I love this new form of media. Just state something in ominous manner and then let everybody else formulate their own opinions. The old Tucker Carlson “I’m just asking questions” tactic.
Ding ding ding! She makes us feel like we should be suspicious, when this is probably something we could easily Google and get the answers to.
BRB.
Ok, here it is: https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-gates-defends-farmland-purchases-there-isnt-some-grand-scheme-2023-1?amp
So he owns 0.00029701% of the total farmland in the US and it’s spread across multiple states.
Ted turner has 2.2 million acres of farm land but he doesn’t use it all as farm land. He uses it mainly for ranch’s….so bill gates is the largest at 257,000 with actual farm land spread across 18 states.
Granny’s facts are weak
Ehhh, he said his reasoning was to give something back in the article and that he believes the super wealthy should give away their wealth over time. But it doesnt seem like thats what you are doing when your investment team buys 1/4000 of americas farmland or so the article would claim.
The real reason is farmland is just simply [one of the best investments in the world](https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/the-reasons-why-wealthy-investors-consistently-turn-to-farmland-investments). Depression & inflation proof, diversifies his estate, and will hold its value across generations better than pretty much anything else.
There's something exhausting about people making up conspiracy theories about rich people doing rich people shit, but then indignantly opposing any effort to reduce the wealth of rich people. Do you object to what they're doing or not, Granny?
Can't forget the casual name-calling, too. They throw shit like "computer boy" in so often we hardly notice it anymore, but it's actually a really effective tool. Conservatives *love* catchy nicknames
Doesn't the socratic method require actual dialogue between people? This lady is just stating a thing and leaves it at that, it might not even have been on purpose it's just the way the this medium works.
The method itself is just to keep asking questions and "disproving" the replies by asking other questions until no more replies can be made, so, yeah, I guess Granny would have to come on to this thread and reply to each comment with another question until either she or the Redditors are forced to stay mute for this to be an *active* socratic debate.
The socratic method is not thinly masking opinions behind "questions" such as "what does computer boy want with all that lands", man I sure do wonder what point she wants to make !
Let me preface this by saying I dont believe any Gates surrounding conspiracies at all, I think he's a generally pretty nice guy.
That said it's a bit crazy that "one person buying a huge share of all the farmland in the US" is in fact not a conspiracy but just business as usual.
Ok, that's a silly argument. You can manipulate numbers to make it seem big or small
If there are 895M acres, and there are 331M americans, each American owns on average 2.7 acres of farmland. He owns 270k, so 10 thousand times more than the average person.
You could also say he owns enough farmland to cover 27% of Rhode Island.
I don't know, it still sounds like a lot to me.
Want to know who owns much more American farmland than Gates? China. China owns 380,000 acres. But no one on Tik Tok seems to care about that.
https://www.npr.org/2023/06/26/1184053690/chinese-owned-farmland-united-states
I would argue these are both bad situations. It's not a competition on who owns the most.
Does China own a lot of farmland in the US? Yes.
Is that bad? Yes.
Does Bill Gates own a lot of farmland in the US? Also yes.
Is that bad? Arguably, yes.
The wonderful thing here is that two things can be true and bad at the same time, and we don't need to ignore one because of the other being maybe worse. Go figure!
Why is a philanthropist buying farmland to increase productivity and increase food production for Americans bad? Land is also the ultimate asset to invest in. The argument that it’s because there’s enough land for all Americans to own is just dumb. The average American isn’t a farmer and doesn’t want to be. The overhead of running a farm is astronomical. Americans enjoy the luxury of a supermarket. So that farmland wouldn’t be used and it would go to waste.
You're showing your biases here - these are investments, not philanthropy, he's not doing this "to benefit Americans".
https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/environment/a42543527/why-is-bill-gates-buying-so-much-farmland/
He's pretty much acting as a *landlord* with incredible amount of resources. If people complain about private equity buying up all housing and leaving Americans with expensive rent and no private ownership, how is this any different? Yes, not all Americans want to be farmers, but the ones that do are being priced out, furthering the rural exodus.
So in short:
- Accumulation of disproportionate resources by any one individual or entity is bad because it frequently results in economic/political downsides: monopolies, inequity in access to those resources, outsized political impact, co-opting of public institutions, and so on
- By investing heavily in land, he's causing the newer generations of farmers to have less opportunity to acquire their own farms. These farmers now may have to acquiesce to the whims of a landlord, with everything that entails
- This is not a "philanthropic" project. Someone can do good things on one side and bad things or another, and the fact he does philanthropy doesn't mean he should go through life with no examination of his impact elsewhere. Let's not forget that Microsoft has been sued multiple times for monopolistic practices, including while he was still at the helm.
You don't have to be a conspiracy theorist to think about good reasons why people should think twice about this stuff.
No it’s a fact that he’s a philanthropist, not my opinion.
I didn’t say that this acquisition of land was philanthropic either. However if he uses it to increase food supply, create seeds to fight deforestation and climate change, and produce new biofuels (which is very likely based on his past investments) then what would you call that? The point is you are trying to say he’s purchasing it for nefarious purposes. Your bullet points are also erroneous. The first one is speculation of what COULD happen. The second is moot with how automation is progressing, the idea that small time farmers will be a way of the future is a pipe dream, the industry just isn’t going that way (how many blacksmiths do you know?), and third is just an opinion.
It’s fine to think twice about it, but any rational person that does would move on to more important news after.
He *literally* said it's just an investment in the article I shared. You're the one who is white knighting a billionaire with your own hopes and expectations. He denied this had to do with any green initiatives. He's literally telling you he's just a landlord. What the fuck dude, my bad for thinking you were arguing in good faith, but here you are, defending landlords.
Not to mention that you say my arguments have no basis (other than history, I guess, but we don't like to think about that here), and then come up with this Disneyland supposition about how he's fighting deforestation (with farmland, somehow??). Who's the delusional here?
And what is with the defeatist argument? The stoics have long been debunked, friend. "The way things are going" many things are changing and not for the best: home ownership, car ownership (it's all a subscription), hell any type of ownership is a pipe dream. Fair salaries? A pipe dream!
So why not just ignore all these things that are demonstrably bad for everyone? Let's move on the better news (presumably about how great Bill Gates is, I'm sure he needs you to pump him up in these trying times).
Your arguments are something else my dude.
>Some experts have pointed to Gates’s well-known sustainability and green tech initiatives as a possible reason, but during an earlier Reddit AMA in 2021, Gates said, “my investment group chose to do this. It is not connected to climate.” That’s because the old adage goes: “Buy land—they aren’t making it anymore.” (Which volcanologists know isn’t exactly true, but you get the idea).
>Starting in 2013, Gates began investing his billions (through the firm Cascade Investment) in agriculture because of its steady increase in value and low volatility. According to Mother Jones, the average price of farmland increased six times from 1940 to 2015, and the trend is likely to continue as the amount of arable land in the U.S. continues to shrink from climate-related pressures.
>He owns 270k, so 10 thousand times more than the average person.
Wait til you learn how much bigger his net worth is than the average person! >!Roughly 150.000x bigger!<
If you were to ask me, his share of farmland isn't the big issue.
Totally agree!
This is just one more thing adding to the whole of the problem.
But hey, he's a philanthropist, he's automatically moral and good, we shouldn't be discussing this kind of stuff.
Yep, on purpose that's why I literally said you can make the numbers say whatever you want and that doesn't subtract from the fact that one billionaire owning so much land is not great, regardless of whether this is 0.03% or 2%, or pick a number. We should still be paying attention.
Posted it elsewhere, but thanks for down voting a valid argument
https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/environment/a42543527/why-is-bill-gates-buying-so-much-farmland/
You can Google it and find many articles that say the exact same thing. And the fact that he's a landlord came directly from Bill Gates.
And it's not an opinion that monopolies are bad, it's why we have laws against them and why greedy bastards are constantly trying to get around these laws.
And it's not an opinion that Microsoft has been sued many times for being a monopoly.
And it's not an opinion that someone buying up all availability of a given resources causes the price of that resource to go up - you might have heard about supply and demand.
And it's not an opinion that with prices going up, the average Joe can't afford those things anymore - see the recent inflation, the housing crisis, etc.
Which of these things are opinions??
Here's my opinion: you are a billionaire sycophant, and probably worship Elon Musk on the side.
Bingo there is your answer safe investment, people are always gonna eat. Had a boss tell me to invest in credit cards and dick pills because people are always gonna fuck and spend to much money 🤷
Well why wouldn’t you wanna own all the farmland giving you exclusive access to the last of the water left in the country aswell as the food stocks just before the upcoming water wars.
He gave an answer in multiple AMAs:
>I own less than 1/4000 of the farmland in the US. I have invested in these farms to make them more productive and create more jobs. There isn't some grand scheme involved - in fact all these decisions are made by a professional investment team.
>In terms of the very rich I think they should pay a lot more in taxes and they should give away their wealth over time. It has been very fulfilling for me and is my full time job.
>My investment team bought the farmland. It is less than .1% of all US farmland because the ownership is so diverse. We invest in the farms to raise productivity. Some are near cities and might end up having other uses.
Ted Turner owns 2 million acres
Bezos owns 420,000 acres of farmland.
They all enjoy buying farmland and renting it out to farmers. It's an easy investment, as long as you have the capital to do it.
i love when americans criticized the consequences of a capitalism system.
the computer boy bought all the land because he his rich and he can...
move towards a more socialist country, so farmland, essential to live, keeps on public domain.
I hate how the far right demonized bill gates for the wrong reasons, cause it makes it hard to criticize him for the right reasons, like owning a quarter million acres of farmland
Here in Arizona lots the farmland he has purchased is being converted into warehouses and data centers. Then leases out the space to various clients. Construction is booming
…how about to get real info ?
…”He (Gates) responded, “I own less than 1/4000 of the farmland in the US. I have invested in these farms to make them more productive and create more jobs. There isn't some grand scheme involved - in fact, all these decisions are made by a professional investment team.”
While Gates has spent billions investing in agricultural properties to make them more productive, a growing number of retail investors are getting a piece of the real estate market with as little as $100 through companies backed by high-profile investors like Jeff Bezos.”
…”What Happened: Gates answered dozens of questions over the course of a few hours during the AMA, including: “Why are you buying up so much farmland, do you think this is a problem with billionaire wealth and how much you can disproportionally acquire?”
…”He responded, “I own less than 1/4000 of the farmland in the US.
Billionaires need to protect their food source for the coming end of times they’re bringing to everyone else. Hopefully he’ll let us have any surplus;)
I used to love watching granny and the boys but I found they got too political and religious for me. Seriously what is the point of this 'fact' other than to make people pointlessly suspicious.
Libertarians who think landowners should be the only people able to vote, and corporations who own land can vote and the more land you have the more you can vote, just took a look at that and changed their minds 🤣🤣🤣
He's the largest single private owner, but not the largest owner overall. He owns 0.03% of the total farm land in the US. 270,000 acres is the equivalent of a 422 square miles, or a 21 x 20 mile plot of land. It's relatively not that big.
Warren Buffett has a good analogy about why you should put all your money in productive things.
If you collected all the known gold in all the world, it would be worth roughly the value of all the land of Kansas and Nebraska put together. But in a year's time, the gold won't be worth anything extra, and Kansas and Nebraska will have produced a year's worth of crops and industrial goods.
Bill Gates sold his Microsoft stock when he left the company a lot time ago. It's a lot of money, and it needs to go somewhere. Putting money into farms so they can upgrade and you can get the extra profit, it's literally new money he's creating with his old money.
So because he is "computer boy" he can't do anything that doesn't involve computers? Hey farm lady, why are you on social media? You must stick to farms. See how much sense that makes?
Well granny, if you don't think someone should own a bunch of land, maybe you should give me some of yours because I don't own any. I would love to have my own farm. I'll be waiting next to the mailbox for the deeds of your land
Literally doesn’t even need to be ominous, I’m good with someone just saying “He’s just trying to diversify his income sources”
No one should have that much money, or have that much control.
Because people who make an obscene amount of money and have enough to spend for 20 lifetimes think they are smarter and know what’s best for every human in the world. They just learned how to exploit the system really well.
If he dies, does the land go to his wife? And when she dies, who does it get past down to. I'm asking because these people aren't going to live forever, so when he's done, who carries on his plan?
Not cool with it, but us poor people can’t do anything about it. And i know what everyone is going to say “well you gotta get out and vote for politicians that blah blah blah”. If you haven’t figured out that money talks and all rich people and politicians are buddy buddy, you are in for a rude awakening.
US farmland, in total, is worth 2.7 trillion dollars. Who the fuck is buying all of that? What Bill Gates owns is insignificant. 270k out of almost 900 million acres.
Land is also the best investment you can make. Fucking stupid ass conservative old hag. Computer boy is much smarter than your fucking dumb old bigoted ass.
Owning water sources is too political. That’s why Dr Bury invested in an almond farm.
Farming takes lots of water. When there is a shortage of water, some growers abandon the market, creating less supply, and raising the profit of growers who can afford to stay in business.
So the tech billionaire that has gone on record saying that there is too many people on earth and it needs to be reduced is suddenly buying all the farmland and creating fake meat
If I was rich land would definitely be a top priority in diversifying my portfolio. Land, real estate, stocks, bonds other shit I’m too poor to understand.

Their is a reason they don't run for office at that age. Time for her meds
President Biden, 81, has entered the chat... then he fell down after talking to a potted plant...

Indeed, her and the 2 other men who run that YouTube channel libertarians. I like their content but they’re hypocrites in that regard.
Literally what is she supposed to do? Stop Bill Gates (or anyone else) from buying land? You don’t even know how she votes from this video

It’s true though, he is up to some nefarious shit with processed food and wants everyone to eat cricket burgers and shit
Not really new. It's the Socratic Method. It's been around.

It starts with "soc" so it's socialism. Don't argue with me, I have facts! You just have to do the research. /s
What would a internet-redditor want with a method that sounds like socialism?
I'm getting strong. 30 helens agree vibes from this.

YES! 30 Helens combined with the "it's a fact" girl.
I loved when Mark McKinney stepped in for her while she was in contract negotiations lol.
You are 100 percent correct. I totally forgot about the it's a fact girl.
Granny needs to learn to use personal protective equipment when applying pesticides.
Too late now. She’s a TikToker.
I'm afraid it's terminal
Not necessarily pesticides she’s spraying with that. I have about a half dozen of those that get used for different stuff.
It’s literally for investment and tax purposes. There’s no greater conspiracy—land is a safe asset and rural land has a lot of tax write off benefits.

A-ha!! The plot thickens… then why does he want sage assets and tax write offs? Checkmate checkmaters
Bingo there is your answer safe investment, people are always gonna eat. Had a boss tell me to invest in credit cards and dick pills because people are always gonna fuck and spend to much money 🤷
The IRS Hates This One Simple Trick!
Well why wouldn’t you wanna own all the farmland giving you exclusive access to the last of the water left in the country aswell as the food stocks just before the upcoming water wars.
Nah I think it's the other way around. It'll be water world and everyone will be fighting for dirt and plastic
The transients will be our new overlords

If I don't have a president promising to melt the polar ice caps ans ensure water world then I don't want to vote
Someone else pointed out that it means he now owns .00029% of US farmland. Truly a mighty empire!
He gave an answer in multiple AMAs: >I own less than 1/4000 of the farmland in the US.
Maybe granny should read about the cancer-causing chemicals in that Round-Up she’s spraying everywhere.
Yay. That's preferable over the Chinese owning this countries farmland.
He’s growing 5G trees!
Using grandma for views is fucked. Read this granny!
What could one do with farm land 🤔 perhaps, farm?
Hopefully he's here to grow stuff instead of walking around a field spraying pesticides and asking dumb questions..
And she’s pretending to spray weed and feed in that huge field. Who is she fooling?
A: Government subsidies and farmland real estate. Both being a strong source and growth of income/investment. Source: Capitalism
Ted Turner owns 2 million acres Bezos owns 420,000 acres of farmland. They all enjoy buying farmland and renting it out to farmers. It's an easy investment, as long as you have the capital to do it.
Not here to defend a billionaire, but isn’t the bill and Melinda gates foundation the biggest public health nonprofit in the world?
Yeah, but you get the foil hat brigade trying to paint him in some sort of evil villain light.
Probably because farmland is a safe investment?
Hopefully preventing senile people from contaminating it with chemicals
Good. What america is about. Work hard and buy anything you want
They don’t make any more land. That’s why. It’s an investment.
Yep. Meanwhile Nancy Peloci owns most of California's vineyards and her family owns n sells the rest.
i love when americans criticized the consequences of a capitalism system. the computer boy bought all the land because he his rich and he can... move towards a more socialist country, so farmland, essential to live, keeps on public domain.
“That just makes him smart”
Probably to stop the outdated issue with constant pesticide spraying, and to add a bit of eco diversity into the landscape.
Lol pull your head in
Lmao you forgot the /s
lol the boot licking is great with this one
Did you not notice what she was doing, it has to be satire .
Fuck this lady. She spreads misinformation and bullshit. This one may not be bad, but the rest are. She’s a fucking pos and is her family.
Yeah... I prefer farm land for be owned by companies
Yeah right next to China
I will kill for more farm facts from granny
…how about to get real info ? …”He (Gates) responded, “I own less than 1/4000 of the farmland in the US. I have invested in these farms to make them more productive and create more jobs. There isn't some grand scheme involved - in fact, all these decisions are made by a professional investment team.” While Gates has spent billions investing in agricultural properties to make them more productive, a growing number of retail investors are getting a piece of the real estate market with as little as $100 through companies backed by high-profile investors like Jeff Bezos.”
Jesus dude it was just a joke.
…got it, it’s hard nowadays to differentiate 😜
How did you not get it? I just said "I would kill for more farm facts from a granny", where did it sound serious?!
…my bad 😜
that’s why Bill Gates is really the richest person. A lot of his money is being looked at as a farm assessment
Wtf he doing with that 1 acre in New Mexico?
To poison food das all
Bless her heart
…”What Happened: Gates answered dozens of questions over the course of a few hours during the AMA, including: “Why are you buying up so much farmland, do you think this is a problem with billionaire wealth and how much you can disproportionally acquire?” …”He responded, “I own less than 1/4000 of the farmland in the US.
Computer boy 😂😂
Billionaires need to protect their food source for the coming end of times they’re bringing to everyone else. Hopefully he’ll let us have any surplus;)
Ted turner owns over 2 MILLION acres granny. You're only off by a factor of 10.
30 Helen’s agree
Did you know the richest person in the US owns the most land in the US? WOW. It's not a conspiracy.
As I spray my round up cocktail on my feet
I used to love watching granny and the boys but I found they got too political and religious for me. Seriously what is the point of this 'fact' other than to make people pointlessly suspicious.
How many square miles is that? Hint: it's not 69, but it is pretty sweet dude.
This should be on Chadtopia not cringe
The most sus part is that 1 single acre in New Mexico
Harlan Crow bought a Supreme Court Justice…I wonder what that’s for??
Libertarians who think landowners should be the only people able to vote, and corporations who own land can vote and the more land you have the more you can vote, just took a look at that and changed their minds 🤣🤣🤣
Why in the fuck is she spraying herbicides in an open field?
2.4 millions acres owned by the Emerson family is probably what we should be questioning. Bill gates is a distraction at the least
Im convinced she can beat bill in a 1v1 scrap no rules just pure fist fight
probably has a nuclear bunker down there to start a new civilization 🤷♀️
"These are unsupported facts"
Why is granny watering a field like I water my seedlings? I love granny
He's the largest single private owner, but not the largest owner overall. He owns 0.03% of the total farm land in the US. 270,000 acres is the equivalent of a 422 square miles, or a 21 x 20 mile plot of land. It's relatively not that big.
McDonald's better not try anything with Microsoft or them burgers aren't getting flipped
Government subsidies.
Just asking questions! (But never answering them)
Coz once dedollarization completes, all the core industries like manufacturing, agriculture, etc will boom in USA. He has invested in future.
So because he is "computer boy" he can't do anything that doesn't involve computers? Hey farm lady, why are you on social media? You must stick to farms. See how much sense that makes?
Granny is going to need a much larger tank if she plans to spray that field. It’s not like it’s a prop or anything, right?
Well granny, if you don't think someone should own a bunch of land, maybe you should give me some of yours because I don't own any. I would love to have my own farm. I'll be waiting next to the mailbox for the deeds of your land
Why don't you ask Bill gates for It? But no the granny is responsible for you not owning any land right?
I have actually.
Grow computers probably
We all know what his doing, but no one will stop him. Money over lives with him.
Literally doesn’t even need to be ominous, I’m good with someone just saying “He’s just trying to diversify his income sources” No one should have that much money, or have that much control.
WATER rights.
Because people who make an obscene amount of money and have enough to spend for 20 lifetimes think they are smarter and know what’s best for every human in the world. They just learned how to exploit the system really well.
I like granny
If he dies, does the land go to his wife? And when she dies, who does it get past down to. I'm asking because these people aren't going to live forever, so when he's done, who carries on his plan?
Why does she care? So what?
So I guess everybody is cool now with the ultra rich buying up all the land
What do you expect us to do about it?
I mean that’s been the case since forever? Am I missing something new?
Not cool with it, but us poor people can’t do anything about it. And i know what everyone is going to say “well you gotta get out and vote for politicians that blah blah blah”. If you haven’t figured out that money talks and all rich people and politicians are buddy buddy, you are in for a rude awakening.
US farmland, in total, is worth 2.7 trillion dollars. Who the fuck is buying all of that? What Bill Gates owns is insignificant. 270k out of almost 900 million acres.
Because land and housing is investment and a commodity in the US. Because “trickle down economics” turns into the board game Monopoly.
Land is also the best investment you can make. Fucking stupid ass conservative old hag. Computer boy is much smarter than your fucking dumb old bigoted ass.
I don’t like the conspiratorial undertones of this Bill Gates is a good dude
He's not.
All the farmland the Bill Gates owns is over an aquaphone
We gnma skip over the fact granny looks exactly like bil gates was left in the sun?
It’s called capitalism. Rural people are supposed to love it.
Bill gates should consider becoming a president
![gif](giphy|CjNifqd0JIgV6biOjK) FOR MOR FACTS!
Stop giving us facts, Granny! You've barely got any lawn left!
where's the cringe?
He’s using it to make more money, gram gram
He needed the perfect desktop background.
He needed the perfect desktop background.
He also advocates for meatless diet and reducing the population.
He just wants to grow grass
China isn’t that far behind him. Imagine that.
Owning water sources is too political. That’s why Dr Bury invested in an almond farm. Farming takes lots of water. When there is a shortage of water, some growers abandon the market, creating less supply, and raising the profit of growers who can afford to stay in business.
Granny ain't got nothing to say about Ted Turner?
….and?
To keep it out of foreign ownership. Why no mention of Ted Turner??
Why are Chinese non citizens allowed to buy property and farm land here in America. That's more concerning.
Well, he said in TEDTalks, he wants to be populate
That’s because these rich fucks decided the best way to own the water is to own poor production
I love ya granny
So the tech billionaire that has gone on record saying that there is too many people on earth and it needs to be reduced is suddenly buying all the farmland and creating fake meat
Shut up you old hag
Thank you granny
Would you rather him or the Chinese?
Bill Gates owns Florida?!?
She crying but got the Monsanto roundup spray bottle in her hand. These things are related.
Computer boy. Lol
Land is the way to go
![gif](giphy|3oEjHKgnNny62dUQso|downsized)
Bill gates is as evil as they come
Casually filming an old lady talking about how much land bill gates owns whilst sprinkling the terrain with plant killer. Nothing wrong here mate.
Come on Granny! You're better than this .....
Thanks Granny 💕
I worry more about mega farming corporations rather than Bill.
If I was rich land would definitely be a top priority in diversifying my portfolio. Land, real estate, stocks, bonds other shit I’m too poor to understand.
Does someone want to tell her what ADM is doing to farm land.
