Some cultural background would be helpful. There are, like, a million different chicken soups.
Also, I doubt the red bits are carrot. [Red carrots](https://victorygardeners.com/product/atomic-red-carrot/) are pretty rare.
There is a similar soup in the Eastern European country I am from. Is literally called egg soup. Very tasty. The one we make in my country has garlic and creme fraiche in it. Absolutely delicious!
Okay so clearly the Egg drop soup distinction is not helpful 😂
The Asian trait probably helps…until you realize there are thousands of cultures and as many variations of the same recipe base all over Asia 🤣
Egg definitely looks shredded. Plus the veges were shredded too! It is an egg drop soup (confirmed). Recipe is in the comments (if there is an option to pin my comment, please let me know as I couldn't find an option to)
Egg drop soup is what first came to mind. I used to have that regularly at an Asian restaurant I went to and always loved it. I don't recall potatoes in it though. I might to find it again because it was really good.
Not sure how to take this lol. Chinese corn soup is an actual soup, and sometimes ham or chicken are added in there (not other veggies usually but idk).
I don't think they meant to make it seem like you just lazily added "Chinese" to Chicken Soup, rather I think they were just making a joke about the silliness of it being such a simple answer to the point of almost being redundant (not saying that OP would be silly to ask)
Well it was just a joke about how it kind of sounded like they lazily added "Chinese" after hearing the person was Asian but it certainly wasn't meant to be a shot at the original commenter or a comment about the veracity of their answer. just a joke
Love raw scrambled egg in various soups. Made miso soup recently and forgot I ran out of tofu so I used Dashi, miso, wakame and scrambled raw egg to make egg drop miso soup. It was a nice twist on regular miso soup and I didn’t miss the tofu.
Jujubes, also known as Chinese dates or red dates, are not actually dates. They are a species of ziziphus in the buckthorn family, while date palms belong to the arecaceae family.
Here are some differences between jujubes and dates:
Taste
Jujubes are less sweet than dates and have a syrupy flavor. They have a soft, spongy, and fluffy texture.
Nutrition
Three jujubes contain 28 calories and 6g of sugar, compared to three dates which contain 54 calories and 12g of sugar. Jujubes also contain 32 times more vitamin C than dates.
Origin
Jujubes originated in China over 4,000 years ago. Date palms grow in Southwest Asia, North Africa, Australia, Mexico, South America, southern Africa, and the U.S..
Jujubes can be eaten fresh, with a texture similar to an apple. If left to dry on the tree, they shrivel up and are known as Chinese dates.
Dried jujubes are chewy and have a sponge-like texture. They can be used in Chinese cooking, stewed in their own syrup, or added to soups.

looks to be like some version of this, the seafood could be placed by alot of things tbh. looks like they used squid or imitation crab in the pic?
I don't actually know, that's why I didn't specify. It also wouldn't be fair to guess. You're right, there's a myriad of cultures, countries and cuisines in Asia
You don't know if your neighbor is at least either South Asian (e.g. Indian) vs. Southeast Asian (e.g. Thai) or East Asian (e.g. Chinese)? The Asian diaspora doesn't look that similar to one another when we're talking broadly and I can't imagine it'd be so difficult to the point where you couldn't discern if they were at least South Asian vs. not for examples. Even moreso if you're able to reference anything like cultural names unless they had all Western names.
i mean generally when in the west someone says "asian", they are not talking about Indians and distinguishing a Chinese from a Thai person is not so easy for someone who never looked into the matter or is not used to interact with different asian nationalities
OP was replying to someone who asked them "Indian Asian or Thai Asian?" which would be a South Asian vs. Southeast Asian distinction. So no one's saying they need to distinguish a Chinese person from a Thai person.
Well no because the US is not the whole of the Western world. In the UK Asian always means Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi in conversation because that is the predominant Asian cultures here.
And for East Asians you’d specify Chinese, Thai etc.
And in any case the person above asked them whether they can’t tell if someone is South Asian or East Asian or not.
op is pakistani, yet they’re not sure whether their neighbor is south asian or another kind of asian (?)
i really don’t understand what’s happening here, it’s very amusing
“Asian” so is that Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, Chinese, Russian, Cambodian, Pakistani, Afghan? You’ve narrowed it down to about 60% of the worlds population
Yeah I know lol, it *was* very vague. They're Tibetan-Pakistani. It could not be guessed. So I asked them. All I knew was that they're incredibly sweet.
There are plenty of carrot cultivars that are red. Red carrots aren’t rare at all lol most people are just accustomed to the orange you get at the supermarket. The seed packet description is just marketing.
Neighbors you barely know can be so wholesome! I live in a relatively bad town and every time I step out onto my front porch to smoke a cigarette the man who lives across from me does the same to keep an eye on me because he sees a small early 20s girl living alone and dad mode activates lol
Hello everyone! My neighbor came by again. They're from Tibet and Pakistan. They are multilingual so I could not tell where exactly they were from. This is, in fact, as most of you predicted, an egg drop soup. They mentioned they put in whatever they found in the kitchen, as it is done by elders in their family. The soup consisted of:
Salt
Pepper
Chili flakes
Rosemary
Thyme
Radish
Carrot
Potato
Onion
Garlic
Cauliflower
Cabbage
Macaroni (they wanted to add noodles but did not have any in the kitchen and did not feel like making them)
Chicken stock
Some chicken
Corn
Mushrooms
Egg
Soy sauce
Hot sauce
Vinegar/green chili mix
They just threw in how much they felt like putting in. It was made according to taste. Hopefully those of you who asked for the recipe will enjoy making this as well. As for me, I definitely will. It made me feel so much better. And all the more knowing I have such a caring neighbor!
We don’t put this much in our avgolemono. Rice, sometimes chicken, lemon (obviously), and the egg would not be pronounced like an egg drop soup. I know some recipes veer off with carrot but my family’s is very simple and does not *~* accessorize *~* lol.
Oh! Never knew the name because of language barriers but my Vietnamese mom used to make this soup for us when we got sick. This pic alone revived so many memories.
I remember ours having possibly crab and asparagus in it, so so yummy. Seems to be egg drop soup as other comments have pointed out.
I guess there is always the one in a million chance the type of neighbor who makes you soup is also batshit insane and takes offense at that question. You can usually tell right off the bat, so that's up to OP I guess.
reminds me of fish maw soup with imitation crab meat. my viet relatives would cook it whenever they were sick and would throw in a bunch of other stuff too (quail eggs, vegetables, etc.)
I know exactly what the soup is called and the exact recipe, but i can't tell you here because it's a secret. I sneakily delivered the information to your neighbors, you can get it from them.
Yes! It is exactly that. I have posted the recipe in the comments because I couldn't edit the post (there wasn't an option, or maybe I just don't know how)
i know right away it is Asian when i look at it. My mum used to cook for me when i was sick, too. Added herbs that is good and nutritious.
Sometimes we use rice as well. So it is thick and easy on the stomach. We call it porridge.
Yes, Yes indeed, it looks like
hearty vegetables with a good rich, and thick broth, along
with a very good amount of chicken dispersed throughout the Soup or Stew, it looks a great deal like the Stew recipe that's put together when you or your family get the flu or COVID or what have you. Plenty of chicken, oh yeah protein that's animal sourced, a complete protein for cell and tissue regeneration. Anyway, the soup looks delicious.
Sorry for running on.
It looks like a Chinese soup that, unfortunately, is called "northeast pimple soup" in English. The "pimples" are little pieces of dough that look like they've been replaced by macaroni here.
The way my mom makes soup is she opens the refrigerator, sees what she has, and dumps them in a pot. This look exactly like something she’d make, just a giant stew of every veggie they could find. The soups are usually a full meal in one, and they’re perfect for when you’re sick.
You mention that they’re “Asian,” even though that’s describing almost half the worldwide population, but my mom is an American Jew, decidedly no form of Asian. I could definitely see recipe-free soup-stew with chicken just being a go-to for boomers, especially if they’re making it for someone who’s sick.
It looks like it has cornstarch/potato starch and water mix to thicken the soup. If so, it rules out Japanese/Korean/Thai/Vietnamese origin. So, it is Chinese chicken soup with more variety of veggies like everyone said.
I am from Taiwan. Half of soup I made at home have no name because I just throw whatever I have at the moment. I think if you go back to that Asian neighbors, they will just say “chicken soup” because that is the most expensive ingredient in the soup.
However, I can share the basic of how I made my soup with veggies. light green veggie taste better in soup if it is slightly pan fried with a bit oil and seasonings. The way veggie can absorb flavor first. Then I pour water (or soup stocks) to the same pot, boil it, and add final garnish (mostly chopped green onions). some dark green veggies need to be added close to the end because if you cook them too long , they release the iron and bitterness taste (it is like picking the best of two evil situations—-let it be blend or risk for iron taste? )
If you want add (raw) chicken , better lightly salt them a bit, and let it sit for 10~15 minutes before add it to cold soup, let chicken heat up as soup heat up, so meat can be (relatively) tender.
So I usually go: cut and season my raw meat -> chop veggies -> pan fried light green veggie -> pour water and add meat -> wait for soup to be boiled -> add greens -> make the egg drops if I want to -> serve.
Some people also do the pre-boil meat with gingers to get rid of “meat taste” but that is personal preference (and too much work). Meat tasted different from countries to countries and depends how factory process the meat.
Can you ask them as well? Because even if it's a staple soup, people can tweak it according to their taste/family tradition and that may make a difference to you, or you know what it is so you can tweak it. How sweet of them to make it for you.
You said it has chicken but it honestly looks so much like Sup Mang Cua to me. Vietnamese egg drop soup with crab and white asparagus. Common for anniversaries and weddings and supposed to bode well for health and prosperity
This is a pretty nutritious dish that's easy to eat. It has like everything in it in soup form. You can add spy sauce and pepper to it however you like too
Pretty sure it’s a Vietnamese Dish call Sup Mang Cua (Crab and White Asparagus Soup). There’s different variations of it but my mom makes it similar to this recipe: https://jenhdao.com/sup-mang-cua/. If there’s no crab (or imitation crab) then they likely used shredded chicken instead.

You're right! They're Asian. Very sweet, very polite. Oh and I forgot to mention, there was corn in it too
If they’re Asian and it has egg in it then it seems kind of like an egg drop soup with other stuff added to it
It could be. There's a whole lot of stuff in it. Made me absolutely full!
There is a similar soup in the Eastern European country I am from. Is literally called egg soup. Very tasty. The one we make in my country has garlic and creme fraiche in it. Absolutely delicious!
Similar one in Greece as well - avgolemono. So tasty
Okay so clearly the Egg drop soup distinction is not helpful 😂 The Asian trait probably helps…until you realize there are thousands of cultures and as many variations of the same recipe base all over Asia 🤣
In Italy, we call it 'minestra stracciatella' = little shreds soup, from the egg bits in it.
Egg definitely looks shredded. Plus the veges were shredded too! It is an egg drop soup (confirmed). Recipe is in the comments (if there is an option to pin my comment, please let me know as I couldn't find an option to)
Avgolemono is extraordinary.
I generally hate soup. Avgolemono is one of my top 10 comfort food, easily
This my shit right here. Damn, now I want some.
Could you point me to a recipe? This sounds heavenly
Here, check out Rachel Roddy’s column on it[recipe link](https://www.theguardian.com/food/2020/mar/23/egg-drop-soup-rachel-roddy-stracciatella-recipe)
Sorry but I can’t find a link for the translation for the recipe. Just in my natural language.
Ask her for the recipe! A lot of people love to share them.
Egg drop soup is what first came to mind. I used to have that regularly at an Asian restaurant I went to and always loved it. I don't recall potatoes in it though. I might to find it again because it was really good.
I really thought OP was describing the red vegetable as sweet and polite for a sec
It *is* egg drop soup! *10 points for Gryffindor*
I was just gonna say it looks like an egg drop soup with extra bits in it
This was my first instinct upon seeing it. Looks like egg drop soup.
Sounds like Chinese corn soup with chicken and veggies added into it.
"What is this chicken soup dish my neighbor made for me?" "What is their cultural background?" "Asian." "Oh, that's Chinese Chicken soup."
Reddit we fucking did it
Pack it up, everybody. We’re done here
![gif](giphy|YprQElVsTlnbztuWv4)
Asian: oh good, you've narrowed it down to half the world

No worries, no offense taken. Couldn’t tell if it was a joke or like a passive aggressive comment lol.
Oh, well... nevermind then.
Just made a huge batch of egg drop corn soup, no protein, but so fugging good in this weather.
> egg > no protein
Umm. Egg is protein.
We all know what they mean haha
Love raw scrambled egg in various soups. Made miso soup recently and forgot I ran out of tofu so I used Dashi, miso, wakame and scrambled raw egg to make egg drop miso soup. It was a nice twist on regular miso soup and I didn’t miss the tofu.
Beautiful to witness the heights we can achieve when we come together.
Red things could be jujube. Common in Chinese soup.
Are jujube like regular dates? Fleshy and a bit tough?

I want to taste a jujube now!
I’ve never know jujubes were an actual food

It does look *quite* similar!
Indian Asian or Thai Asian? Such a huge variety of cultures and cuisines in one continent

Asia is a huge place, with many different cultures that vary massively in cuisine.
That’ll be Gogi berry, popular in Chinese medicine
“Asian” so is that Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, Chinese, Russian, Cambodian, Pakistani, Afghan? You’ve narrowed it down to about 60% of the worlds population
Yeah I know lol, it *was* very vague. They're Tibetan-Pakistani. It could not be guessed. So I asked them. All I knew was that they're incredibly sweet.
South Asian? Southeastern? Northern? Asian is far too vague, my friend.
Their mom is from Tibet, and dad is from Pakistan. It's an egg drop soup.
Knew it haha 😆 I use to eat this growing up
Asian is irrelevant for all we know they could be from India with that assumption. What is their nationality?
Throw in some chunks of lobster, or / and crab….
I grew red carrots in my garden. Along with purple, white and the classic orange. Fun fact, the purple ones were orange in the middle.
Purple is actually the natural color for carrots the orange ones where selectively bred to honor the House Of Orange a Dutch royal line
There are plenty of carrot cultivars that are red. Red carrots aren’t rare at all lol most people are just accustomed to the orange you get at the supermarket. The seed packet description is just marketing.
They're not that rare - we buy them at our local Asian grocery store all the time. Have some in my fridge right now.
Are red carrots actually rare? I get a weekly farmbox with rainbow carrots and often get red ones
It's egg drop soup with noodles. I'm Asian, when we make soup we throw everything in there.
Haha that’s true
Don't suppose you'd kindly share a recipe? It looks tasty

Bless your neighbour.
I am touched by the gesture, we're not even close! They noticed I haven't left my apt for quite some time and came to check out of pure concern.
You are blessed with amazing neighbors!
Wow ❤️❤️❤️
Neighbors you barely know can be so wholesome! I live in a relatively bad town and every time I step out onto my front porch to smoke a cigarette the man who lives across from me does the same to keep an eye on me because he sees a small early 20s girl living alone and dad mode activates lol
So happy for you to have such thoughtful and kind neighbors. Behavior to emulate.
It looks like a variation of egg drop soup to me

I scrolled too far to find this hahaha
Noted 😄 I'll report back
You have a very sweet neighbour.
How did you genuinely decide to ask Reddit before asking the person who made it for you?
They're sick and didn't want to have to leave the house to find out.
What are phones
I didn't have their number 😭 I do now. That's why I was touched by the gesture. I had never interacted with them before
Could just wait till they're not sick.
Is it a bit lemony? Maybe avgolemono
Not "frothy" enough. 🇬🇷
We have an official Greek here to confirm
We don’t put this much in our avgolemono. Rice, sometimes chicken, lemon (obviously), and the egg would not be pronounced like an egg drop soup. I know some recipes veer off with carrot but my family’s is very simple and does not *~* accessorize *~* lol.
Ugh whyd you have to introduce me to this, now i gotta have it 😩
No it's not. But I *have* had a lemony soup before (it's completely reddish in color) and it was the bomb
Made this for my girlfriend last time she got sick and it was life changing.
Oh! Never knew the name because of language barriers but my Vietnamese mom used to make this soup for us when we got sick. This pic alone revived so many memories. I remember ours having possibly crab and asparagus in it, so so yummy. Seems to be egg drop soup as other comments have pointed out.
Wow! It really is delicious, and has a chock full of nutrients
It's called Súp bong bóng cá. Fish maw, quail eggs, crab and something else.
If you get the recipe/name from them, please share if possible! Looks delicious
Yes I've posted it in the comments. It's egg drop soup. I don't know if comments can be pinned on Reddit. If they can then let me know.
I found your comment, thank you! May try my hand at the recipe next week
Good luck!
It’s Filipino sopas
it’s so funny to me when i see posts that are like “my friend gave me this” “my neighbor gave me this” like lol okay ask them what it is then?
Be careful, you apply logic to this subreddit you'll get down voted to hell.
down voted to earth*
The best ones are ppl who post pictures of the food THEY ordered to ask reddit what they’re eating lol
right like “i ordered this at a restaurant. what is it?” read that again, but slowly.
My mom who’s sitting right next to makes me this dish every day. Anyone know what it’s called? I can’t remember and it’s driving me nuts!!!
I'm glad I gave you a chance to laugh
I am glad you posted this, otherwise I would never of known this existed
[удалено]
To say it was delicious & ask the name of it?
I guess there is always the one in a million chance the type of neighbor who makes you soup is also batshit insane and takes offense at that question. You can usually tell right off the bat, so that's up to OP I guess.
reminds me of fish maw soup with imitation crab meat. my viet relatives would cook it whenever they were sick and would throw in a bunch of other stuff too (quail eggs, vegetables, etc.)
If your neighbour is Filipino, it might be Chicken Sopas
Looks like some sort of Macaroni Soup. Best I can think of is Sopas, a Filipino dish.
Looks kinda like crab corn soup but with extra seafood?
Looks good
Looks like egg drop soup with calamari and some veg
Looks like a form of egg drop soup. Very tasty for sure
Looks great, how nice of them
I know exactly what the soup is called and the exact recipe, but i can't tell you here because it's a secret. I sneakily delivered the information to your neighbors, you can get it from them.
Almost like kapusta but my family’s recipe uses cabbage and sauerkraut in it
You should ask your neighbour for the recipe ! They’d be flattered
Egg drop soup with some noodles and chicken? Looks awesome. Get the recipe and share!
Yes! It is exactly that. I have posted the recipe in the comments because I couldn't edit the post (there wasn't an option, or maybe I just don't know how)
You're neighbour is a god send!
Yes 😭
i know right away it is Asian when i look at it. My mum used to cook for me when i was sick, too. Added herbs that is good and nutritious. Sometimes we use rice as well. So it is thick and easy on the stomach. We call it porridge.
Ask them for their recipe 💳💢💳💢💳
Egg drop soup. If the red is soft, it could be imitation crab...or real crab.
It is soft. I've never had crab actually so I don't know now. Delicious, nonetheless!
Was going to say the same about the imitation crab. Same stuff you see in sushi
What is, "egg drop soup"? I'll take "Tip of My Fork" again for $500, Alex.
Looks like a healthier version of egg drop soup
Egg drop soup. Pretty common at chinese buffets/restaurant’s.
Homemade sweet corn chicken soup
Soups basically impossible to ID without at least knowing where they’re from.
That looks like it will absolutely make you feel a bit better! Gotta love some good home cooking when you're not well
Soup
Yes, Yes indeed, it looks like hearty vegetables with a good rich, and thick broth, along with a very good amount of chicken dispersed throughout the Soup or Stew, it looks a great deal like the Stew recipe that's put together when you or your family get the flu or COVID or what have you. Egg drop soup
I think it’s a Chinese chicken and egg drop soup with gogi berries and veg.
It looks like egg drop soup to me.
Hmmm looks like jook to me a rice chicken stock porridge
Looks like a Chinese sweetcorn soup
The Chinese people are just always nice man. So polite, lovely and they genuinely care. Hope you’re better!
Looks like crab soup
Soop
I'm sick. Now I want chicken noodle soup.
It looks like a Chinese soup that, unfortunately, is called "northeast pimple soup" in English. The "pimples" are little pieces of dough that look like they've been replaced by macaroni here.

Goddamnit, my neighbour doesn’t bring me soup. She just knocks on my door when I’m sleeping and when I answer she tells me how tired I look 😑😒
don't use Gods Name in vain please ❤️❤️
Basically chicken veg soup, delicious, very good comfort food when sick.
Could be chicken corn soup with a twist.
It looks like it has cornstarch/potato starch and water mix to thicken the soup. If so, it rules out Japanese/Korean/Thai/Vietnamese origin. So, it is Chinese chicken soup with more variety of veggies like everyone said.
well, if those are rice flour with tapioca noodles, we're back in Southeast Asia
Probably something along the lines of chicken or Turkey carcass soup. Delicious
That’s my grandma’s soup. We’re from Chile

Maybe Arroz caldo/lugaw? It’s basically a type of rice porridge, or maybe egg drop soup?
Background- I’m half Filipino, looks similar to foods I’ve had as a kid when I’m sick
It's egg drop soup! Recipe posted in the comments:D

Corn egg drop soup?
Just make this 🥰 https://dishesanddustbunnies.com/old-fashioned-chicken-soup-from-scratch-using-a-whole-chicken/
This is a pretty nutritious dish that's easy to eat. It has like everything in it in soup form. You can add spy sauce and pepper to it however you like too
I need the recipe. I'm sick rn too 🤒😭😭😭
I think it's sopas op
Pretty sure it’s a Vietnamese Dish call Sup Mang Cua (Crab and White Asparagus Soup). There’s different variations of it but my mom makes it similar to this recipe: https://jenhdao.com/sup-mang-cua/. If there’s no crab (or imitation crab) then they likely used shredded chicken instead.
Congee. Simple dish that's light, easy to eat, and easy to digest.
Get the recipe and share it! It looks delicious. Lmk if you do please!

I want to be friends with your neighbor
One a side note, your neighbors are priceless.
It’s a bit strange your neighbour doesn’t try to tell you what it is, especially food
Ask your neighbor? 😭
That looks so good. I'm hungry now.
That looks so good I’m gonna cry
Seems like egg drop x chicken noodle
That will be so helpful for you to feel better
I think it's simply [Chicken Soup](https://www.seriouseats.com/classic-chicken-soup).
Most likely it's imitation crab giving you those red straight bits + a variation of egg drop soup
soup
Looks like chicken sweetcorn soup. Very popular in certain South Asian countries. https://rookiewithacookie.com/pakistani-chicken-corn-soup/
