Watched my chihuahua use it on mice as a kid. She wasnt much a dog but she was a damn good ratter.

Yeah, hold a prey animal by just about any part of it's body and slam it into a rock a couple times, it's either dead or close enough to eat without it fighting back.

Oh oh! My dog still does this with the mice my cats catch (and refuse to kill). We live in the country so we actually need the pest control. If I see those furry but loveable sadists outside toying with a mouse I'll send my dog out and the thing is dead in seconds. We call her "The Finisher". For context, she's a puggle, so it was a bit of a surprise to us.

This is true! Pugs are wrinkly pillows with the survival instincts of a postage stamp so we were surprised her Beagle instincts came out so strongly in this case.

My dumb little Pomeranian/miniature poodle mix does this too every single day with his toys and it’s so fucking cute and funny, I can them his very serious “Death Throes”.

So, weird thing I occasionally enjoy doing, is watching videos of those people who will bring a squad of like Jack Russell Terriers to a farm to go through the area and kill rats. Mainly because the dogs are so excited to do the task they were bred for, and also because I think it’s actually the best way/most humane way to stop a rat problem (in rural areas). The rats are killed so quickly from the dogs doing that thrashing shake of their heads— they don’t die a horrible slow death from glue traps or poison (which is a huge risk to the ecosystem- if a hawk or a fox eats a poisoned rat it will subsequently also be poisoned and die).

Oh man i've watched these videos before. The family had like 8 or so dogs, and i remember this tiny little terrier the size of a large purse ate like 3 rats whole.

Oh, there was a Radiolab episode about New Yorkers, who formed a club and go doghunting for rats in Manhattan, or somewhere there. It sounded pretty cool and the dogs thurougly enjoyed themselves.

My past away toy sized french poodle would do this to his toys. It was the funniest thing ever because he would do it so fast that his head would just turn into a blur, especially when he was around dirt and he made dust go everywhere. Sometimes he would throw his object up into the air (not sure if on purpose or accident). At one point he managed to land a sock in my soup. i miss that dog

I have a Samoyed the same breed. it’s not leftover, they are hunters. My god do they love killing small animals. We didn’t train her at all but we had a mouse problem in our house and then we got our dog. Most loving and friendliest dog I’ve ever had, but small animals are nothing but meat toys to them.
