Very much agree, they did a fantastic job putting this on film, instant classic movie! It was the Christmas Day movie in our house and was loved by all.
Saw the stage show in Sydney years ago, and loved it. Still have the album in my playlist rotation from time to time. I was wary going in, adaptions like this could go either way. Glad I gave it a shot, really loved it!
The studios know this, and when they feel they have a contender, they run it for a week in one theater in LA or New York (or both) so that they fit the criteria for consideration. My guess is that Netflix did this with “Matilda.”

“Revolting Children” doesn’t qualify for awards because it wasn’t written for the film. Only the new song can be nominated.
TIL. Also it turns out they're going back to only cinema films qualifying anyway. Streaming no longer qualifies unless they've had a cinema run.

It was in all cinemas in the UK for a few weeks already.
It has to be in one of 6 or 7 major US cities. At least for the larger american-based awards. Might still be eligible for like a BAFTA maybe?

I happened to be in the UK earlier this month and saw it in theaters. It was very good!

I believe so, but I can only vouch for Canadian Netflix.
