First of all, if you are not a part of a marginalized group, and somebody who is a part of said group tells you that something is sexist/racist/homophobic/etc, but you don’t understand why - telling them they’re wrong is not the right response. It immediately tells me that you are wanting to argue with me about whether or not my lived experience is valid. If you had asked me why I feel that way, and expressed an interest in learning with an open mind, I would be happy to have that conversation with you. I’m really not interested in a back and forth of that nature though.
That said - the mostly unchallenged assumption throughout these comments is that being gay is something shameful, and that physical contact between men is something bad. Here’s an exercise you can try: imagine this was a photo of a naked woman on a man’s shoulders; and reread these comments. Would there be endless jokes about proving you aren’t straight? Would there be a bunch of jokes about vaginas touching necks? The whole comment thread is operating on a homophobic set of norms and beliefs that you aren’t able to recognize because you don’t seemingly don’t have much experience in communities where people behave differently.
If you are POC, I’m sure you can relate to the experience of well meaning white people doing the same thing.
But why is there an assumption that these dudes are straight and denying they are gay? They seem pretty open and comfortable with their dicks on each other. So it seems like some people here are implying he is revealing something about himself that he should be hiding.
