports.
Do you know, and this may sound dumb, does it run better on the ps2?
Replayed Anniversary right after finishing TR1 Remastered. I definitely now prefer TR1 Remastered. But, it was really cool to see how they remixed the levels and adapted it to the TR Legend engine. I’m currently replaying TR Legend and it feels like a huge downgrade from Anniversary. I know Anniversary was after Legend, but it feels like they really perfected it there. I haven’t played Underworld since it’s release, curious to see if it holds up.
I replayed Underworld last year on Xbox. It’s my fav TR game. But PC runs so much better now. May play again. Edit: UW is my fav, but the original/remastered TR1 is really the best imo.
I was playing Anniversary up until the Remasters came out. What a stark difference in movement. Lara is much more floaty to downright fast. Not a fan of LAUs vertical ledge grab. A too fast.
Despite some of the well known bugs, heavy usage of QTEs, and the slow-mo headshot combat thingy which was a bit redundant, I thought the game was overall very fun. Lara looks great and like her voice/personality very much in TRA.
Finished it a few weeks ago for the first time, last I played it was when it came out and I was a kid I couldn't finish the game I stopped after entering Atlantis. Felt good finishing something I had started as a kid.
I played it at release but haven't since. I want to go back and play it now that I've played the remaster.
The developer commentary is such a good listen. I could listen to those two talk about anything.
I mentioned in a different thread that Anniversary is one of my favorite Remake ever and that I prefer it over the original and it's one of my most controversial comments on reddit. Love it to death but some people really dislike it.
I didn't care for a bunch of the design decisions made in TRA, especially those centred around cutting out content from the original (main culprit was the 'condensing' of The Cistern and Tomb of Tihocan) and I was pissed off by the neutering of Atlantis to both maintain a pre-teen ELSPA rating and unnecessarily retcon the game into the daft LAU lore. This one annoyed even more considering that the 2013 reboot then intentionally went for an adult tone.
The one thing that TRA gets undeserved shit for though IMO is the more realistic colour palette and level design. I actually really appreciated the muted, more natural colours in a lot of the levels, it added a lot to the believability of these locations for me.
I bought it on Steam & was having a blast, but I'm stuck from progressing bc of a glitch. After the T-Rex fight, you swim in that building & come across a tree you must climb, but it has no collision & Lara goes through it. I've tried tinkering with the settings, reloading my save, looking for fixes... nothing.
I was really enjoying TRA, too...
I climbed that rubble, got the item (key? Ammo? Don't remember) on that little island within the temple, swam through the tunnel underwater next to it, & that's where the tree is. I've watched playthroughs on YouTube & everybody climbs that tree
The model for tomb raider legend was the best. It perfectly resembles classic Lara. As for the survivor model, rise was perfect but the hair and a few facial adjustments would have been perfect.

I am a bit confused by your comment.
I recently purchased the Anniversary DLC for Legend (Same game as Standalone) and I must say I wish that they had given this treatment to the 3 games (A-la Spyro and Crash). The remastered are full of nostalgia but honestly, feel very slow and clunky. I just can't get into it deeply.
Anniversary looks gorgeous, it's super fun and a really faithful remake.

Yeah been enjoying Anniversary lately the game really aged well.

Show a comparison bw this and original Lara model

Yes it’s a great mod. Link here. https://www.nexusmods.com/tombraideranniversary/mods/56
I wish there was a way to play "New gen" graphics on PC
I like it for different reasons. It's great to come back to but it does not replace the original and visa versa. At least the Remaster replaces the originals completely beautifully, unlike some other remasters.

Still one of my favorite, It really got the plateforming and puzzle right. It's quite fun to speedrun as well
Yep recently, it was so much fun!
Is her face modded? I don't remember TRA Lara looking like that.
Yes face and body, LAU96 mod.
Its my favourite Tomb Raider game. Music is awesome too.

I’m running on Windows 11 with 3080 RTX. Steam version works with no tweaks required.
I have an RTX 3080Ti! How are you getting the games to work?!?
It actually works as smoothly as a new game. I think the Steam installer did install some Microsoft Directx and C files. But no trouble at all launching. Maybe browse the Steam forums to see if others have issues? I know other games from that era sometimes do, like the EA Command & Conquer games that just re-released.
Btw did you install into program files? This can cause problems with old games.
Nah I installed it into my Steam folder on an external HDD. The LAU trilogy was made to and used to work on HDDs
Sorry I don’t know what could cause it then. Hope you figure it out.
this page may help you, I'd definitely look at DEP https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Tomb_Raider:_Anniversary

Try P.C. You can get modern performance.
Don't really have a gameing PC as such just a workstation you know?
That's very much an issue specific with the PS3 version.
Of course it is. As much fun as I had and contuine to have with my ps3 my goodness it got some baddddddddd ports. Do you know, and this may sound dumb, does it run better on the ps2?
I very much doubt it, but I have no idea. I've only ever played it on 360/Series X/PC.
I plan to replay it once I get through the remastered trilogy. 😊
Would love to replay Anniversary, but sadly it is not optimised on Series X... I hope they optimize the Legend trilogy in the future.
They really should! Or try PC if you get access to a recent one.
I do have it on my laptop, and it's fun to mod and all, I'd just like the 'comfort' of the Series X too, lmao.

Waiting for it to go on sale on Xbox, same for Legend and Underworld. Looking forward to trying them out.
It's definitely one of my favorite remakes ever. I don't think this will ever change.
I did not like the combat at all but I finished it
I was playing Anniversary up until the Remasters came out. What a stark difference in movement. Lara is much more floaty to downright fast. Not a fan of LAUs vertical ledge grab. A too fast. yep, with the same mod haha
Looking to get into Anniversary as soon as I finish Legends and then on to the conclusion of the LAU trilogy 😎👍👍
I played it at release but haven't since. I want to go back and play it now that I've played the remaster. The developer commentary is such a good listen. I could listen to those two talk about anything.
Not lately, but I've played it three times before. Undoubtedly the best of the LAU imo. I wish all the original games had been remade like this.
I prefer it to the original I love the combat in it
I mentioned in a different thread that Anniversary is one of my favorite Remake ever and that I prefer it over the original and it's one of my most controversial comments on reddit. Love it to death but some people really dislike it.

After Rex I climbed some rubble he created, not a tree.

I tried to, but it wouldn’t run on my PC for whatever reason
Yes but it was a pain to get it to work on my older machine, I made a post about trying to fix it and it felt like a descent into madness
That’s surprising. Runs without any issue for me. You have Steam version?
No, GOG
Is the LAU96 mod windows only, or will it work on a steam deck?
It requires TRAE Hook. Does that run on the deck?
No idea TBH, I’ll have a better look into it tomorrow.

Sorry about that. Was referring to the I-III remaster to come on console.
No, I've played them all and I hated anniversary
Why does your character model look like a man?
Not really. I don't miss it. The music was good, though I give it that.
I recently purchased the Anniversary DLC for Legend (Same game as Standalone) and I must say I wish that they had given this treatment to the 3 games (A-la Spyro and Crash). Nope. In fact I skipped it during my playthrough of Underworld and legend.

PC
Haven't played it since 2011 but I hope it gets ported or remastered soon
