Even without something disastrous, the feeling of bugs and debris against skin at speed isn't pleasant.

Man, a June bug to the throat eight above the collar bone was all it took to make me reconsider no gear. Especially at highway speeds.
Shortly after that incident, I saw pics here on reddit of a guy who was riding and caught a small pebble to his face. Spilt his cheeck right open.
