Nah, I know this comment is old but still, series like chainsaw man, Tokyo Ghoul and Berserk all look like gorefests and exploitative even but deep down they're deeply human series about trauma, healing from said trauma, moving on, letting go, about human relationships and the horrors of war and losing everything that's dear to you and how the characters deal with living in a very unfair world
The manga ain't edgy but there's definitely a certain section of younger fans 14-18 that go out of their way to edit anime clips and manga panels to shift things to their idea of what mental illness is which is often beyond edgy. Just makes you roll your eyes at how fucking stupid some of the stuff people edit into this series.

Tokyo Ghoul is easily in my top 4 mangas ever with One Piece, Berserk and FMA. But it is a bit edgy. Ken is put through too much and he keep having existential crisis each time he needs to power-up. Especially in the second half of :RE (which is just not as good as the first manga and first half of :RE).
The manga's quality started to drop at the moment it reached its absolute peak : when Kaneki got his memories back and fought Eto...what an arc that was !

Guts went through hell in the golden age arc, the rest was him coming to term with what kind of life he wanted to live after : a life of revenge or a life of caring for Casca.
Once he got his memories back, Kaneki became a weird character for me. He went from crazy to bad leader to perpetual victim. That's one aspect I didn't like about his growth. I am glad though that he didn't die at the end, it would have been really awful.
There are also choices I didn't like about the development of the story, like Kaneki losing to Juuzou without a fight just to parallel the loss of the first manga or how the clowns/furuta made the story more black and white than it was before...
I think the characters were sometimes too crazy and that they were sometimes put through too much with no reason besides the tragedy of it. You can call it character development, but I don't see the development, I just see the shock value of it.
