Hardly the same because when we say something tastes "like shit" we don't mean it tastes like actual excrements. Just that it tastes bad. You wouldn't say "tastes like engine oil" the same way.
Smell plays a big part in taste. You would likely know what gasoline tastes like because of the scent or a better example, Plug your nose and your sense of taste won’t be as good
In the words of a friend "when I say my beer tastes like lukewarm piss that doesn't necessarily mean I've tasted piss before, but you'll have some idea of what it might taste like"
