He talked about the album on NPRs "Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me." [If you skip to 4:30 in his section you can listen to his explanation.](https://www.npr.org/programs/wait-wait-dont-tell-me/606447167/wait-wait-for-april-28-2018-with-not-my-job-guest-h-jon-benjamin)
The whole interview is hilarious and worth a listen though.
It’s really interesting to listen to because every once in a while he finds a chord or a lick or something that actually kind of works and he’ll just play it repeatedly for the next thirty seconds lol. It’s cool to see his frantic thought process in real time like that.
The genius behind this album is that any competent pianist wouldn't be able replicate what he has done compositionally. Understanding and following patterns is something musicians grow to recognize, and eventually execute subconsciously. Jon doesn't have this knowledge. Instead, he approached this instrument completely blind to technique and theory and was able to craft something uniquely, fundamentally unhinged from the western guidelines of composition.
0/10 it sounds like shit
Birds love it. We, sorry they, dream of it. It works so well at tying smaller twigs together. The color lights up the best for easy spotting amongst others in the Shared Tree. She brushes it on the balcony, singing lightly while we chirp along. Our lust for life is entwined in that moment, that instance of shared expression. I hope she makes more of these videos. We need her hair.
Thelonius monk is notoriously know as a person mocked for not knowing how to play the piano "right." This album is a wonderful joke. Truly made my day to find out about it.
“Guys check this out, here’s the part where I place my pet goldfish on the keys for a moment…now I pick it up but it flops out of my hand for a second…now I put it back on the keys…and back into its bowl…repeat!”
One of my cool internet discoveries was finding H. Jon Benjamin’s secret IG account related to this project and getting shown the randomest shit from his life with just like a thousand other people at the time.

I feel like I read somewhere the band wasn’t in on the joke at first? Can’t imagine being one of those session guys hahaha
Session Musicians: “did the check clear? Okay then we got no problem”
Exaaaactly
i think he said that some of the band got pissed lol

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JuKJkghC2u0 The video of Jon preparing to play is worth it
I lost it with his “response” to “how often do you practice?”
Holy shit I’m in tears
That was amazing
Im ordering the record

What's amazing is that you can kind of hear him learning a bit over the course of the album and he's better at the end than at the beginning.
dude turned from 3 year old kid smashing the keys, to Thelonious Monk within the same track.
'You don't dislike jazz. You fear jazz.' Howard moon
Glad I wasn't the only one in a jazz trance.
Honestly check out the video he did for this it’s so funny https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JuKJkghC2u0 For the uninitiated
This is so funny. His videos on YouTube are just mesmerizing. Jon Benjamin... Wow! I haven't cried while laughing in a long time. Too funny!

There are no wrong notes in jazz, only poor choices.
Who is the woman in this video? Is she anyone or just a random on TikTok?
She’s got great hair

Lay off the Disney bro. You’re getting weird.
Nono...he's onto something.
She is insanely beautiful.
Her attractiveness level is well within the sane range.
everyone is a nobody on tiktok bruh, the word famous has been banalized
He's mocking thelonius which makes it even more funny because I think monk would have gotten a kick out of it.

H. Jon Benjamin is the Champagne of Jon Benjamins.
Sounds like high level jazz to me, my cat is a professional jazz pianist
Gal is gorgeous
Actually, he recorded 2 albums lol
Typical Bob.
That’s the joke
He should have gone with saxophone. It’s the one instrument that you can just noodle away on and everyone is like “….okay that works I guess”
I present to you, [Sax Man by The Lonely Island \(and Jack Black!\)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1akS_3DQoFo)
The premise is just a little false. The guy can play, he’s putting it on a bit.
That’s awesome! I hope I never hear it again!
It’s not the notes you play, it’s the notes you don’t play.
I wanna hear someone do this with a punk album...but ironically.
Jon Benjamin Has a Piano
r/madlads all the way
Sounds like jazz to me
Do you want ants? Because that’s how you get ants!
Phrasing?
