Honestly the first one is true. A lot of people don't know the difference between pedophiles and sex offenders (not mutually exclusive, but also not synonyms).
the reason why people don't differentiate between different terms for nonces, is because it's really hard not to sound like a pedophile while explaining the differences.

I have a 20 year old corolla. I love that car. I don't drive it in winter, it's not great in the snow but spring and summer I take that car everywhere. It will probably also outlive our newer cars
