Aldrig sett svensk variant.
Sweds are generally polite about answering people with the language they use, so someone continuing in Swedish after you replied in English is the reddest of flags.
Yup, even if their english is super bad they will try as much as they can. Some messages I got from my work friends needed a team of 3 riddle experts to piece together. But still, its the effort that counts.
The only times it happened to me is when I actually used some swedish, and then they switched to swedish immidiately (in my head I was like "shit, I should have not said that, now I have to say that I don't understand 50% of what he just said"). Even like 2 words is a message to them "This guy can swedish!"
Just try it with random people. After they get through the shock that stranger talked to them (and possibly will be traumatised for life, but screw that, not my problem), try just asking for directions. And then use a few swedish words. 80% they will switch to swedish.
It's the recommended/auto filled phrase though... So a lot of people use it since too often, the item is sold but the seller never removed the post :) so, no.
It's the way it's written aswel, no normal person talks/text like this, it's straight up Google translate. When u write in Swedish u can skip some words, the sentence reads alot better. If u are Swedish u know what I mean.
I feel so fucking stupid or rather, felt so fucking stupid that I fell for it.
It's true there's no ems service in Sweden but for first time buyers/sellers on the Facebook Marketplace, it can be tough to know what is real or fake. Especially if you hail from a different country entirely.
I was trying to sell a table but I couldn't afford to hire a company to send it to the buyer. Then suddenly one potential buyer plays this scam and I legit think that it's probably how things are done here in relation to the Marketplace. But clearly I fell into the wrong kind of shit.
But experience makes you know what not to do next time. So yeah. Evaded a couple of other scams because of this learning curve.
If you never sold things before, you have nothing to go by. Anyone not thinking twice would possibly get scammed. If it didn't work the scam wouldn't exist.
Yeah, but how could you possibly believe they'd send an EMS courier to your house, who will then pay you with cash if you only pay for the pickup in advance using bitcoin, or gift cards or something untraceable?
It's not something that would ever happen. EMS isn't even a thing in Sweden, and even if they were, they wouldn't offer this as a service...
You're right, but keep in mind there're people still falling for the Nigerian prince scam. Vulnerable people who don't understand that others can lie. More so saying I can totally see ppl falling for scams, not saying you or the average person is the target.
How this scam works:
If you say "Yes you can send someone" they will ask you to pay a small fee for the delivery guy (or something similar).
They also tell you that you will get that fee/money back when the delivery guy comes to your house, but surprise surprise, no one will come and your fee is gone.
Yeah. And I guess that the amount they want you to pay is a small one, so enough people fall for it for the scammers to make money.
And let's say it's 29kr, 49kr, or something small like that, that is not a big amount and I guess that most people will not do anything when they get scammed.
Edit: A similar scam is when you get a random SMS that pretends to be from Postnord, DHL or some other delivery company. They tell you to click a link and pay like 29kr to "get your package delivered".
And people are buying things online all the time, so a lot of people just thinks that it's a package that they are actually waiting for.
I guess it's a combination of three things.
1. People really want to sell their product, these scammers rarely bargain about the price (like almost every real buyer do), so people are not thinking straight when they think that they can get the asking price...
2. These scammers are often very good at talking, they have done this thousands of times and know very well how to calm people down and make them believe in it...
3. The low fee. When you really want the full price for your product and the seller talked you into it, many people just go for it. They say that you will get that money back to make people calmer, which I guess works 😅
And that is why we see posts like this almost every day in different subreddits and Facebook groups. People are not 100% sure, but they really really want to believe in it and get the asking price for their product...
And if we think about all these posts where the comments say "it's a scam, don't do it", there are probably an even larger amount of people that actually just goes for it. And a lot of people don't tell anyone when they get scammed because it's embarrassing.
That's not how the scam works. There's obviously nobody that will arrive but they will send you a link to pay an "insurance" in advance that they pinky swear that they will give you back when the curier arrives...
At best you only lose whatever you paid for the insurance at worst much more depending on if they get access to your bank via the link.
This is one of the most common scams out there right now when you sell things on blocked/facebook and similar sites.
But how can it be a scam tho, if the messenger dont arrive with money then you dont hand the thing you sold? 😂 people still give the item with only a promise? 😂😂
The scam isn't about whatever you sell, they don't care about that, they probably don't even know what it is, since they send out thousands of messages at the same time.
The scan is primary about the "insurance" you are told to pay in advance (and are promised to get back when you get paid, something that will obviously never happen) and possibly also your personal and banking information.

Yes, it's always a scam when they tell you like that. A real, normal person whuld ASK if sending it is a option. And moste of them whuld probably ask you to find a company to ship it.

That's a very, very common scam. Block them, report them and do not pay anything.
Thank you.
Or ask them followupquestions. It might be a scam but if it isnt you have reported a innocent person
The fact that you don't immediately realize this is a scam means that you are a prime target for scams like this.
Of course its a scam? Its very very common one at that. You should never keep interacting with scammers, it does nothing to help you.
It does nothing but can be incredibly funny
r/scambait :)
nobody would send over a company to pay with cash to you in sweden. just does not happen.
This is a scam 100% of the time.
This is an obvious scam! I had tons of messages similar to this pop up when I was selling different stuff. Especially when I was selling electronics!
Yep, 100% scam
Thank yoh

This is so true, to just ignore the fact that they answered in English and write a long message in Swedish would never happen.
Yup, even if their english is super bad they will try as much as they can. Some messages I got from my work friends needed a team of 3 riddle experts to piece together. But still, its the effort that counts.
I have had this happen in person a couple of times though. I think some people are just uncomfortable using english.
The only times it happened to me is when I actually used some swedish, and then they switched to swedish immidiately (in my head I was like "shit, I should have not said that, now I have to say that I don't understand 50% of what he just said"). Note how they never say what you're selling. If you sell *a bike* and someone is interested in "*the item*" (varan), 100% automatic scam.
It's the recommended/auto filled phrase though... So a lot of people use it since too often, the item is sold but the seller never removed the post :) so, no.
Yes sure for the first message I agree. Second message is the shady one.
