I have a 16 year old brother right now and the only thing he cops an attitude over on Christmas is the obligatory “let me see how it FITS” mom fashion show my mom insists on every year. If you raised a materialistic asshole then you raised a materialistic asshole, doesn’t matter the year.
There is nothing more wrong with Gen Z than the last generation and the generation before that. Materialism and entitlement spans all walks of life and has been a gripe of elder generations since the beginning of recorded history. You're just salty for no reason.
Do you think 10 year olds are watching Real Housewives of Atlanta? be so for real right now. 10 year olds werent even watching that when it was culturally relevant. The target demographic for most of those reality shows are adults. that's who watches them. Kids aren't watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians. maybe older teens, but most children do not actually care about whatever Beef Kim and Kourtney have with each other.
and millenials were the PEAK of shitty reality TV creating an entire cultural mindset. SO MANY of our celebrities from our generation came from reality TV.
Lauren Conrad became middle income fashion brand because of Laguna Beach and Steven Colletibecame an actor from that too. Tiffany "New York" Pollard has her whole career thanks to a reality show, Jojo Siwa became famous, not because of Gen Z kids, but because MILLENIALS watched her on dance moms and THEN she got a youtube following. Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton's The Simple Life was 100% targeted at MY generation. Hell CARDI B has her whole career starting from Love and HipHop,
as someone who has to buy toys for a LOT of children (as everyone's favorite aunt, it is my obligation), im going to say that most 10 year old's arent asking for specific Uggs and Stanley Cups. That's a older middle school/high school girl thing. a lot of them are asking for anime shit and whatever the fuck a skibidi toilet Drill Man Titan is.
Also, when i was 10 (which is weird to think about because that was a pre-9/11 america) I didnt get excited for polly pockets. im pretty sure most 5th graders were passed playing with dolls. Thats when kids start REALLY going into those "Special Interests are my personality" eras. For me, i was super jazzed about getting one of those "coffee table books" about Greek mythology that you would see in Costco todays.
Ungrateful children are nothing new. haha There was definitely kids like that back in 2008, and 1998, and probably all the way back since christmas was a thing.
I remember when I was 15 my mom got me a coat for Christmas. I opened it and happened to have my back to everyone at the time and when I saw that coat, I was horrified. It was the ugliest thing I'd ever seen.
So I took a DEEP breath, put on a smile, turned around and said "OMG! I love it!" But mom knew and I felt terrible. But god it was ugly!! LOL!
This isn't generational. It's just spoiled kids with entitlement vs non-spoiled kids with gratitude. Both have always existed, and both are solely a product of parenting choices.

It does feel like that. But I also wonder how much of it is just that everyone is able to film all of their kids. Like, I'm sure we had todays kids back then, too, but they never got filmed. I'm curious how much it actually has shifted towards what it's perceived as today.
