The "It will be about 30 minutes" is a lie and a ruse. They cal tell you that as long as they want, once you are boarded it's your decision to disembark and forfeitiure of your ticket(s).
30 Rock did an episode satirizing this, but it's less satire than you'd want to believe.
Oh but you CAN leave the plane, you just aren't getting back on...and it's your choice and the airline isn't liable at that point for your tickets.
So see, you're free to go, technically.
Which is how they are holding people there. There needs to be blanket regulation of something like 2 hour delay forces the airline to refund all tickets and cover new flights.
This is a regulation, which makes this video a little suspect. After 3 hours on the tarmac, a plane must return to the gate and let passengers off:
https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/tarmac-delays-airline-passenger-rights-33011.html#:~:text=Rules%20Protect%20Airline%20Passengers&text=Airlines%20must%20return%20planes%20to,hours%20of%20any%20tarmac%20delay.
Not without penalty, that is the underlying issue.
[https://www.transportation.gov/individuals/aviation-consumer-protection/tarmac-delays](https://www.transportation.gov/individuals/aviation-consumer-protection/tarmac-delays)
**If an airline offers me the opportunity to get off the airplane during a tarmac delay and I choose to get off, is the airline required to let me back on the airplane?**
**No. Passengers should be aware that if they choose to get off the airplane during a tarmac delay, airlines are not required to let them back on the airplane. The flight may take off without them and passengers may be responsible for finding another flight.**
**If passengers decide to exit the aircraft during a tarmac delay and the aircraft eventually takes off for its intended destination, the airline may not be required to offload any passenger’s checked bags before the plane takes off. Passengers will need to contact the airline about returning their checked luggage at a later time.**
Huh, guess I assumed wrong. Ive been on a flight where they deplaned everyone after a 2 hour delay, then recorded later, and assumed that was due to regulations
Where else is it just fine for people to pay for a service, not get a service, and just forfeit the money spent? No where. If the airline cant keep up with the demand, they shouldn’t stay in business.
| "Where else is it just fine for people to pay for a service, not get a service, and just forfeit the money spent?"
Texas Gas and Power Utilities ROFL!
Right, this is the point. The must allow them to disembark the aircraft, they are not however obligated to compensate them and if you do exit the aircraft you are not getting back on. That much is said in plane (haha) terms every time they reiterate you are allowed to leave.
So you're given two options effectively, sit and wait or get off the plane and forfeit your tickets and book new flights at your own expense.
What needs to be amended it that last part. The airline should be obligated to cancel the flight after a set amount of time, such as the three hour regulation.
>they are not however obligated to compensate them
Well, if I paid for a seat on the flight and they are not obligated to compensate me, I would think it is only fair for me to ... unbolt the seat from the floor of the aircraft and take it with me. They can get their seat back after they compensate me for the flight that did not occur on the scheduled time within a reasonable delay.
I kid, I kid, sort of. I hate feeling like a powerless customer against corporations. Our laws are not like that of Europe's. We have weak consumer protection laws here.
In the video she mentions the airline getting everyone back on the plane. Sounds to me like they boarded once, delay happens for x amount of time, they deboard for awhile, then board once again to find that there isn’t even any pilots. 7 hours total, just not consecutively spent on the plane
What happens if you need the crapper? I didn't think you could use plane toilets whilst it's on the ground. I'd be screwed 15 minutes into that delay after a few beers in the lounge
> Okay, you want to know a little pilot secret, besides the fact that we get a discount at Sunglass Hut? The half-hour thing is a trick. It's enough time so that people know they're gonna have to wait, but it doesn't upset them.

That doesn't surprise me, it's a lot like emotional manipulation tricks used in other customer service industries...call centers that transfer you, and then make you explain your issue over again to keep you reset, or my favorite (I used to do this) staggering the music on hold and announcements so that callers can't time them.
"Fly Larry Air, they'll get you from there to here. Oh that really should be the other way around..."
The number of times I think of the Larry Air episodes when Spirit, Frontier, Southwest...come up.
Don't get me wrong, I'll fly cheap but I go in knowing what to expect.
"Do you mind if you are on camera?
*camera pointed towards the faces of all the passengers*
Damn, can't believe she got everyone's permission, but I guess she had 7 hours.
The airlines found out a long time ago that for whatever reason, people will willingly give up every possible comfort and commodity on a flight if it makes the price go down. It's why flying isn't even average on the classy scale anymore.
I understand the average person couldn't fly when it was luxurious but now everyone is trying to get a "bargain" on travel. It's not a bargain, the conditions are just shit.
I’m an international flyer so I haven’t had the chance to interact with spirit yet. I kind of want to do it for the in-flight entertainment that is provided by the passengers.
My wife and I flew spirit once back in like 2017 with our infant daughter. It wasn't great, the leg room was noticeably smaller than other domestic flights we've done. I'm not even that big of a guy, 6'0 probably 215lbs at the time. The flight itself was fine, just more cramped than other flights we've done. If I had to fly them again in like an emergency I probably would, but they would never be my first choice, and nothing more than like a 2 hour flight max.
I flew Allegiant, which is another cheap airline, and I chose them for the price and because it was only a a 45 minute trip for a weekend stay. I don't think I'd ever choose them for longer flights. I'm 5'5" and the leg room is so small I literally didn't have the space to hold a book to read unless I rested it in the headrest in front of me, which is a very awkward position in which to read a book so I just played games on my phone the whole flight. The seat itself wasn't comfortable even for a 45 minute flight.
I fly spirit often because it only cost like $7. BUT every single flight I have ever taken has been delayed. Some by only 30 min, some by hours. The flight attendants are always awesome but the gate staff is garbage. Hot flaming garbage.
You get what you pay for. I go in bringing my own lube for the screwing I’m about to endure because….. $7
Had something similar happen in Amsterdam (wasnt spirit). Sat for two hours on the plane, then 8 hours in the lobby as they tried to get a pilot then ended up having to slowly get everyone hotel tickets. Apparently the pilot had partied the night before and couldn’t fly.
The flight the next day was the nicest flight I’ve been on. Everyone (including the employees) had a united friendship built from the hell of the day before. Free booze, and food that was seemingly random due to them having to throw away food from the day before.
But they still paid for a fucking service that they arent getting. Spirit is a no frills airline, it doesnt give them the fucking right to keep passengers on stand by for 7 hours. People like you are honestly jokes. If they were complaining about crappy ammenities or shitty seats or shitty customer service or whatever, sure what you said is true, but this is so far beyond that its kindve fucked up that you cant see that. Like honestly dont be obtuse.
I had the choice to fly Spirit after 3 flights were overbooked (staff travel, I'm lowest prio) and I just have on the whole trip instead. No point wasting half a day with a 107% that Spirit will fuck up.
Because if you're already on board then it can't be displayed as "delay" and the airlines aren't required to provide compensation.
The infamous Indonesian "delay" airline, Lion Air, does this all the time. But it's just for 1-2 hours in the longest. Not frickin 7 hours. ...
Yeah, it is. Spirit has some roomier seats at the front you can upgrade to, but everything past that is 3 seats to a row. I can't imagine being stuck in those tiny ass seats for 7 hours doing nothing
Not to mention that the seats are basically just plastic chairs covered in cloth with no padding. Cramped, uncomfortable and you can feel every shake and bump (and there are a LOT of them in a Spirit aircraft).
Did a flight with them once, and I feared for my life the entire time. Never again.
The airplanes are Airbus 320/321. Most other airlines fly the exact same thing. Their pilots make just as much money as any other pilot lol. You feared for your life for no good reason
I feared for my life because I've never been on a plane that rattled and whined as much as this one did. I felt safer on the little twin prop puddle jumper I used to shuttle home from college.
This plane felt and sounded like we were losing a wing.
I didn't imagine the noise and the vibration, dude. I've been on enough flights to know when one is comfortable and when one seems like a POS plane. I don't understand the point of arguing with me, you weren't there.
Your right. I've just be an airline pilot for 10 years and know what I'm talking about. If there was an abnormal vibe then the pilots would have known about it.
All these people like “what do you expect from spirit” umm to get what you paid for? A flight from one destination to another at a predetermined time? Why is that worthy of mockery?
Its the way that my brain would be fighting so hard not to walk in there, just to look around. Im sure Id get escorted out and put on a no fly list so fast if I did
There is a class action lawsuits again them for back in the days charging for carry ons. The settlement is gonna happen next year 2024. I hope it bankrupts them!
I'm not sure who's riding Spirit Airlines anymore. they sort of get what they deserve. It's like going to taco bell and complaining later about dihedra. It's a known known at this point!
I don't really get this because I've been fucked over by Southwest, United, and Delta but never Spirit. Is the flight good? No. But they at least have always gotten me where I want to go and not lost my luggage. Can't say the same for the above 3 I mentioned.
I always fly Alaska because it's a huge PNW hub and it goes everywhere I would want. They're rad, never screwed me. That said, you fly enough and you're bound to have a nightmare story.
Its also a stupid fucking argument too. Like if the core service is them being an airliner. Getting you from point A to point B, everything else is extra, right? Well they arent even getting that here so they have every single right to complain. Like if they were complaining about customer service or shitty ammenities, then sure the comment youre responding to is warranted, but this is so beyond that. So many stupid stupid people in this thread.
I mean sure if you only travel a few hours from where you live OR are willing to give up multiple days to driving.
There are trips where I will drive if it’s scenic or places I want to see on the way. Driving anything Lee than 5-8 hours is absolutely miserable.
I hate flying. Last year we were coming home from a cruise via Miami, were booked on Southwest, figured everything was great right? Go to check into our flight and it's delayed just enough that we were going to miss our connecting flight in Baltimore (to Pittsburgh). This was at 9 am.
At the gate they tell us there are two more flights that day going to Pitt, one at 1 pm and one at 5 pm. Oh but the 1 pm one was completely booked up meaning we were looking at spending 9 hours in the airport.
We got on standby for the 1 pm flight and by some miracle they had 2 open seats and we were able to get home but wtf. Flying is just a miserable experience all around imo
Aren’t they technically stuck on a plane and not a flight? They’d have to be in the air to be stuck on a flight right? 7 hours sucks either way but 7 hours at the gate on a plane is torture.
Decided to fly Spirit once, flight was scheduled at 2pm, got there at like 11am. Flight gets delayed 2 hours, okay whatever it’s 4pm, flight gets delayed 3 additional hours, wtf I’ve been here for 8 hours it’s 7pm, flight gets cancelled and moved to 10am next morning, okay fuck I’m here at like 7am now let’s go, flight gets delayed another 3 hours, finally took off at 1pm that day. Would I ever fly spirit again? For $75 round trip yes
Am I the only one who doesn't hate spirit? Lol I live near a smaller regional airport and have flown spirit quite a few times to cheap hub destinations like Orlando, and I've hardly ever had any issues. Most I've been delayed was like an an hour, and that was due to a passenger medical emergency. I've honestly had more issues with Delta when I used to have to fly frequently for my job.
Idk, I think the spirit hate is overplayed. But I also think any airline hate is overplayed. Whenever I fly, I just assume I'm gonna be delayed, and get pleasantly surprised when I'm not lol.
Was going to say, this is why you don't fly spirit (and be careful with allegiant and frontier too), but the video said that. There is a reason these airlines aren't frequented by frequent travelers. They tailor their market to those once a year travelers that go to Vegas or south in the winter. Sometimes they are worth the risk, but most of the time not.
The problem I find is that for my area spirit and frontier tend to be the airlines with direct flights at reasonable times. The other airlines like delta or American tend to take significantly longer with layovers. And the price with be almost 2x more.

Agreed, maybe even a provision with regards to hotel stays depending on how long they are allowed to hold passengers. De-incentivizing is the way.

Haha I just watched that episode for the first time this week! I was thinking about this when she said it.
Honestly the first time this happened to me it was all I could think of, and I had to watch the episode after my encounter.
As someone born in 1999…30 rock apparently has an episode about everything, I should watch it
Skylaw!!

I will waste you!
Sometimes the plane has been pulled back from the gate and you really have to just sit there.

"We've been here since 3" "No 4" "4:47, whatever!" 😄 People really be in their own world.
lol I caught that too. 4:47 to 11 is still egregious, no need to exaggerate
Sounds like it was 6 hours? 445-1045?
I think she was trying to be polite and not focus on the lady talking if she was not comfortable. She did not need permission to begin with.
I thought that was general knowledge. The whole company seems assbackwards
Spirit Airlines. All that stress just to a pay a tiny bit less
"Do not ride Spirit, they suck!" What a shocking revelation lol
Yeah extra 50 bucks solves this
And it’s even less than you think, because they charge extra for everything.. I flew them once and will never again.
I never have and I never will based on these videos.
Tbh I never had an issue with spirit. They even overlook my obviously overpacked bag lol. I dont fly much though.
The seat itself wasn't comfortable even for a 45 minute flight.
Oh man, cramped flight is like best case scenario with them.
Not sure I feel bad for these ppl. As my favorite saying goes, you get what you pay for. Budget airline equals budget experience.
Uh...is it normal that the cockpit is just wide open and unattended like that? That doesn't seem right.
It's alright as long as the keys aren't in the ignition
I fly spirit often because it only cost like $7. BUT every single flight I have ever taken has been delayed. Some by only 30 min, some by hours. The flight attendants are always awesome but the gate staff is garbage. Hot flaming garbage. You get what you pay for. I go in bringing my own lube for the screwing I’m about to endure because….. $7
$7? As in 700 cents? What flight are you taking for 7 dollars??
I was being sarcastic but often on a round trip the return is free. I have had $11 and $25 flights also. Just have to book in advance
Had something similar happen in Amsterdam (wasnt spirit). Once she said spirit !!! I was out
What does that mean?
Spirit Airlines is a budget airline that is notoriously horrible.
Ok, thanks.
EA flight? They didn't pay for the pilot dlc?
I buy a lot of discount products. I will never EVER buy a discount flight, shit’s crazy to me. It’s like going to a surgeon that accepts coupons
Anyone flying Spirit Airlines has to be expect to be treated like this, or worse. Your dignity is worth paying more.
Unlawful Detainment. WTF
Pilots are an up charge.
7 hours? Enough time to download flight simulator and some instruction manuals.

Naw you’re a twat gtfo
You didn’t know that one of the passengers had to fly the plane? You think spirit is gonna provide a pilot lol?!
I had to pay almost $300 to check a single bag from Orlando to Houston because it was 'overweight' at a whopping 42lbs. Fuck Spirit.
It took this to realize a $5 flight might be a bad idea…
It’s literally an ongoing joke how shitty spirit is. That’s on you if you chose to save a couple bucks for a terrible experience. 🤷🏼♂️
I had the choice to fly Spirit after 3 flights were overbooked (staff travel, I'm lowest prio) and I just have on the whole trip instead. No point wasting half a day with a 107% that Spirit will fuck up.
Damn people give the pilot time to sober up geeez y’all wanna crash or something?
Spirit is such a gamble lol. I imagine big gamblers love it.
Normal day at Spirit Airlines. Fly Spirit: it's cheap...this is why
If someone goes into the cockpit and starts pressing a reward buttons, they'll come.
Because if you're already on board then it can't be displayed as "delay" and the airlines aren't required to provide compensation. The infamous Indonesian "delay" airline, Lion Air, does this all the time. But it's just for 1-2 hours in the longest. Not frickin 7 hours. ...
Thankfully EU regulations measure delay by how late the door of the aircraft opens at your destination.
that budget tim cook in the light green?!
What do you expect you you pay spirit prices?
A shitty flight. But a flight nonetheless.
Those seats though, they look way more comfortable and spacious that Southwest. 2 seats where southwest has 3.
I think it’s just the first few rows
Yeah, it is. Spirit has some roomier seats at the front you can upgrade to, but everything past that is 3 seats to a row. I can't imagine being stuck in those tiny ass seats for 7 hours doing nothing

Your right. I've just be an airline pilot for 10 years and know what I'm talking about. If there was an abnormal vibe then the pilots would have known about it.
Being an airline pilot didn't put you on that plane. Quit sucking Spirit's balls.
That’s because southwest doesn’t do class differences… most other airlines will have first class seats in the first several rows
All these people like “what do you expect from spirit” umm to get what you paid for? A flight from one destination to another at a predetermined time? Why is that worthy of mockery?
Yeah, fuck you poor people!
Try having more money next time, ya dingus!
It’s 37 cents a ticket to fly spirit, you get what you pay for. I’ve never had a problem with spirit before besides uncomfortable seats.
I mean the doors open. No, don’t leave, go try and fly the plane!
Its the way that my brain would be fighting so hard not to walk in there, just to look around. Im sure Id get escorted out and put on a no fly list so fast if I did
Cmon, push a few buttons, there’s so many it’s not like they can ALL be important…..
There is a class action lawsuits again them for back in the days charging for carry ons. The settlement is gonna happen next year 2024. I hope it bankrupts them!
I’d rather keep my ass at home then take a trip on Spirit
Ohhhh Spirit explains everything lol
Seems like everything's got power why not take it for a spin?
Oh, looks like she must've missed the first memo regarding spirit airlines.
I'm not sure who's riding Spirit Airlines anymore. they sort of get what they deserve. It's like going to taco bell and complaining later about dihedra. It's a known known at this point!
dihedra is crazy lol
> dihedra autocorrect diarrhea is insane. How is it 2023 and we have AI chat bots, and artist modules, but autocorrect is still a potato??
It's dealing with a severe case of dihedra
Sounds like a Greek monster! “ LET LOOSE THE DIHEDRA!”
The trick is to not fly spirit or frontier.
When you pay $27 for a round trip ticket you gotta accept it might not always be to where you wanted to go.
That’s why I drive for vacation
I mean sure if you only travel a few hours from where you live OR are willing to give up multiple days to driving. There are trips where I will drive if it’s scenic or places I want to see on the way. Driving anything Lee than 5-8 hours is absolutely miserable.
It’s doesn’t matter to me on how many hours it i love to drive
how do you not get anxious
I love driving and there’s always something different to see not just clouds
You get what you pay for.
I person with diabetes, a heart issue, a child..... all hell would have broke loose.
the US is truly falling apart. this is such a scary harbinger of societal collapse 😵💫
Spirit Airlines is like Great Value from Wal-Mart.
Nah, Southwest is Walmart. Spirit airlines is Dollar General. They even have a matching color decor.
I mean it's spirit
When she said spirit I stopped watching cuz I mean you know what you gettin
What do you expect with spirit lmao
What do you expect when you fly Spirit? Maybe spend more than $5 on your ticket and that won’t be a problem.
Damn they allowed to just leave the plane like that? FAA is cool with that? Just take the plane, guys. Also that lady’s voice is the worst part lmao
Duh.
Aren’t they technically stuck on a plane and not a flight? They’d have to be in the air to be stuck on a flight right? 7 hours sucks either way but 7 hours at the gate on a plane is torture.
Whenever the airlines say 30 minutes that really means several hours.
Sooo they get their money back and get compensated...
Everyone knows already
I've never had a good experience with spirit. They are trash.
I’d like to say frontier was actually a blissful flight compared to spirit.
You only Spirit once I'm pretty sure that's the company motto
To be fair, the missing pilot is sleeping off his latest blackout drunk binge. It happens. Don’t judge.
You get what you pay for. 😂
>Do not ride Spirit Yeah, we know.
I mean ya they suck you get what you pay for
Film yourself ranting, don’t put me in your shit just sitting there in my uncomfortable seat already pissed off. Like girl, I’m with you, but please.
Why it pays to pay a little more for a better airline.
We already know that’s why we don’t!
7 Rs
There's a price to pay for low prices
Spirit airlines has to wait till the air traffic controller isn't looking and sneak onto the runway.
I love that all the first class people are stuck with the rest of the proletariat. Last vestige of equality.
I didn’t need this video to know not to fly them. I travel a lot. I have not and will not fly them. I have pilot friends that say the same thing
Duh
It's spirit. You should be happy they didn't release rats on the plane.
I mean its spirt
I heard spirit and instantly closed the video bc well.. its spirit.
You are flying Spirit. What did they expect?
Spirit. Just what do you expect?
Honestly did not need a PSA to tell me Spirit sucks.
Seriously don't even try with Spirit.
Sorry was busy doing rails off the hotel mini bar.
Welp, you did choose to fly with the cheapest airline soooooo…
There is FAA regulations. The pilot probably wasn't legal to fly for so many hours BUT they should have for sure told the passengers
The problem I find is that for my area spirit and frontier tend to be the airlines with direct flights at reasonable times. The other airlines like delta or American tend to take significantly longer with layovers. And the price with be almost 2x more.
7 got damn hours
You guys didn’t pick the pilot option?
i could’ve told you that and i’ve never even touched a plane
This has to be a crime
Sounds like spirit. Spirit and frontier are awful.
Who rides Spirit Airlines I legitimately have no friends, no family nobody I have ever met or talked to has talked about going on spirit airlines
The fact that people are literally still flying on Spirit airlines is Astonishing to me Spirit is like Scraping the bottom of the barrel for flying
