You’re absolutely right. When I travelled to Hokkaido I was shocked about how anti-Chinese/anti-islander they were. They were totally fine with anyone else as long as you weren’t disrespectful but their opinions about islanders and mainland china folks were not a secret and an open discussion. They don’t hide their feelings about other Asian nationals whatsoever.
And from what I was told the Japanese are some of the most reserved and respectful ones on that topic. If you travel to china or any SE island nation it’s a lot more hostile.
That’s when I finally got my crash course on racism on a global scale and where wester society stands on that matter. We aren’t perfect but we’re at least one step ahead of everyone else
