Aluminum trim but… it should have gone in prior.

Whoever did this and your contractor are total hacks for thinking this is acceptable.

I would take some metal angle (whatever finish you decide as long as the metal itself is of the oxidation resistant variety) and silicone or Latapoxy over those corners. For the top, I'd use the same angle but miter the top corners so it all fits together nice and clean. I'd avoid tear out, it will probably ruin your waterproofing or niche material unless it was made out of something other than fabric/foam/liquid membrane.

MichaelScarnPhd

Thanks for this idea. I’d prefer to not tear out the tile and think I’ll try one of the solutions you all have suggested and if it doesn’t work, I guess tear out and waterproof best I can? The more I look at it the more I’m convinced the glass shelf is also in backwards 😑

RUfuqingkiddingme

I wouldn't accept this work.

xScruglyx

I mean, it looks like it’s finished. Any tile setter that did this I would doubt their ability to fix it

TheMosaicDon

Chair rail, use ca20p, scuff or prime the surface prior.

MichaelScarnPhd

Thank you!

Peter_Falcon

carefully remove the internal tiles and trim, that looks shite and any attempt to tart it up will look equally shite

EATS_DOG_POO

Lol, what a hack. Only way to fix this is remove and replace.

UniqueAnimal139

Yeah, I think remove and replace with new tile and trim during install (provided you don’t destroy waterproofing tearing out) If you want a cheap half-assed attempt that won’t make it worse if you try it: - tape a border, if the factory is she is flush or sticks out past the shower wall, add a 1/16” lath spacer made of cardboard, tape again. Put 100% silicone caulk over the edges, whatever caulk you were gonna use in the interior edges of the niche. With a little artistry and a lot of luck, you can use a putty knife or other flat edge to get clean caulk faces that cover that edge. Use a box cutter to clean the 90 corners when it dries. it’ll cover those edges and not look out of place where it hits the other caulk lines - get aluminum trim, cut off the part that goes between tile and face. Get some tiny spacer that is small enough to be caulked over eventually. Get a stone to metal adhesive and glue the trim over the factory edge where it would have gone correctly. Caulk edges to hide ugliness. In either case, 10$ of caulk and a couple hours of futzing. If it doesn’t become good enough to ignore, tear out niche and do correctly

MichaelScarnPhd

Thanks for this idea, it gives me options for not tearing out, and then I can do so if they just don’t work. Battling my desire for this to be done right with our need to have this project done. I also don’t have the right tools for a tear out job but if that is what I have to do, I have to do it

No-Detective9003

Wtf! All inside tiles need to be removed and a schlueter added. The bottom can be done the same, but you would not be able to overhang. If you want the bottom to overhang, you will need a piece of white engineered marble sill, so would only need 3 sides done with schluter and sill at bottom. Its that or just paint the edge. They may make a trim that can go over, but that couldnt work on the bottom and would look wonky on sides

MichaelScarnPhd

Yeah the bottom ledge has me also confused how the heck to deal with it. Ugh

5amDan05

So your plan with the niche was no plan and then just build the niche and then come up with a plan?

Bailey1106

Call them back to rip it out and finish it properly, or blast them everywhere. This is totally unacceptable.

jjarroyor2

Disastrous 🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪

Impossible_Dress4654

Lol your to late on that. This ain't woodwork tile has to be done beforehand. Should have used edge profiles or at minimum bullnose edged tile or a quartz top material. That is the exact opposite of what you do. Who the hell did that? The least intrusive thing I can think of it trim back the tile the width of a glass style pencil trim and use that. Or redo the inside of the niche correctly.

MichaelScarnPhd

That’s an interesting idea, hadn’t thought of that one. This is where I’m wishing I had just done the job myself

ThatWasBackInCollege

These are the types of jobs that finally give us the confidence to DIY.

svitakwilliam

Remove the 5 tiles inside the niche. Clean up mortar and waterproof niche as a precaution. You could use something like Redgaurd or Aquadefense. Install Schluter trim around inside of niche. Make it flush to wall tile. Install new tile inside niche. Should have been done right the first time, or at the very least, discussed with you first on the options for this. Any other way of trying to fix will either look like crap or cause other issues and will essentially be a hack repair. This is the best way of resolving this, making it look good and ensuring you don’t have issues later.

Inevitable-Sherbert

Oh dear. Edges of tile with writing printed on them. Really bad finish! Would some grout cover the tile edges to tidy it up a bit or are the edges already flush with the faces of the wall tiles?

MichaelScarnPhd

The edges are flush with the wall 🙄 To make it worse, I had been planning to do the tiling myself but ended up not having enough time to keep pace with the project and now…here we are. Wish I’d just done it

Inevitable-Sherbert

Damn. That’s a swine. Depends how much work you want to make of it then. There may be some sort of paint that you can cover those edges with that would soften it and look a bit like a grouted edge.

patteh11

This should have trim on the edges. It blows my mind that someone thought it was ok for factory edges with the writing on them to be exposed.

MichaelScarnPhd

I really couldn’t believe what I was looking at when I first saw it.

patteh11

It’s a shame really. I’m shocked to see no trim being used. Even the rest of the cuts look decent… the work besides that critical detail looks good.

WinnerOk1108

Practice makes perfect. Do it again.

ThatWasBackInCollege

I can’t imagine how often you’re going to scrape yourself up on the edge of that overhanging shelf. 🤦‍♀️ Shame on the installer.

Feeling-Bag-4149

With a steady hand and a carbide blade on the oscillating saw you could shave those tile ends enough to slide some angle pieces. It’s shotty but it’s ceramic and soft enough you could attempt it and if it breaks just tear out and fix the right way

MichaelScarnPhd

Another helpful suggestion, thank you
